Overview

The Hunter Bride by Cynthia Woolf

Five years ago, a band of outlaws murdered Josephine Shafter's parents and younger brother. Desperate for vengeance, Jo has spent every day since serving the law as a bounty hunter. But the trouble with justice served is that now that her family's killer has been brought in, she has nothing to do and no one to hunt. She decides it may be time for a new life and a fresh start. She longs for the arms of a strong man around her, and for a child of her own. But the Chicago dandies don't know how to kiss a woman who is tougher than they are. Jo decides her best chance at happiness is to head out West, to the wild Montana territory, to start a new life as a mail order bride.

Sam Longworth has been the Sheriff of Hope's Crossing, Montana for two miserable years. He was much happier roaming the untamed plains as a bounty hunter, bringing outlaws to justice. But that was no life for a husband or father, and his wife wanted him home, safe and sound, every night. Forced into marriage, theirs had never been a love match, but he thought warming her bed every night would be enough. Instead she left him and took a stagecoach to rendezvous with her childhood sweetheart. She vowed never to return, and died on the journey.

Plagued by guilt over her death, Sam doesn't need a woman's love, he just needs a wife. He orders a mail order bride, a woman who won't make too many demands, who can build a home and give him children. Josephine fits his life perfectly, until danger follows her to her new home and he realizes she's keeping secrets that could get them both killed. Trust is a hard road for two lost souls used to keeping secrets, and their new and fragile love might not be strong enough to survive what's coming.

About the Author

Cynthia Woolf is the award winning and best-selling author of sixteen historical western romance books and two short stories with more books on the way. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was about one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia's father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Thought the idea of a woman bounty hunter was good. Story moved slowly therefore making reading it somewhat of a chore.

This is a true Cynthia Woolf classic. This is a nice way to read a book over again. Her books basically have the same theme. Nice and cute, not raunchy. Give her a try. Simone 24

I REJECT BEING IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE WHO CAN’T LOVE ME BACK I enjoyed this historical romantic suspense western with a mail order bride who is more than she lets on, trying to put her past behind her and a stubborn lawman who refuses to love again. Josephine Shafter came from a loving home, with a father who was a renowned bounty hunter and who trained her the same way. She has looks and nerves of steel, but now that she has captured Billy Jackson he has gone to trial, she is ready to settle down as a mail order bride in Montana. Sheriff Sam Longworth needs and wants a wife, but after his first wife left him, he swears he will never love another woman again, just care for her. Secrets eventually will be revealed, life and death moments, kidnap and capture and eventually it will come to an end. When it is over what will come of Sam and Jo? She can’t live without love. The plot kept the pages turning in this cat and mouse game of bounty hunter and fugitive. The story has a great cast of characters, entertaining and emotional dialog and intense moments. How close must you come to losing someone close before you realize that life will never be the same without them? Life and death situations can be the greatest eye-opener to seeing what real love is.

The female protagonist was the only fleshed out character with flaws. Her husband was boring. He made no mistakes. He knew his wife's big secret and did nothing with it. I really wanted to like the book but I couldn't finish it. I got halfway through before I gave up.

I received a complimentary book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I am a big romantic western fan, and for many years, I have been complaining over the scarcity of western books available. Unfortunately, many of the authors for this genre no longer write anymore or, like Lorraine Heath, have completely switched to other genres. Fortunately, for those of us who like this genre, I have found that many e-book authors write romantic westerns. One of these authors is Cynthia Woolf. I have already read one of her books, and I am very excited to say that she does a wonderful job of fulfilling my need to read this genre . The Hunter Bride is about Josephine “Jo” Shafter who is a bounty hunter. When her mother and father and little brother were murdered, Jo made the decision to hunt for the murderer and bring him to justice. She was extremely competent at this because her father was a bounty hunter. Since, for years, Jo was his only child, he taught her his trade as if she were his son. When she finally captures the man, Jo realizes that she has to leave town if she wants to get married because everyone in her town, knew about her rough and tough life. Therefore, Jo decides to be a mail order bride. Jo Shafter is a prime example of the “western woman.” She can take care of herself because she is an expert at shooting a gun and fighting off anyone who attacks her. She is not a “yes sir, no sir” wife who kowtows to her husband because she always speaks her mind. In spite of those traits, Jo still wants to get married and have children even though she cooks very little and does not know how to iron and clean house. Her husband-to-be is Sam Longworth, the sheriff of Hope’s Crossing Montana Territory. He is so ready to meet his new bride-to-be that he has it set up that they will get married as soon as Jo arrive. Sam is also an example of the “western man.” He accepts Jo as she is. It is hard work to be a wife in the old west, so these women must be strong and able to handle themselves in difficult situations. The fact that she is learning to cook and do the household chores does not bother him at all. I especially like that Jo and Sam like are compatible with each other and work together, help each other, and respect each other from the beginning. In fact, the problems in this story come, mostly, from outside of the couple’s marriage. I am so happy that I have been able to find an author who writes great romantic suspense. I have greatly missed this genre in books and am very happy that Cynthia Woolf has been able to fulfill my longing with her wonderful stories. For all you romantic western readers, I highly suggest you find Cynthia Woolf’s books, and read them. In fact, The Hunter Bride is a good place to begin since this is the beginning of a new series.

Jo Shafter has decided to become a wife after finally putting the man who killed her family in jail. She becomes Sam Longworth’s mail order bride but both come into the marriage with secrets. Neither is willing to admit they love the other and yet they both care a great deal. Jo has things to learn about being a wife and keeping a house but when she finds out that Billy Jackson has escaped and is looking for her her bounty hunting skills reemerge and one of Sam’s secrets is shared, too. Eventually all is put right in their world and the end of another mail order bride story is concluded. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC to read and review.

Jo Shafter has been bounty hunting for a while and after the last five years of tracking down each and every murder in the gang that killed her parents and brother she has decided to settle down. She wants to have a family of her own but all the men who know her are scared of her so she decided to start fresh and become a mail-order bride. She decides to keep some things from her soon to be husband. Sam Longworth is the sheriff of Hope’s Crossing and soon to be married to Jo. Sam was married before and has issues with love, but he wants a wife to cook, clean and have his babies. Sam also has secrets of his own . However when a blast from Jo’s past shows up and is determined to take revenge on her and Sam both will they be able to confide in each other? Will Sam be able to get over the hurt from his past? I Love all of Cynthia Woolf’s books!! I received The Hunter Bride (Hope’s Crossing Book 1) as an ARC and I couldn’t put it down! If you haven’t read any of Cynthia’s books you need to because your missing out!! This book had me crying and laughing. I cannot wait for the other books in Hope’s Crossing to come out!

Two characters that you can root for Jo'so and Sam both go into the mail order marriage with secrets in their pasts that cause problems down the road (of course) . Unknown to either of them is a surprise connection between them. The story is light but active with occasional humor. The villain is wicked and love wins out.
