Overview

A curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable. After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl's murder.

Another story of a flawed hero. The book reads relatively well and gets you involved in the characters (fairly well developed). The resolution of the story happens quickly at the end. A few too many typos/errors in the conversion of this book to an eBook. In the teaser for the next story in the series, a man was referenced as wearing a "rolodex" on his wrist. Quite funny, really.

Just couldn't get into the story; I stopped reading after 100 pages so perhaps I didn't give it a chance. Maybe I will give a try at another time.

This author first came to my notice when I read the 1st book from his "Myron Vale" series. It was on the B & N "free" list. I was so taken with the high quality of the writing, I decided to check out some of his other works. In it's own way, this book is just as good. I didn't get drawn in to the story quite as fast, but, once I did, I was hooked. The characters are complete and interesting, the mystery was solid, and the pacing was consistent. Also, the author obviously knows the Oregon coast very well. I've not yet been fortunate enough to travel there, but his words paint a clear picture of it's beauty.

Loved the main character, smart alect but likeable. I couldn't help but root for him. The author did a great job of creating an interesting cast of characters. I really loved this book.

Long on emotional angst, short on plot and substance. A big disappointment for this lover of crime fiction. As I choose my books by author, I doubt I will be coming back to this author.

Just finished this book, and although not a big mystery fan, i must admit to being thrilled to find an admirable new author to read. The plot is well crafted, well paced, and overall well done. The characters are real and developed as much as possible without either slowing the story or writing a much longer book. I look forward to reading the rest of the series very soon.
