4.5 Stars. First book I have ever read from the point of view of a eunuch. Set in the Ottoman Empire and harem, Olin is likable, pitiable, and resourceful; certainly someone one could root for. His love interest, Dark Star, is also an intriguing character, who is more than what she seems. And then there's the Jinni in a small bottle, with only three wishes available to give. Disclaimer: I'm acquainted with the author IRL and won a candle at the book launch for this novel. The erotic scenes are VERY well written and extremely hot; the scenes of castration and torture, also rich in historical and brutal detail. If you're reading bits of this novel to a partner to spice up your love life, mind you don't mix them up. Did you know eunuchs, depending on the type of procedure, could have erections? I do, now. Which kind of made life even worse for them. There's a HEA (Happily Ever After), after some twists and turns in directions I did not expect. Overall, I really liked it, but am still cringing about some of the scenes and the reality of how unpleasant life could be for everyone in that situation, even those theoretically at the top of the harem hierarchy.

This is a beautifully researched and richly nuanced read. The characters are never formulaic and the real details of the world are just as compelling as the magical elements. Olin is a truly original lead character. I was so drawn into his story and the sumptuous, but brutal reality of his life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction - or just a great read.

Zenobia Neil’s “The Jinni’s Last Wish” which she terms a historical fantasy, upends every romance cliché about genies and three wishes, glamorous and lusty sheiks, and history as seen through a rose-colored filter. It is, quite simply, a richly told, carefully researched story about a eunuch—yes, a eunuch—whose job is it is to watch over and punish the females in the harem of a long ago Turkish kingdom. He is named Olin and he has a conscience, which makes him silently question the world he lives in and makes him wish for death. A female named Dark Star intrigues him: she is beautiful, mysterious, there is an aura of other-worldliness, about her. Their journey through this world of cruelty, slavery, punishment, and opium use in Neal’s lush, often erotic, and confident writing elevates “The Jinni’s Last Wish” and makes the book a must-read. Five stars for sure.

Who would have thought that history is so sexy? The Jinni’s Last Wish is a riveting tale that takes the reader to a unique historical space—a harem of the Ottoman Empire—one that few readers know about let alone fantasize about. I love the way that Zenobia Neil cuts no corners with her historical accuracy but relishes in a history retold through the lens of how women might think about and experience the Harem. Our desire and sensuality is at the center of her tale, as she critiques power but allows women throughout the novel to claim their pleasure in wonderfully unique ways. The central character is male but occupies a unique positionality as well, given that he is a eunuch—not man, not woman. But he is on our side, working in our interests and with our pleasure in mind. In fact, Zenobia Neil allows us to empathize with the plight of a wide array of characters who find themselves imprisoned and resisting in different ways. There are twists and turns to this story that are not predictable—I couldn’t put it down and read the novel in two days! I love the story arc! I could not figure out how the power struggles would be resolved, and I was both surprised and pleased with the resolution. Wonderfully rich, sexy, and loaded with historical detail—this is truly a unique and exciting read.
