About the Author

Neil Bernard Dukas was born in Ontario, Canada and joined the Canadian Army as a young man. He served in both Reserve and Active capacities with the Governor General’s Horse Guards, Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment, Mobile Command Headquarters, and the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College.

Former Dean of Instruction at Heald College (Honolulu Campus), Dukas is a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the National Coalition of Independent Scholars. He graduated from Queen’s University (Ontario, Canada) with a bachelor’s degree in political studies and received a Master of Arts degree in Humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

An avid hiker, conservancy advocate and horseman, Dukas continues to research and write on the military history of Hawai‘i with an emphasis on the years prior to annexation.

What a colorful chapter indeed in what is now American military history! Dukas' scholarly apparatus (footnotes and bibliography including newspaper articles and a comprehensive index) makes this fine work much more than a mere guidebook for the tourists.

I've driven along the Pali Highway, a scenic route through the Ko'olau Mountains, and rarely thought about the epic battle that took place there. I've stood on the concrete platform with the wind streaming around me, and seen the beauty of the valley – but not the last stand of desperate warriors. And until now, I never really thought about the battle as a whole, from the military deployment to what it meant for Hawai'i.

That this project succeeds is a testament to Dukas' military imagination, and to his ability to soften what is clearly a deep knowledge of strategy and tactics into bite-sized pieces easily digestible for the general reader. The text, which proceeds apace, is smart and to-the-point without being dry–we get a sense of the context of the battle as well as its content–and the connection to familiar local geography is very helpful.

Other than the nightmare image of warriors falling to their doom, so little is known about the great clash at Nuuanu — as opposed to the thousands of books written about Pearl Harbor — that Dukas' [guide] is most welcome.
