It was the usual two-hour drive to Michigan, and Chase wasn't as thrilled as he usually was to go to the lake that weekend.
Chase was a boy whose grandparents live on a lake. During the summer, he and his family visited his grandma and grandpa almost every weekend. This weekend, though, Chase really wanted to stay home with his friends. His buddies had invited him to play football and hang out, but he had lost the argument with his mom and dad.
One of Chase's favorite things to do at the lake is hunt for turtles. He also likes to catch fishes and frogs, but mostly, he loves catching turtles.
He has caught many turtles for a little boy. Some were big, and some were small. Every time Chase caught a turtle, he always put it back in the lake. He figured the turtle would want to be with his family.
Chase was feeling sullen. He stood at the end of the pier, looking out at the water. There were no waves, and the lake looked like a mirror. He could see the reflections of the clouds and the trees in the water.
Chase bent over to see his mirror image. He could see his eyes, his nose, and his ears sticking out very clearly. He smiled and waved at himself.
Under his reflection, Chase saw something move. At first, he couldn't tell what it was and knew he had seen almost every kind of animal in the lake. He kept staring down into the clear, calm water, hoping to see better what it was.
It definitely isn't a fish or a snake or a turtle, he thought. No, this was much bigger than any of those. But what could it be?
This creature was round like a steering wheel of a car, maybe even bigger. It had squares of brown, gray, and green on top. Chase's chest pounded with fear and excitement as the animal rose to the surface.
Just then, a large, pointed black head popped out of the water. And it was then that Chase realized what it was—
the most humongous turtle he had ever seen!
The turtle's feet were huge. They reminded Chase of the size of his dad's hands. The top of its shell looked like a large checkerboard, and its tail was long and thick and came to a tiny point.
Chase couldn't believe his eyes. As he stood there in awe, the turtle slowly turned his head, looked at him, and seeped into the water. Thrilled with his discovery, Chase's whole body vibrated.
