About the Author

Jim Haycraft was born into an impoverished branch of an old, long established Kentycky family able to trace its roots back to a criminal sentenced by an English Court to seven years indenture. He was forced to drop out of school at sixteen and help support his family. Scarcely past his seventeenth birthday, he convinced his mother to sign for him to join the Air Force. During his career, Jim obtained his high school diploma and graduated from St. Leo College (now St. Leo University), a small Catholic college in Florida where he graduated Magma Cum Laud. His career. took him to Sidi Slimane Air Base, a base located on the edge of the desert in Morocco, to Karamursel Air Base Turkey, Aero Porte' de Ghedi, an Italian Air Force Base east of Milan Italy and two tours in Vietnam at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, an old French Air Force Base on the outskirts of Saigon. His service included domestic bases in Texas, California, Washington, Wyoming and Virginia. After twenty one years, he retired while assigned as the 6th Air Borne Command Post located at Langley Air Force Base, Hampton Virginia. He retired first to Houston before moving to Humble, a suburb north of Houston. During his service time, he worked with Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout units as well as coaching little league baseball and football teams. He is currently active in the Humble VFW Post and edits the the post and department newsletters. .
