The Forbidden by Jodi Ellen Malpas

What do you do when you can't control your feelings for someone? When you know you shouldn't go there? Not even in your head.

Annie has never experienced the 'spark' with a guy-the kind of instant chemistry that steals your breath and blindsides you completely. Until a night out with friends brings her face to face with the wickedly sexy and mysterious Jack. It's not just a spark that ignites between them. It's an explosion. Jack promises to consume Annie, and he fully delivers on that promise.

Overwhelmed by the intensity of their one night together, Annie slips out of their hotel room. She is certain that a man who's had such a powerful impact on her and who could bend her to his will so easily, must be dangerous. But she's already in too deep. And Jack isn't only dangerous. He is forbidden.

Be prepared this book is unlike anything Jodi Ellen Malpas has written and also note that the title is totally in sync with the plot of the book. This book is raw, emotional, shocking, tragic and above all else confronting. It will not be to everyone's taste and honestly I wasn't certain I could read it, let alone finish The Forbidden. However such is the skill and brilliant writing by Ms. Malpas that I persevered. What a roller coaster of emotions this book brought to the surface.

This goes against everything we're taught. Hope it turns women away from engaging in affairs with married men. However,I empathize with Annie.

The Forbidden is a very different side to Jodi Ellen Malpas's writing, it's raw, it's dark, it's heart wrenching , its witty and as the title says it's Forbidden, that being said it captivated me, it drew me in, a taboo subject with plenty of angst but I couldnt put it down and I read it in one sitting. This is a standalone featuring Jack Joseph and Annie Ryan a couple who meet in a bar, one thing leads to another and they end up having the best night of their lives, never to meet again or will they, fate sometimes works in mysterious ways..... I fell for Jack big time (I didn't want to, I wanted to hate him) but he sucked me in just like he sucked Annie in and although I struggled at times with the story I needed to know how fate worked out for them. Every character in this book is strong and has depth, the supporting characters are loyal and witty whilst staying true to their own beliefs. This book is a beautifully written story that will have you on a emotional roller coaster, i felt every emotion possible in those few hours and in the end I have to say this is quite possible the best we have seen from Jodi Ellen Malpas and I don't say that lightly I'm a huge Jesse fan. What's next for this very talented writer who knows, she seems to be going from strength to strength and is not afraid to cover subjects others skim over. I loved it, great job Jodi.

writing about the forbidden is tricky because there is one plot point that shouldn't be spoiled that informs the whole book. it's one that is controversial enough that i know certain people draw a line at reading books that deal with this. i actually find it interesting, i actually appreciate the drama and angst stories like this stir up. but i do realize that it's not to everyone's taste. at its heart, the forbidden is a story about love. about how hard it is to find. how it doesn't always find the perfect moment to find us. and how hard it is to walk away from a love that you feel to the depths of your soul. even when circumstances and everyone you trust tells you that you can't be together. and what if what is forbidden feels so right. so undeniable that the only way forward is to give in? and what if instead of being terrible it's every dream come true? except the foundation is quicksand and it will fall away. and what then? that's where annie and jack find themselves. building a relationship on quicksand. but an architect and a contractor can probably figure out a way to build something that lasts. even if it seems impossible. **the forbidden will publish on august 8, 2017. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/grand central publishing (forever) in exchange for my honest review

4.5 stars--THE FORBIDDEN by Jodi Ellen Malpas is a stand alone, contemporary adult romance story line focusing on contractor Jack Joseph, and twenty nine year old architect Annie Ryan. NOTE: The author’s use of British euphemisms and slang may be foreign to North American readers. The subject matter controversial, and may not be suitable for more sensitive readers. Told from first person point of view (Annie Ryan) THE FORBIDDEN is a story of the taboo; the forbidden romance between Jack Joseph, and the woman with whom he will fall in love, Annie Ryan. A chance meeting with the sexy Jack Joseph, at a local bar finds Annie stepping out of her comfort zone leading to a one-night stand that neither Annie nor Jack will ever forget. What ensues is the forbidden relationship between Annie and Jack, as they struggle to keep secret their growing love from family, friends and the people at work. THE FORBIDDEN follows the building relationship between two people whose attraction to one another is off the charts; the palpable sexual energy is strong; the passion and fiery entanglements forbidden, buried beneath months of secrets and lies. When discovered, their controversial romance brings tragedy, heartbreak and grief to everyone involved. No one is safe when a woman scorned seeks retribution for sins of betrayal and lies. THE FORBIDDEN is a roller coaster of emotions. The back and forth, up and down of a relationship that is stalled by fear, promises to another, and commitment to someone else. The angst is tangible; the suspense riveting; the nature of the forbidden controversial and taboo. Jodi Ellen Malpas breaches the line from which there is no return; the prohibited crossing over in the land between black and white where matters of the heart are colorful, complicated and circumstantial. The premise is dramatic and intense; the characters are passionate, vibrant and alive; the romance is powerful, rebellious and strong. Their happily ever after comes at a cost.

