The Holy Ghost
What is more important--the gift or the giver? What was more important to Jacob--all the wagons and donkeys that his long lost son Joseph sent to him or the fact that his son was alive and well? What was more important at Pentecost--the gift of tongues or the Gift Giver?
Christ, the Gift Giver, spoke of "another Comforter" (John 14:15) when He shared with His disciples that they would still have leadership that would function in His place when He was gone. Many think of this Comforter, also known as the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, as something akin to an electrical current or apparition. Biblical evidence is to the contrary.
God's Holy Bible clearly indicates that the Holy Ghost is a person, and He made His presence known to the believers in the upper room at Pentecost. Jesus announced that after He left earth to prepare a home for His followers (see John 14:2–3), He would send this member of the Godhead and that He would "guide you into all truth" (John 16:13).
Erroneous teachings about the Holy Spirit abound. Charismatic ministries teach that only ecstasy, euphoria, exuberance, and joy come from the Holy Spirit, which is only partially true. Unfortunately, many entities do not teach that the Holy Spirit also convicts us of the sin and error in our lives. We would do well to heed the promptings of the Holy Ghost. If we don't, we will end up like King Saul who abandoned God altogether, so he went to the grave in a hopeless state.
Unmistakably, the Holy Spirit leads us to spurn the things of this world so that we can travel the path that leads to eternal salvation. We would do well to follow Paul's admonition in Hebrews 3:7–8, 12: "Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: ... Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God."
