Dr. Tessa McGowan is a forensic pathologist. She can hardly believe what she is looking at. A young woman, completely hairless, and her face totally tattooed to make her look like a doll. Once he's done and he kills them, what he does is unspeakable until he leaves the bodies where they may be found. Unfortunately, Tessa knows this victim .. they were in college together and another of her friends has gone missing. Agent Dakota Sharp is investigating. His sister died 12 years ago of a drug overdose. He has never accepted the cause of death ... he has always felt there was something more. It has nearly cost him his marriage ... to Tessa McGowan. He's not the easiest man in the world to live with, but Tessa wants to try again. Dakota is just not sure .. he let her go once, he's not sure he could do it again. And even if they can't make the marriage work, he will certainly do everything in his power o protect her. More bodies are falling .. and it looks like the Dollmaker has his eyes set on Tessa to become his next playmate. I've read the books in this series out of order ... but no problem. Each one is a stand alone. With this author, I have no worries grabbing any new book of hers to come out. I always know it's going to be well-written, highly suspenseful and a balance between the crime and the romance. The characters are memorable and fully developed. This has been a terrific series for anyone who likes Romantic Suspense. 5 Stars for the book --- 5 Stars for the series.

The Dollmaker is the second book in Mary Burton’s The Forgotten Files series. There are a few people that spill over from the first book, The Shirk, but this is still a stand alone read. By comparison, I feel like this is even better than the first book. Mrs. Burton definitely knows how to craft a wicked romantic suspense. Be sure not to read this book if you are prone to nightmares and have an aversion to dolls. The Dollmaker focuses on Virginia State Police Agent Dakota Sharp and his investigation into the murder of a promising young high school student and a woman who looks like she has been turned into a living doll. As the investigation intensifies, Dakota must also deal with demons from his own past regarding not only his dead sister but also his estranged wife. Since this is a romantic suspense, I will have to leave it at that regarding the details. I will say that everything is relative when it comes to this book. The fact that this all happens in a small town makes things that much more complicated. I really loved The Dollmaker. It flowed nicely and there was never a dull moment. I couldn’t help but hope for the best when it came to Dakota and his personal life. He is a great detective and a tortured soul. I appreciated the fact that his estranged wife had not given up on their marriage and was trying to reconcile while at the same time also trying to understand what it meant to be a homicide detective. I look forward to the next book in the series. **Received a copy from Montlake Romance and reviewed the book voluntarily.**

A gripping, riveting and captivating murder mystery with a perfect balance of intriguing suspense of several murders and enthralling romance between a husband and wife fighting for a new chance, a new start for their life together. As the crimson details of the two separate murders start to unveil, Dakota Sharp tries to stay focused on the job at hand, instead of dealing with the death of his step-father he was never close to or with his estranged wife who suddenly comes back to town. I liked how the mystery around the murders was built, how the details came to light, how suddenly the pieces of the puzzle started to fit together in a way no one expected. The identity of the culprit stays well hidden, the motives even better. The hunt for the answers is intense and fevered, as more victims keep showing up, as the evidence shows he is not finished, his deadly, and he might be close to them. Tessa and Dakota has a lot of unfinished business between them as well as resentment, even trust is lacking. Yet the palpable feelings they have for each other can't be denied. But can they look over the past hurt, can they make it work, can they accept each other as they are, can their careers co-exist in one relationship? So many questions, so much passion, such a deep emotions, but will they live long enough to find out the answers? I am in awe with the story, the flow, the vigor, the tension, the spacing of the tale all masterfully crafted to hold the reader's mind and built the pressure and concern through the tale while being enthralled by the desire and adoration of the burning romance, a rekindled love between a husband and wife. A perfectly balanced romantic suspense story ~ Five Spoons

4.5 stars! This is not playing house! Book 2 in Mary Burton's Forgotten Files Series, intense reading from page one! Virginia State Police Agent Dakota Sharp is torn by emotions and memories that haunt him at every turn as he is now faced with the loss of the last of his family. Although not particularly close to his stepfather, standing grave side, guilt is also dredged to the surface when the long-retired chief of police presents Dakota with a possible lifeline to the ultimate cold case a dozen years passed; but is he too close to the case to be able to see clearly. A promising young high school football star with a scholarship on the horizon is brutally murdered, no clues as to why. While trying to bring the family answers, Sharp is called to investigate a grisly discovery in a park playground, the victim although beyond recognition may soon prove a link in Dakota's never ending chase for the truth. The term "playing with dolls" now takes on a new meaning as only someone with a very disturbed sense of play is within their midst. The clock is ticking as evidence points to a twisted agenda that targets the one person Sharp will fight to the death to protect, but will history repeat itself and Dakota find he is once again too late?

