I LOVED Johanna and Connor's story!! Johanna was a strong heroine just trying to save the only thing left of her sister, her niece. Connor was trying to duty his duty for his country, but his heart kept getting in the way! A strong start to a new series and I can't wait to see what Kingston has in store for us!

Johanna Templeton came from England to America to look after her sick sister and niece Laurel. Johanna’s sister passes away and Johanna stays to take care of Laurel while her brother in law continued to disappear from business trips. When he decided to take Laurel to Scotland Johanna didn’t know anything was wrong until her brother in law was killed and Laurel kidnapped. Johanna had received a ransom letter for Laurel Johanna has to take a certain book to the kidnappers. When Johanna brings the book to the kidnappers they don’t have Laurel. The ransom was actually about finding the map to the demon’s heart- a rare ruby linked to the MacMasters family.Johanna is rescued by a Highlander Connor and he is determined to protect Johanna. Johanna and Connor are attracted to each other but armed assassins are determined to get Johanna to their boss Connor does not stay in one place long because of being a spy. That leaves little if any time for a relationship.. Connor is on a mission as a spy for Queen Victoria. When meeting Connor tries to keep her troubles to herself. . I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the intrigue and suspense. This is fast paced. The plot was good and I definitely enjoyed reading this. But I did feel this book was a little long and could have been shorter. I did find it hard to put down as I wanted to know what what was going to happen next. But I thought Johanna was overly distrustful of Connor when he had rescued her and felt maybe she had an issue with trusting men or maybe just trusting. This story had a lot in it: adventure, suspense, mystery, romance, a demon’s heart jem, action, murder, thieves, kidnappers, artifacts, passion, betrayal, greed, and so much more. I really liked the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.

Did I ever enjoy this Highland romance! Johanna, an American author of adventurous romances, sets out for Scotland to rescue her niece after her abduction by an unscrupulous character. The unscrupulous character believes that Johanna is in possession of a priceless artifact that gives the holder immense powers. While in Scotland, Johanna is set upon by brigands at the behest of the unscrupulous character but is herself rescued by our handsome hero, Connor. During the madcap evasions from the bad guys and the pursuit of the whereabouts of the artifact themselves, Connor and Johanna fall in love…and thus the bad guys are foiled and a happy ever after is achieved by the good guys..A lovely story!

Author Tara Kingston puts together a well written feisty female heroine and a rough well meaning hero that makes this book work in a spectacular manner. The MacMasters family is introduced in this first book to the series and as a reader I could see an huge opening created for their stories in future books. Each character had fully developed personalities that will hold the readers attention. This book includes a little mysticism to the plot that enriches the story rather than taking away from it and it makes me wonder if the other books to this series will have the same theme. I do love a book with intrigue and danger combined with love and this book does it to perfection. The plot is rich with descriptions of the tension between siblings as well as the sexual and personal tension between Connor and Johanna. The numerous villains are well thought out and keep this book from being just another romance. Johanna was determined to save her niece at any cost and throughout the book her strength while being afraid was continually highlighted. I did find that there was a point that I wanted her to try harder for herself personally. Connor's dynamic character just held my attention from the first page. His take charge, give no quarters attitude though annoying to Johanna and his family was not annoying to me. It in fact intrigued me and made me want to figure him out. The reader will be pleased with how this story ends and all the twists it takes to get there. I give this 4 STARS and would love to have you try this book. Let me know what you think! Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

This is the first in a new historical romantic suspense series set in the Victorian era. Johanna Templeton originally came to England from America to look after her ailing sister and her niece, Laurel. After her sister's untimely death, Johanna remained to care for Laurel whilst her brother-in-law continued to disappear from business trips. When he decided to take Laurel with him to Scotland, Johanna didn't think anything was awry until she learns that he has been killed and her niece is being kept captive until Johanna takes a certain book to her captor. This is the start of a fast paced adventure where Johanna is uncertain just who she can trust. She is rescued by a Highlander, Connor MacMasters, and he is determined to protect her - even from herself. As the attraction between them grows the goal is still to help get Laurel to safety. With armed assailants determined to take Johanna to their boss, her life and safety is in serious danger . . . Can he keep her safe? Will their mutual attraction take their focus off their ultimate goal of rescuing Laurel? Just who is behind the kidnapping and how can they protect each other and the child? Will love have a chance? This is an intriguing read, and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who enjoys stories with a well developed adventure, a treasure hunt, suspense, mystery and, of course, romance. Mind you, don't expect to solve the mystery early in this lengthy novel - you need to read to the end to discover all the aspects of the solution! I'm hoping that future books in this series will focus on other members of the MacMasters family, both male and female. Many thanks to the publishers for gifting me an ARC of this novel, without obligation, via NetGalley. This is my honest opinion after reading the novel.

