This book is wonderful. It is a great addition to a craft library as well as a wonderful gift. I fell in love with the author's soaps BEFORE the book was even a thought. The book, The Natural Soap Chef, is beautifully done. It is a nice size book. The recipes are clear to understand and the batches not overly huge. While reading the recipes you get a feel of the author's sense of why she choose the ingredients she did. The soaps are refreshing, smell wonderful and make you feel good (inside and out) knowing that you are using good natural ingredients on your skin as well as helping with the carbon footprint. My mantra is "If you cannot eat it, should you put it on your skin? Your LARGEST organ?" Heidi re-enforces this thought with her natural, well-thought-out recipes in The Natural Soap Chef. She even includes how to make your own labels! She has done her homework well and the finished products you will want to make again and again, being tempted to eat them but don't, just smell and lather! Be prepared to fall in love over and over as each new soap is made.
A huge disappointment from something titled The Natural Soap Chef. Besides the fact that the base soap recipe is almost identical for every soap in the book, FRAGRANCE OILS ARE NOT NATURAL. I know of no natural soapmaking group in which members consider fragrance oils to be natural. Phthalate-free or not, they are still lab-created scents. I would venture to say that most people looking to avoid artificial ingredients in bath products are looking to avoid fragrance oils - they are headache-inducing in many people, just to name one reason why. To call this book The Natural Soap Chef and yet include fragrance oils in almost every recipe is hugely misleading.
