Mayfield Country Estate of the Duke of Camberly - 1813 Matthew (Matt) Addison, the Duke of Camberly, is to marry Miss Willa Raverly the next day because she is an heiress and he needs money. Having recently inherited his title, he realizes he knows nothing about running the estate. In addition, the money in the estate has simply disappeared and Matt wants to know where it went. Confronting his grandmother with that question, she confesses that a man named Hardesty had been blackmailing his now deceased grandfather because he claims to knows a secret about William, the Marquis of Tilbury, who died six months ago. Thus, the title has come to Matt. Matt’s own parents died when he was a young child. He has two sisters of whom his grandmother does not approve because their mother had been an actress. And now, Matt has just received a note from Willa calling off their wedding. London Willa and her two friends, Cassandra and Leonie, have been dubbed the Spinster Heiresses. Their fathers are all powerful and wealthy men who demand the best and titled men for their daughters. Cassandra and Leonie are both now happily married. Since Willa and Matt’s betrothal several months ago, Willa has not seen Matt and is tired of being ignored. She knows he can be a romantic man because when he was in university, he penned a book of poems called “Love Fulfilled.” Thus, she has called off the wedding in frustration at his lack of attention to her. When Matt rides to London later that day, Willa is surprised to see him. He then tries to explain to her why he has been so busy at his estate and hopes to woo her back. Can he do it and if so, can theirs be a happy marriage? I enjoyed this book and the relationship that Matt and Willa made with their honesty to each other. There is love, a mystery, and some violence but it all worked well together. Copy provided by Edelweiss in exchange for a fair and honest review.