This historical novel takes place during the Victorian times and is set between London and the Highlands. Connor comes from a very large family who have connections to the Crown. He doesn't stay in one place because of his line of work. This leaves little or no time for a permanent relationship. Johanna is an American romance author, currently residing in London for family reasons. She finds herself embroiled in a kidnapping and perilous danger. Johanna receives a note from the kidnapper, instructing her to travel to the Highlands to exchange a valuable object in return for her niece. Her first encounter with the enemy is rather unpleasant but her determination doesn't sway her from her goal. Connor has been tasked to retrieve a valuable artifact which could prove to be dangerous in the wrong hands. Unbeknown to Johanna, he has been following the progress of her journey. Just as well, as he is fully aware of the dangers the blackmailer represents. When Johanna's safety is threatened, he doesn't hesitate to intervene. He is intrigued by Johanna's strength of character and soon finds himself harbouring an attraction which he can neither entertain nor ignore. Johanna convinces herself that he is nothing but a rogue, not to be trusted. He is no better than those threatening her despite the fact that he endeavours to take her under his protection. I really like the concept of the story. There is danger. Intrigue. Love. Passion. Betrayal. Loyalty and greed. The MacMasters prove to be a supportive and devoted family. Despite being "rough around the edges" Connor is a lovable and strong main character with a terrific sense of humour. There is no question about Johanna's drive and determination to rescue her loved one. Unfortunately, her non stop internal debates become rather tedious. To me it spoils the flow of a good story. I received a complimentary eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

I am voluntarily submitting my honest review after receiving an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. I enjoyed the drama and suspense of this rollicking adventure across the Highlands. It has all the right ingredients for a wonderful book--romance, intrigue, mystery, a dashing hero with a dark soul in need of the right woman, a beautiful heroine who makes our hero a better man, an innocent child in need of rescue, evil villains obsessed with greed and power, and even a long-standing score to settle. However, these elements just don't seem to come together to form the fast-paced, hair-raising chase across the Highlands I expected. Much of the novel is dedicated to the characters' internal struggles to resist their attraction to one another and their laments about the perils of their plight with the villains. Relatively few chapters seemed to advance the plot significantly, but instead reveal emotional turmoil each person faces as they wait. While this may indeed be the most realistic course of events in a kidnap-for-ransom case, it does not always make for the most exciting reading, particularly when the same arguments are repeatedly reviewed. After a promising start, this book stalled out and took too long to reach its fairly predictable conclusion.

unlike the darkest london series, which i am currently also reading, the highland hearts series does not deal with things that go bump in the night. at the very least there are no werewolves or vampires or demons to worry about. but in the highlander who loved me there are thieves and murderers and evil kidnap pets who will think nothing of cutting short the lives of innocents. johanna templeton is desperate to save her niece, who has been taken and is being held hostage in exchange for a rare first edition copy of frankenstein. but the ransom demand isn't actually about the rare book. it's about finding the map to the demon's heart, a rare ruby linked to the macmasters family. the ruby is said to have rare powers that lead to unpleasantness, and the macmasters family has been charged with protecting and recovering these old scottish artifacts. so when connor macmasters saves johanna at the first encounter she has with the kidnapper's henchmen, she isn't sure whether she should be grateful or upset that she's a pawn in someone else's games. it takes her a while to trust connor, and this was actually something i found challenging in the novel, because he kept telling her he was trustworthy, and really nothing he did countered what he was telling her, but somehow she couldn't believe him. and i think maybe there was more backstory with being misled by the men in her life too many times before, but i feel like some of this was edited out of the novel. and i'm not saying that wasn't a bad thing, because i feel like the novel mostly worked as written, it's just that johanna's level of distrust didn't seem to be fair to connor. he was also just a super likable hero, so maybe this also made it difficult to understand johanna's reticence. but this was a great introduction to the series. the macmasters we do meet are all charming and aching for stories of their own. so there is a lot more exploring of this world that can happen. **the highlander who loved me will publish on december 12, 2016. i received an advance copy courtesy of netgalley/entangled publishing (select historical) in exchange for my honest review.

Another awesome read. This is a great book. I enjoyed reading it. The story is quite intriguing, it was hard to put down once I started reading it. Although that was kind of annoying because the book is very lengthy. ;) lol In any case I loved it and I'd be recommending it to anyone who enjoys historical fictions with mystery and romance involved. Johanna has no idea that a simple trade she arranged with her niece's kidnappers will turn into so much more, all thanks to Connor. It was quite simple, she will go to Highlands, give the book to the people who have her niece, get her back and then leave for America. But then things become very complicated, firstly her niece was not with the people who came to take the book. She was going to go with them but Connor interrupted. He seems to have an agenda of his own and Johanna can't decide whether to trust him or not. Connor can't believe that anyone is as silly as Johanna. She was willingly going with despicable people, who are surely up to no good. So he feels that he must save her. And in the process if he is able to get what he wants most then so be it. But the real question is if he could trust her or not. She may be fooling him with this damsel-in-distress charade, although it is a charade it isn't a good one because Johanna is not even a little bit thankful for all his help. They started as strangers, who soon became nemesis, then allies, and may be soon they will become even more than that. But a child's life is at stake here so there is only one thing to do. They must work together and solve the mystery as soon as possible. That will lead them to the person holding the kid. What happens afterwards, well that's not so important right now. It's quite intriguing story of adventure, treasure hunt, romance, and mysteries. I think all historical fiction fans will enjoy this one. Although if you are as impatient as I am when it comes to mysteries then read on your own risk. You will not get any answers until you have read it to the very end.

'The Highlander Who Loved Me' by Tara Kingston is the story of Johanna Templeton and Connor MacMasters. Johanna is originally from America but had come to London to care for her dying sister and help with her niece. After the death of her sister her brother in law had decided to take his daughter to the Highlands. But not long after Johanna received a ransom letter for her niece. It seems that her brother in law was not what he seemed and now her niece is being held for an exchange of a book that her brother in law left with her. Connor is on a mission as a spy for Queen Victoria and ends up monitoring Johanna. When Johanna and Connor meet she tries to keep what she is doing to herself as she is so worried for her niece but Connor slowly convinced her to let him help her. Along the way they couldn't stop their attraction from growing. This was an exciting and funny and a overall a great read! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
