Description: This is a coding manual for established physician-based coders that provides numerous practice cases for coders to complete that will allow them to strengthen their coding skills. This 2015 edition includes updated codes and coding guidance.
Purpose: It provides numerous cases that are coded with HCPCS (Level I and II) procedure codes and ICD-10-CM/ICS-9-CM diagnosis codes. A book like this is valuable for practicing coders because it allows them to continue to enhance their coding skills.
Audience: The audience is practicing physician-based coders. Ms. Buck is a well known and respected coding instructor.
Features: This manual covers all procedural areas included in the HCPCS Level I (CPT) coding book. It includes excellent excerpts of medical record documentation, such as consultation reports, history and physician reports, operative reports, etc. which are desired for advanced education of coders. It highlights common diagnoses but does not discuss advanced diagnosis coding in detail. The book is well designed and contains sufficient information for a coder to complete the material without the need of an instructor. It would be helpful to include the coding rationale for the cases. The manual includes the answers, but a discussion of why the answer is correct would be very helpful as it is most likely that established students would be completing this work on their own rather than in a classroom setting.
Assessment: This is an excellent procedural coding manual for experienced physician-based coders. It provides numerous case studies that can be completed at an individual user's pace. Although it does include some discussion of diagnosis, it does not include advanced discussion on complicated diagnosis-based cases. However, this is lacking in most advanced coding manuals. This book is updated yearly to incorporate newly released codes and current coding advice.
