Overview

From the 11th century to the end of the 13th, says Roach (history, U. of Glasgow), an underdeveloped Europe presented a poor selection of material goods, and so people developed and practiced their skills as shoppers on the variety of religious forms that were on offer. He shows how consumers drew on their own resources to find new sources and bypass old ones, resulting in the gaudy religious market of the 14th century with its variety of religious orders, painted churches, and flagellants.
