About the Author

Warren Olney (1841-1921) was an American Civil War veteran, attorney, conservationist, and politician. Born in Iowa, Olney was a teacher and superintendent of schools before enlisting with the Union Army in the Civil War. He served at Shiloh, where he was wounded and mistakenly reported killed in action. After the war he earned a law degree and resettled in San Francisco, where he founded a successful law practice and was a founding member of the Sierra Club. He was briefly mayor of Oakland in the early 1900s.
