When I got the book from Bookbub, I was not sure about this book, but I was really surprised how great it was. It didn't leave anything unsaid. I hate it when after reading a book, I am left with questions and unfinished business or emotions, but this book was an amazing journey from beast to human with the power of love and forgiveness. I am looking forward to reading more books from this author. My only complaint is that I wish it had an epilog so we could find out about their baby, but you can't have it all. If you love an emotionally charged, great book, read this one. It truly was good. I know I will reread it again and again.

Beautiful Story, Beautifully Written... While there are many books out with basically the same story line I have not read any with the emotional kick of this one... Yes, Richard used and abused Katy, his PA at work, for his own gain but her goodness and ability to love got him... Could not put this book down and while I wanted to hate Richard I couldn't because he like many of us was a product of his upbringing... After only a few pages I felt as if I were part of the story and that happens rarely... Recommend this book highly...

Ever so often there comes a book so perfectly written that it lingers with you long after you’ve finished reading it. The Contract was indeed one of those books. I laughed, cried, yelled, cheered, and wanted to throw my Nook across the room because of this story. The characters are beautifully crafted, full of depth and flaws that made them feel as though they were right there in the room with me. I ached for Katy and want to slap the crap out of Richard, yet I was compelled to like him. I wanted him to change and enjoyed watching his transformation as the story progressed. The story ebbed and flowed with such perfect precision that it was impossible for me to put it down. I didn’t want it to end, and when it did, I walked away satisfied with its ending. There is a realism to Melanie’s work that captures the emotions of life. She is a master of prose and brings poetry to her characters. This is a book I highly recommend reading. It will tug at your heartstrings and leave you wanting more.

This book was different than I thought it would be. Based on the synopsis I figured another Alpha male who learns to love but this book was so much more. It was so moving and emotional. Richard was such an arse in the beginning. He hated Katharine because he thought she was weak and a push over. He had no idea who the real Katharine was. He had a horrible childhood and basically didn't know any other way to be. Katharine also had her fair share of troubles during her childhood but instead of turning out like Richard she was always giving. She bit her tongue at work because she needed the job not because she was a push over or weak. Richard needs Katharine to get a new job he wants. He had no idea when he asked for her help that his whole life would change. He wasn't ready for it to change in the way it did and found that as the changes were happening he didn't feel the way he expected to feel. Katharine takes the job because she could do so much with the money he is offering and because she sees something in Richard; a different Richard probably the real Richard. Will she be able to help him find the real Richard or will he stick to how now. Will he continue to fight against the change? I found this book to be so emotional; I teared up a few times and I don't cry. Everyone likes Katharine; she is kind, loving, and always looking to help whoever needs it. All the characters in this book are wonderful. They all help Richard see how different things could be. I would love to read more about all the characters in this book. I have read one other book by Melanie Moreland and loved them both so much. I look forward to reading her other books. I was given this book in return for an honest review.

Richard VanRyan is a relentless business man and a playboy. But he works hard for his boss. After being passed over for a promotion he decides to leave the company and his boss in the lurch. He wants to work for a competitor. But to do so, he has to be seen as a family oriented man, not the womanizer he really is. To do so, he has only one option. He has to ask for help from someone he despises. Katharine Elliott is Richard's PA. She’s a hard worker and very likeable… or so everyone else seems to think. Richard can’t see it himself. She’s too quiet, too plain… too thin. Katy doesn’t know how Richard feels but she can sense it. She shares his utter dislike, knowing him to be arrogant and mean; and a complete d***. She only puts up with him and does whatever he demands because she desperately needs her pay cheque. When Richard asks Katy for help, she gets angry thinking he’s making a fool of her, but he convinces her he’s not. He wants her to pretend to be his fiance as it’s the only way he’ll have a chance getting his new position and getting one over on his old boss. After a lot of thought and with no other options, Katy agrees to help Richard. This was a fast read. Richard was certainly a man worth hating as he only thought of himself, not how the pretence would affect anyone else, least of all Katy. But katy is stronger than he gives her credit for, and she won’t take his sh** now that she’s no longer his P.A. I laughed and cried with the characters, I wanted to slap Richard and shake Katy more than once but when the ending came, I cried again because I wasn’t done reading about them. I can’t recommend this book enough. And now it has a companion novella. Grab your copies today and immerse yourself in all things Richard and Katy.

