Overview

The Boss by Abigail Barnette

Sophie Scaife almost ran away once, trading her ticket to college for a ticket to Tokyo. But a delayed flight and a hot one-night stand with a stranger changed her mind, putting her firmly on track to a coveted position at a New York fashion magazine.

When the irresistible stranger from that one incredible night turns out to be her new boss - billionaire and publishing magnate Neil Elwood - Sophie can't resist the chance to rekindle the spark between them... and the opportunity to explore her submissive side with the most Dominant man she's ever known.

Neil is the only man who has ever understood Sophie's need to submit in the bedroom, and the only man who has ever satisfied those desires. When their scorching, no-strings-attached sexual relationship becomes something more, Sophie must choose between her career and heart... or risk losing them both.

Seriously, this book is awesome. It is gorgeously written, the characters are instantly likeable and I never felt the urge to strangle any of them, such a rare quality in present day romance. It effortlessly addresses all of the issues that I had with 50 shades, which are too many to list here. This book shows what a healthy D/s relationship is, and even if that's not your thing, it's still hot! The language used is appropriate for characters of proper emotional maturity to actually be engaging in these activities. It was like my birthday and xmas rolled into one when I found the next book was already up for sale, finding out that numerous books will be following is more than I could have asked for. In case I'm not selling this book hard enough, I have to tell you fellow reader, immediately upon finishing the second book in the series, I started over on book one, this book... Is. That. Good!!! I have a reading list a mile long, I usually follow a very set order of non-fiction, classic, contemporary literature, romance. I'm just unwilling to step out of my Neil and Sophie fantasy world quite yet. All I can say is thank you Jenny Trout/Abigail Barnette for writting a romance novel that doesn't need a dedicated sick bucket, please write quickly!!!

I bought this for one reason and loved it for a completely different reason. While I enjoyed reading through the erotic portions, the story got under my skin. I need to know how the story ends. I want more.

The Boss is the fist book in the series. It's a romance novel that has a hot and steamy S&M theme to it. He's the dominant male boss while she the submissive female personal assistant. Their back story on how they know each other from the past is a little weird, and very unrealistic but I was on board. Neil is twice the age of Sophie, but when it's love and lust, does age really matter? Did I mention he has a sexy English accent? I'll probably check out the other books in the series. This one wasn't half bad. I give it 3/5.

This was well written and had a great story. I hate fifty shade, comparing the two, this beats it.

OK, so I didn't have a very favorable reading experience with the first "BDSM" genre book I picked up, but it was an impulsive book selection and I decided to get some recommendations before diving into the genre again. And not surprisingly, one of my favorite goodreads groups came through with a great BOTM pick. The Boss by Abigail Barnette is a perfect book for anyone wanting to try the genre, at least it was for me. In the other book, I hated how aggressive, degrading, and 24/7 the Dom/sub relationship was portrayed. But in The Boss, the main characters Sophie and Neil used it as "play" during their sexual interactions and they were able to turn it off outside of the bedroom. I loved the characters perspectives of the BDSM lifestyle. It was themed with trust, safety, and communication at all times. “Your trust in me, your ability to surrender totally and give yourself to me freely... That’s the payoff for me, Sophie. It’s an aphrodisiac.” "I stared, transfixed at the image in the mirror. There was the man who so overwhelmed me with his sexual power that I would do anything he asked. His hands and mouth were on me, giving me pleasure because it pleased him, because in that moment I was the center of his world. He wanted me. He wanted to control me, to possess me, to make me surrender to him completely and take all that he had to offer. Yet at the same time he was kneeling before me, worshipping me, as enslaved to me as I was to him." Although Sophie and Neil's sexual relationship is initially a focal point in this book, there are other elements brought into the story that created a well-rounded book that isn't just sex. My only complaints involve the age difference between Sophie and Neil, along with their boss/employee relationship. I should note that these issues also are mentioned several times between the characters and they were not comfortable with them either, but their chemistry and attraction made them helpless apparently. The overall story was pretty predictable in my opinion, but I enjoyed the read anyway. These reasons are why I chose 4 stars instead of 5. The Boss was a great book overall. I was invested in all the characters in this book (there are lots of secondary characters, along with some side stories going on), and I remained engaged in the book until the last page. It does end on a cliffhanger and I immediately purchased the next book The Girlfriend which I will be reading immediately. If you enjoy adult romances with a BDSM element then take a look at this one! My favorite quote: "Call me old fashioned, but I kind of enjoy the so-called 'walk of shame.' It's really more a 'walk of pride because I got some.'" The Boss series includes the following installments (as of August 2014): #1-The Boss #2-The Girlfriend #2.5-The Hook-Up #3-The Bride #4-The Ex #5-Untitled (not yet released)

My first book by this author and I just couldn't put the book down and this doesn't happen very often. The characters were all so real and great. Sophie was so down-to-earth. Despite her age, she knew what she wanted for herself and her life. Her quirky roommate Holli just made the story even more enjoyable.  I really enjoyed the interactions they had with each other and the sincere friendship. Needless to say, there's Neil… the sort of man whom I'll wanna meet too. I love him for his maturity, his openness, his sensitivity, even his alpha-ness. I had no issues with the age gap. In fact, I don't see it an issue personally. The chemistry between Neil and Sophie was just hot! Plus they had a history together, it made the story hotter when they met again. Neil treats Sophie with so much care and respect and puts her and her feelings into consideration with everything that they do together, makes me love him even more. The sex scenes they had were beyond my wildest dreams. I'm not exposed to the world of BDSM and I've not read much books that were so explicit but I didn't feel turn off one bit. I have to commend the author for writing it so well. Neil was just so considerate with his actions and with Sophie, I just got caught up with the action, steam and heat. Both of them were not shy with their sexuality and their sense of adventure. They make an awesome pair. This book turned out to be a really awesome surprise with humor, emotions, romance and steamy scenes. Definitely not gonna end it just yet without checking the rest of the books in this series.
