Fabulous animals, specters from the shadow world, nature spirits, and sacred beings: these are the monstrous, marvelous, and mythic creatures that have come down to us in folklore and legend. Some probably have their origins in reality; others spring completely from the imagination—and they are all here, in this stunningly illustrated bible. It’s rich in history and images, and international in scope, covering dragons and serpents; weird insects like the Aztec Itzpapalotl; zombies, golems, and banshees; the watery Undine; the Monkey King, Sun Wukong; and much, much more. A fascinating and informative work.

I have been a fan of mythical creatures for years and have constantly searched for an encyclopedia type book with every or close to every mythical creature. It would have to be one with good descriptions and authentic pictures either from the era of belief or a proper artist rendition. Sadly I'm still searching. However, this book gives the reader an idea of the creature they are searching for and you must do more research elsewhere on that creature if you want the full detail. The book is small (about 5x4 inches) and pretty heavy for its size. The descriptions for each monster is about a paragraph (though a page in this book) on average, but each one gives good detail to give you the idea of what is creature is. By what I'm reading, it seems to me to give you the feeling of the "common knowledge" that each person had at the time on a specific creature. For me, it does enough to tell me the origin of the creature and a short description to research it online. So, I would recommend this to a fantasy writer looking for a mythical creature to fit a scenario. The illustrations are exactly how the cover portrays, concept art based. However, there are some photos of real life statues and drawn illustrations from the era. On how many creatures are in the book, I was honestly surprised by the quantity. Sure it has your standards (unicorns, dragons and giants), but when I first opened it, I found many I've never even heard of. I guarantee you will as well. However, it is far from covering all of the mythical creatures. Things like the yuki-onna, the pukwudgie and gargoyles are not in this book. I've even found it lacks greatly on Japanese mythical creatures, but it does mention the fox spirits. To me it seems to branch more on Norse, German and English mythical creatures than the others, though it does have modern American (such as the jackalope) which was a surprising change. Each one is even categorized such as fae, beasts, astrological and others. I also enjoyed how they compare the similarity of two different creatures such as in the zombie section with draugr versus the vodou zombi. It was even a relief to finally find one that depicts kobolds as little men and NOT lizards! So, if you want an extremely detailed book on every creature, this is not for you. But if you want one that gives you an idea of what you're looking for in quick detail or you're just starting out wanting to learn about mythical creatures, then buy this book. Rated 4 stars for overview being overly dramatized making a buyer think they are getting more than a small book with a paragraph of detail for each creature. Also, the book was a bit damaged due to shipping; this had to do with the way it was shipped, a box larger than the book with no packing material causing it to shift around allowing it to become bent in corners and across the cover.

It had everything I could think of to want to look up right there inside its pages. It was insightful and gave plenty of detail. The art and pictures were especially wonderful in what each creature looks like. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants information on any mythical creature, all in one book.