Wow. Intense. I love a good plot, suspense, mystery and some romance. Fast paced, creepy. I would recommend this book to anyone. The romance was dabbed throughout just enough to help the stomach muscles unclench from the intensity. Rest assured this can be read as a stand alone.

If you like a really good suspense novel Mary Burton is one of my go-to authors and believe me she did not disappoint this time either. Tessa is a forensic pathologist who is married to Agent Dakota Sharp of the Virginia State Police and who has just come back to get her marriage back on track. Tessa and Dakota have someone else in common and that is that Dakota’s sister, Kara, who was Tessa’s best friend back in college. The sad part is that Kara was found dead after a Halloween party that Tessa, Kara and two other friends of theirs were at. It was ruled a drug overdose but there were some that would not believe that Kara would do this to herself. Agent Sharp has been on a mission ever since to find out what really happened to his sister. This also played a big part in Tessa and Dakota’s troubled marriage. Shortly after Tessa gets back to town her friends turn up dead and looking like someone has been turning them in to real life dolls. Now with everyone gone from their group but Tessa, Agent Sharp turns up the heat in figuring this mystery out hoping to find peace over his sister’s death and keeping Tessa safe. Ms. Burton keeps you drawn to this story with great suspense. I loved the characters in this book and couldn’t put it down just trying to figure out how everything came together. There were times I had to re-read parts just because it took me by total surprise with all of the twists in this book. Another great suspense read by one of my favorite authors. This was an ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review.

What a powerful and freaky suspense novel! The main characters, Tessa McGowan, a forensic pathologist and her husband, Agent Sharp Donovan, who works for the Virginia State Police, are both back in Richmond after Tessa had left when their marriage suffered. Instead of coming back to file for divorce, Tessa wants him back. She starts employment with the medical examiner’s office. Due to their professions, they end up working closely with others to solve a gruesome death where a woman's face was tattooed to resemble a living doll. She will not be the only victim. Due to Sharp's tragic loss of his half-sister Kara 12 years ago from an overdose, he has not been the same. She was also a friend of Tessa’s. When former agent Knox asks Sharp to take Kara’s file from him, the case is reactivated. This file is never to be forgotten. This book was hard to put down, but I did need to take breaks and have real life intervene to get me out of the book trance I was in. To me, it was written in a way that moved smoothly with some real-life periods that allowed me time to breathe. I never thought that this type of crime existed. It was eye opening, literally and figuratively, and I look forward to reading The Shark, Book One of this Forgotten Files novels. The good guys as cops, agents, detectives, medical examiners, and tech security geniuses form a well-oiled machine in doing everything they can to catch criminals. Bravo to a brilliant, well-researched and exciting book. [I received this book free of charge for my own individual use by Amazon Content Services and Montlake, and my review and opinion are my own.]

Eerily bone-chilling story! With her latest book in The Forgotten Files series, Mary Burton takes us on a riveting delve into a psychopath's mind as investigators try to put the puzzle pieces together in time to stop him from killing again! A dozen years ago, Dakota Sharp suffered a personal tragedy that scarred him enough to put him on the path to law enforcement in order to help others. He is a major workaholic, and when a case hits too close to his own past, he especially becomes obsessed with solving it, even to the detriment of his marriage. Now his estranged wife is back ... looking for a second chance. Forensic pathologist Tessa McGowan tried walking away from the loneliness of her marriage to Dakota, but she found she missed him even more when she wasn't with him. Now she's working side by side with him on his most recent case that has a maniac putting a beautiful woman on her exam table that he carved into his very own living doll! When they figure out too many connections to be able to ignore that this is hitting close to home, and Tessa becomes next on the killers wishlist, will Dakota be able to figure out who is behind it in time to save her?
