Overview

In 1977, the year I turned 30, three life-changing things happened. I got married. I got a kitty. And I painted my first picture. All of it went into the diaries I've been keeping since I was in my 20s, because, most of the time, my life has felt like a miracle and I didn't want to forget any of it. And that's what THE FAIRY TALE GIRL is about. It's an illustrated memoir, watercolored and hand-lettered, taken from my diaries and photo albums; a story of growing up in the lovely 1950s as the oldest of eight children, coming of age in the 1960s and 1970s and discovering art, cooking, feminism, rock and roll, and love. When my heart was broken into a thousand pieces, and the grief was so terrible I was inspired to run away from home (in the naive hope of escaping the pain), I never gave up believing in and searching for my childhood dreams of happily ever after. If you like time travel, you've come to the right place. With Love, Susan Branch

About the Author

Susan Branch is the American author of the thirteen HEART OF THE HOME lifestyle books (with her new two-book memoir, there will be fifteen). There are over four million books in print, all of them homemade, hand-written, and watercolored ~ books about the home arts of cooking, gardening, homemaking, family, best friends, entertaining and the little things that make life sweet. Susan has also been designing best-selling calendars since 1993 and has licensed her art and design to many other things, from dishes to fabric to hooked rugs.

Born and raised in Southern California, Susan followed her heart to the island of Martha's Vineyard in her 30s, "unable to live any longer without four seasons and picket fences as everyday architecture." She shares her 1849 Captain's home with her two kitties, Jack and Girl, and Joe Hall, "the man of her dreams." She writes a newsletter called "WILLARD," named for her grandfather, that goes to 53,000 subscribers monthly and is is available through her blog at www.susanbranch.com.

This is part one of Branch's memoir of growing up in the 1950s and 1960s and also her disappointing first marriage. Her broken heart really resonates with me and I very much look forward to part two ("the best is yet to come"). If you enjoy memoirs, you will will especially enjoy this colorful and engrossing book.

I read it all in one sitting!!! And then again to enjoy all the wonderful art. Susan has done it again. Her first book in this series, A Fine Romance: Falling in Love With the English Countryside, was absolutely enchanting and now lightning has struck twice with this prequel. Filled with details of her early life and written in her own voice, this book keeps you wanting more until the very last page. (It's a three part series, so we will have even more to want in 2016 with her Martha's Vineyard Isle of Dreams.) Filled with lots of her beautiful watercolors, personal photos and quotes like her other magical books, this book is pure Susan whimsy. You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll remember your own coming of age. An absolutely gorgeous book that is sure to inspire. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed!!!
