Richard Davis brings the scholarship and intuitions of an LDS political scientist (and advocate of civic engagement) to bear on the issue of whether a member of the LDS Church can simultaneously be a political liberal and a church member in good standing? Through numerous references to LDS canon and history, the literature of political philosophy, and personal anecdotes, Davis argues both sides of the issue before concluding in the affirmative. Along the way, he offers an introduction to pertinent LDS doctrine, to philosophical concepts related to conservatism and liberalism, and to the cultural strains of each that may be discerned in LDS history and that account for the current prevalence of ultraconservatism in the state of Utah, where the majority of citizens are LDS. Thus, Davis’s book is meant for readers LDS and not, who share a common interest in the issue, in the divisiveness that attends it, and in factors, changing and unchanging, that may loosen that divide.
