Edward Spencer Mott (1844-1910) was educated at Eton and Sandhurst and in 1862 joined the 19th Foot, serving on the frontiers of India and Burma. He returned to England in 1867, giving up the Army, and for a while slept rough on the streets of London before becoming a strolling actor. In 1877 he joined the staff of the Sporting Times and found fame as a racing tipster under the pseudonym Nathaniel Gubbins. He also wrote a number of books on racing and several memoirs.