5 - "Go ~~~~ yourself, VanRyan." Stars! The Contract is not the first book I have read by Melanie Moreland, but it is definitely the best book I have read by her to date. There is nothing I love more than a dislikeable Hero who over the course of the story reforms into something else. Richard VanRyan is the epitomy of that description, because at the beginning of this story, he can only be described as a total tool, but what I liked is that the author through using his POV for the bulk of the story really gave you an insight into his head, how he was thinking, and how those assumptions he initially made about Kate unravelled and the effect that has on him, the more he gets to know her. She was perfection. I couldn’t ducking stand her. There is a chance when an author tells a story such as this that the heroine ends up being a bit of a doormat in part because of the situation she has found herself in, not so with Katharine Elliott, she may have understood that Mr VanRyan’s actions ultimately put her in an untenable position, but she in no way took things lying down. Her POV is included at pertinent points in the story, and getting in her head when certain things are playing out really gave depth to them both as characters. I loved the back and forth between these two, as the level of their deception to everyone else grows, the actual connection between them forges stronger. You can also see that Richard starts to realize as things move along, that what he thought would be a small white lie to get him into a new job, and a couple of months inconvenience with having Miss Elliott in his life, gradually grows in proportion as he settles into the new job and his relationship with Katy morphs into more than just a business transaction. "I’m trying to be better." Loved this story, loved them as individuals, and as a couple, the backgrounds that the author gave them both gave gravitas to how they are characterized at the beginning of the book, and as the story develops you see how both of them change as people and towards each other as they learn more about themselves and the other, because of the situation they are in. I got lost in this story, literally not moving off the sofa until the last paragraph. "I’m not scared of loving you anymore… I’m only scared of losing you." I am a little late to the party with reading it obviously, but if like me you have dragged your heels, take my advice and make this the next book you pick up to read, I don’t think you’ll come away disappointed at its end. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Not being an aficionado of romance, I decided to go with a recommendation from a fellow reader that The Contract was a good read. Since I was taking a short train trip and only wanted something light and quick to read, didn’t expect much from this book. From the synopsis, I was fully prepared to dislike the male protagonist, Richard; he appeared to be the typical self-absorbed rich player who treated his personal assistant and female lead, Katy, with disdain and contempt. I was wary that the heroine, Katy, would let this cave man walk all over her and take his abusive because she was desparate to keep her well-paying job. What a pleasant surprise to have been proven so wrong about a book. Melanie Moreland is a very strong writer, in “The Contract” she has created a powerful and fascinating story with characters who are more complex than at first glance. It was fascinating to read as these two people come together, bound by a professional “contract” founded on Richard’s plan for revenge and Katy’s devotion to care for an ailing loved one, then gradually grow towards a relationship based on genuine loved and respect. I was especially pleased to see Katy come into her own to show her true strength to an overbearing Richard once they set their contractual agreement in motion. To the reader’s, and Richard’s surprise, Katy prov3ed that she was no pushover or doormat. She dictated the terms of how she expected to be treated and held Richard accountable when his behavior got out of line. In Katy’s no-nonsense presence, Richard grew into a more accountable, mature man who came recognized and respect Katy for the wonderful woman that she was. I loved this couple, their story was so well-written and I look forward to reading more by this author.

I read and also did the audiobook at the same time and I absolutely loved every minute of it. The narrators did an amazing job and the author wrote a perfect story, the kind I love to read and I enjoyed everything about it. The characters and their stories a perfect compliment to the settings and plot line. Would certainly be reading or listening for any story written by Melanie Moreland.