This book took me from the highest highs to the lowest lows. It makes you wonder, if two people who shouldn't be together are really meant for each other. How can your soul mate be with someone else? This book really makes you thinks; you can never say what you wouldn't do in certain situations. In the end, this was a great read and I enjoyed every page.

This review was written by Marie for a guest review post on Ever After Book Reviews blog: 4.5 Stars Wow. This book was nothing like I thought it’d be. It was gut-wrenchingly angsty, with an intense rollercoaster ride through the gamut of emotions – betrayal, anger, passion, sympathy, and of course, love. At first, I took issue with the premise of this book. I was outraged at the fact that a man could ever step out on his wife, especially for a woman he barely knows. But as the story unfolded and his situation became known, I softened toward Jack, and hoped that what he was building with Annie would boil to fruition. It was difficult for me to put this book down, honestly. At first, I was angry. I considered throwing the book across the room (truthfully). Betrayal is not something I am a huge fan of in my romance readings, but my anger quickly turned in to curiosity, and then hope. Hope that these two incredibly charismatic characters would eventually find their happily ever after. As the book went on, there was a sickening desperation to Jack’s situation, and a heart-breaking angst to Annie’s. It was, at times, difficult to read, but I had to. I had to believe that they would figure it all out. The truth in this story is that love truly can hit you at the most inopportune time, and sometimes it isn’t an easy road to happiness. I have always been a firm believer that love shouldn’t be something you hide from the world, nor is it something that should ever hurt someone else. But, as Annie and Jack have proven, sometimes, that isn’t always true. This was a brilliantly written story that is truly eye-opening for people like myself who have never been in that situation or who have always thought that there was only one formula for a great love story. Thank you for broadening my horizons and for making me believe that even in the most unfortunate of situations, love truly can exist. ***I voluntarily read a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own***

Five star to this book full of love action and and forbidden places. Sometimes when you venture out into the forbidden you end up on the right side after all. Happy for Jack he found true love in his brokeness, and Annie found true love when she was not looking for it neither did she want it

3.5 stars! The Forbidden by Jodi Ellen Malpas reeled me in with the forbidden/taboo aspect. I just had to know what it was and what was going to happen. This story definitely delivers an intense read, although this story may have a deal breaker for some. Annie’s on a night on the town when she meets someone. The chemistry between them ignites, but what happens when the man you want is forbidden? I really liked Annie. She’s a hardworking, successful architect and she recently buys a house. The world’s kind of her oyster and she has no room for a man. And isn’t it just like life to find one when you least expect it? There were a lot of laughs, and enough steam to keep me reading. When I found out the forbidden aspect, I will say that I hesitated to continue. The author has a good acknowledgement page before the story begins, however, and I really recommend reading it. I kept it in the back of my mind as I read, and it really helped me continue. By that point, I felt the story line did become a bit predictable. The pacing slowed as a result, but there’s another twist that definitely caught me by surprise. This is my first book by this author, and it was definitely well-written with fun and intriguing characters.

Oh MY GOD. JEM is one of those authors that I don’t even bother reading the synopsis for her books, I just dive right in. This book was no exception..though when I got into and discovered what made it “Forbidden” I thought about DNFing the book. But this is JEM and she hasn’t let me down before so I kept at it. She did not disappoint. After awhile I got over the forbidden aspect of the story and was cheering on Jake and Annie! The chemistry between the two of them was off the charts.. even during the parts when Annie was trying to be the better person and walk away.. the chemistry was still jumping off the page. I LOVED JACK and my heart was breaking for him throughout the book, his situation was crazy (seriously) and I understand now why he couldn’t just be done with it… The last 15% of the book kept me on the edge of my seat and got the best of my emotions. After having a moment of where I considered DNFing I kept at reading it and I am glad that I continued reading. I ended getting past the one thing I had a problem with in this story and really started to enjoy it and the characters in the book. I am wondering if we’ll see more of them in the future. Are we going to see more from Annie and Jack? Maybe we’ll get a story for Micky, Nat and Lizzy? I would love to see how Annie and Jack’s happily ever after pans out, because this book didn’t have an epilogue and I think all books need an epilogue at the END of the story.. so maybe there will be more. I guess we’ll see!
