Overview

The Beach Inn by Joanne DeMaio

From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Breeze comes a novel as sweet as the salt air by the sea.

It was going to be exquisite: a rambling, shingled New England cottage converted into a grand beach inn. Nestled among hydrangeas and swaying dune grasses, this seaside haven would welcome guests on the Connecticut shore. Except the little beach town of Stony Point is no longer feeling like a haven to its residents. Residents including a brooding Jason Barlow, the esteemed architect in charge of the inn's renovation--until a stubborn, grief-induced For Sale sign puts an end to that.

But with a little help from the beach friends, anything is possible. In an effort to save the inn and convince its cherished owner to stay, the friends band together to stage an inn-tervention, shaking up their own lives in the process.

A new season of love, adventure, and heart-healing awaits in the quaint seaside village of Stony Point. So pull up a sand chair and book your stay for a page-turning getaway in The Beach Inn.

Every once in a while an author comes along who weaves stories that simply pulls at the heartstrings and stirs the soul, for me, this author is Joanne DeMaio. In The Beach Inn, author Joanne DeMaio transports the reader back to the tranquil seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut, where the reader catches up with the lives of friends: Maris, Eva, Matt, Jason, Kyle, Lauren, Elsa, Cliff, Nick, and Celia after the sudden death of Elsa's son and Celia's fiance, Salvatore DeLuca. Just like the ebb and flow of the tide, life brings issues and changes to one's life, but the bonds of friendship, sea air, and salt water are cleansing, they cure what ails you. For this group of old friends, the heart-wrenching sudden death of Sal brings a sadness to this tight-knit group of beach friends, especially for Elsa and Jason. Elsa's grief over the loss of her son leads her to decide to put up for sale the old Foley cottage instead of renovating it as a beachside inn. As for Jason, Sal's loss has him going into a downward spiral as he revisits the past when his brother Neil died nine years ago, and he can't seem to shake it. The group decides that an inn-intervention is needed with Operation Make Elsa Smile in order to get her to reconsider selling the cottage. Their efforts to help Elsa and Jason cope with their grief will bring the group together and strengthen their bonds of friendship and personal relationships, as the shimmering denim blue sea with its calming effect will offer them another chance of hope, love, family, friendship, forgiveness, and redemption. So drive under the railroad trestle and enter the enchanting beach town of Stony Point ... pull up a beach chair ... and visit with the close-knit longtime friends in author Joanne DeMaio's delightful novel, The Beach Inn. The Beach Inn is a poignant story of friendship and family, dealing with heartbreak, death, grief, life's experiences and personal issues that will tug at your heartstrings. Author Joanne DeMaio weaves an emotional tale written in the third person narrative, that is set in the present with flashbacks to the past. The reader is transported to the tranquil seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut, where they follow along with Celia, Maris, Eva, Matt, Jason, Kyle, Lauren, Nick, Elsa, and Cliff as they each deal with challenges of real life, loss, love, heartbreak, secrets, and personal demons. Author Joanne DeMaio easily captivates her readers' attention with this beautifully written and emotional tale through a seamless and flowing storyline, and with a wonderful description of a tranquil beach setting that wraps itself around the reader like a sun-warmed beach towel. The characters draw you into their lives with a strong emotional pull, their complexities and flaws are true-to-life, it is easy to relate to them with compassion, empathy, and hope. With a mixture of intrigue, suspense, drama, humor, heartache, hidden secrets, romance, and a strong bond of friendship, this story takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride that will keep you turning the pages until the satisfying conclusion. The Beach Inn is an intricate story of interweaving friendships and facing real-life challenges that are both heart-wrenching and inspirational. It is a powerful and compelling story that will have you feeling the full gamut of emotions while soothing your soul. It is a wonderful story that demonstrates the power of the magical sweet salt air that will cure what ails you.

