For centuries professional military officers, analysts, historians, statesmen, and sociologists have sought formulas that objectively and quantitatively measure their intuitive feelings for such things as the degree to which one side in a battle was superior to another, and the bitterness and intensity of a battle. This work defines objective and quantitative measures and shows that empirically they correspond quite well to the intuitive features for which they are named.
