What a wonderful collection of stories! Ioana Visan is a wordsmith able to take the subject of a future world at war that lacks much, including prosthetics, and create characters unlike any I have encountered before. Each character has a short story to him or herself. Each story builds a more complete view of the circus and the people working in the circus as well as how they work together as a unit that is much like a family. I have to say that this is an anthology I loved. I would love to read more about these characters in the future! This is a truly well-crafted group of stories that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys something a bit out of the ordinary and willing to encounter some intriguing characters.
Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite The Nightingale Circus by Ioana Visan is a short story collection in the Broken People series. It tells the story of the fascinating members of the circus. We learn about their past, how they ended up at the circus and the work that they do, as well as their relationships between each other. With beautiful and intriguing cover art, it didn't take long for me to fully immerse myself in this book. The collection opens with The Nightingale. Cielo’s singing voice is not just beautiful, but has a power to enchant. This leads some people to fear her, and she’s constantly in danger of being kidnapped by people who want to use her ability for their own purposes. She makes a painful decision in order to be free from the dangers and her own fear. In The Blade Masters, worn-out soldiers Rake and Spinner turn their lives around when they meet Big Dino, owner of the Nightingale Circus. The story goes on introducing Nicolas the Magician, Anya the Swan, Riella the Firebird, Fei Lin the Rocket Girl, and Aurore the Golden Lady. The Nightingale Circus is not just about biological rarities, physically unusual humans, or people with other extraordinary abilities. Each member of the circus is an interesting individual with relatable sentiments, despite their extraordinary condition. It has so much to savor: the familiar yet freshly spun cyberpunk theme, and an original storyline boosted by fine prose. Ioana Visan certainly delivers a superb prequel to Broken People, which I absolutely look forward to reading.
This is a collection of short stories that gives the back stories of the characters in the Nightingale Circus. We learn how each person became a member of the Circus or someone important to it. I liked finding out about how this group of people got together. Each has a reason to be there, whether it is because of a physical reason or a societal reason. I like how the world building of the Broken People series stays true to the world first met in Broken People. Aurore who is the Golden Lady in Broken People has an interesting story. I do not believe her whole story has been revealed though. I look forward to more tales coming from the Broken People world. It is going to be a wild ride as we find out more about how this world is at war and how some have power. I am ready for more.