Dollycas’s Thoughts …grieving comes from love… It’s the love that gives us the strength to go on without somebody. ~The Beach Inn by Joanne DeMaio As soon as I read that line, a line I have learned to live by, I knew I was going to love this story. We arrive at Stony Point to continue our visit. Elsa still grieving the lost of her son has put the Inn up for sale, taking a huge chunk of work out of Jason’s schedule. He is also grieving not for just Sal but his brother Neil as well. He has been able to hear Neil’s voice from heaven and feel him nudging things a certain way in his construction plans. Neil has been oddly quiet since Sal died. All of the characters are dealing with their grief and trying not to make any rash decisions. They all agree that getting Elsa to stay in Stony Point and to have her keep renovating the inn is their #1 priority. Then many other things will fall into place. This story like the one before hits me on all emotional levels but things are getting a little easier for me and they can for Elsa. I am coming up on 28 months since my son’s death and I just take it one day at a time. In fact, I have taken on my own Operation Smile to help me through my loss. I have enjoyed all the books in this series, the journeys we take with these characters are powerful. They share memories, take on new things, and together have such true friendships that keep them afloat when times get tough and when there are joys to share. The last book in this series just crushed my heart but this installment things start to turn around. The realistic ebb and flow of life continues making this another heart warming and heart healing story. I am glad it followed quickly after Beach Breeze. These stories need to be read in order. Load them all up on your Kindles for some wonderful summer reading. I can’t wait for the next one!!

Residents including a brooding Jason Barlow, the esteemed architect in charge of the inn’s renovation–until a stubborn, grief-induced For Sale sign puts an end to that. But with a little help from the beach friends, anything is possible. In an effort to save the inn and convince its cherished owner to stay, the friends band together to stage an inn-tervention, shaking up their own lives in the process. My Thoughts: All the usual characters are enjoying fall in Stony Point, Connecticut, and everyone is trying to help Elsa, who is grieving the loss of her son Sal, encouraging her to keep going with the plans they had made. Lovely plans to turn her cottage and adjacent hang-out into an inn. Previous books have brought stories about that unique hang-out, which has much sentimental value. When I read one of these books, I feel as though I’m there with them. They are so familiar to me, I don’t even need to take notes. Although there are occasional “new” characters, the primary cast is in place, and we rejoin them in their usual struggles…and conflicts. As we reconnect with Jason, Maris, Kyle, Lauren, Celia—and remember those they have lost—as we listen to their stories, remember special moments, and tell them all to entice Elsa that home is here, on Stony Point, we count on the sentimental journey to light the way. One night Maris brings out the home movies and shows them to the gang on the beach. As Elsa sees the 8mm film from thirty-five years ago, when her niece Maris was small, when her sister June was carrying her Happiness Jars, something definitely tugs at her heart. But will it be enough? Will Jason give in to the special invitation to shoot a pilot for a home renovation show? Can he finally find his brother Neil’s voice again? And will his special project for Neil’s beach shack come to fruition? In The Beach Inn, the author brings the reader right into the story and shows how sorrow can turn to joy again with the magic of the shore. 5 stars.

Love this series of great beach reads! The Beach Inn is the perfect book to continue the story that takes place in Stony Point. I was immediately transported back there to visit that close knit group of friends again. This book takes place right where Beach Breeze left off. That's what I like about this set of Joanne's books—they are all just a continuation of each other and I immediately feel comfortable there. Sure, these friends have their ups and downs, who doesn't? But I love watching them as they are there to love and support each other, even when maybe that love and support is not wanted. The friends know exactly what is needed. I was able to escape to Stony Point for a little bit and catch up with everyone's lives, which I just love to do. And story was tied up successfully at the end but Joanne left enough threads open so that there could be other stories from the beach. Yay! I know I'm excited about that and I look forward to going back. Joanne's beach books are great stories, with one leading right into the next one. These would be perfect to binge read this summer, especially if you are on the beach, or even if you just want to escape to the beach, in your imagination.

I know I always say this Joanne, but this one was my favorite so far! It picked up right where the last book ended so it was as though your family has stayed right there for you. You get so involved in all the characters that they feel like family. I do so hope that this series isn't finished because I know not just myself buy many, many others want to see it to continue. Thank you for writing such great stories Joanne!

The Beach Inn By Joanne DeMaio This book starts out where the last one left off. Follows those working/living in Stony Point, CT. Seaside New England village where everything is in place. Lots of surprises in this book. Can't seem to get past the shanty and how Maris is shown it for the first time. It's breathtaking-the romance and atmosphere of a great healing place. Book follows Maris and Jason in their endeavors. Elsa at her house-not quite sure what to do yet-sell or open it as a B&B now that Sal is gone. Twists and turns in this book. Lauren and Kyle-love her driftwood items and he at the diner. Glimpses into the past books so you are not left out in the dark, but not all the details. Memories of those no longer there are spread throughout the book making you wish you had known them better while they were there. Love how Neil's manuscript reflects his friends lives. Especially love all the things that make this come to life. Community sticks together to help each one heal. Received a copy from the author and this is my honest review.
