The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren

"Phenomenal. Gets my highest recommendation!" —LORELEI JAMES, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author

It's been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she'd never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs...

Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence.

The Ones Who Got Away is an incredibly sincere and shockingly fun story about the life of Liv Arias. In her senior year of high school, she was a survived a horrific school shooting that killed many of her classmates. When she returns to the site to answer questions for an up-coming documentary years later, she see him. Finn Dorsey. Her old boy-friend from high school. As she feels this old flame re-ignite she realizes that her life may not be what she's really wanted. This is a book that leaves so many different impressions on me. The aspect of the school shooting tragedy, about having to live the rest of your life honoring those who died was an intense conversation, that was somehow perfectly balanced by the fun chemistry of the couple and their love. I really grew close to the two characters and felt myself rooting for them. They felt well-developed and complete. The story was simple, but held a lot of emotion within it. This book didn't need any sort of twists to be entertaining. I found that I didn't want to put the book down. I think this was an amazing and beautiful love story, but also a book with a lovely message about life. I loved it and I highly recommend it.

Liv came to help with the documentary, the twelve years that she had spent away was not long enough to erase the memories. Finn had changed, for what stood across the room from Liv was still the old Finn but time had been good to him. Meeting up with “the girls”, rereading on slips of paper their hopes and dreams, the girls saw that their lives didn’t fulfill what they had hoped to accomplish. The tragic event that had occurred 12 years ago had changed this group, had provoked in them an energy, a desire to make a difference and now, 12 years later as they meet up again, they are now readdressing this issue again. I really enjoyed the plot of this novel. I liked how the characters were brought together, not the circumstances but how they rallied together twelve years ago. Since leaving, Liv has been diving into her work, focusing on making a name for herself and trying to put her past behind her. Finn has been on assignment and its time that he takes a break. The girls haven’t left the area and they realize they need to make some changes in their lives. There’s sexual tension between Liv and Finn the minute that their eyes meet. There has to be some history between the two of them but no one seems to know anything. As Finn takes the summer off to relax at a nearby cabin, he offers part of the cabin to Liv so she’d have a place to fulfill her lost dreams on the weekend. Things definitely get hot at the cabin when Liv shows up and when she returns to her job, Liv and Finn can’t wait till the weekend when Liv returns. What will happen when summer is over and Finn goes back to work? Will any of them be able to make a change in their life? Are they able to change? I really enjoyed this novel, it definitely was a steamy one. 4.5 stars This is my opinion of this novel which I have won in a BookishFirst drawing. Thank you for this novel.

When I read the excerpt of this book months ago, I knew that this book what going to be different to what I've been reading lately. With the advent of self-publishing sometimes is hard to find a read that shakes you to the core. This book is one of these reads. The premise of the book is different: School shooting survivors reuniting for a documentary. The first thing I want to say about that is that the author handled a delicate theme with the utmost respect. This wasn't a cheap plot point. It was a well thought out. I especially liked how she handled talking about survivor's trauma. And when you think about all that I am saying here, you still don't think this will a romance book. Hence the magic of this book: In a world of excess and shock value, the delicate handling of the book's theme is what makes this a great book. Romance has flourished in the midst of all this horror...And doesn't this give you hope? I can't wait for "The One You Can't Forget"!

The Ones Who Got Away is the first book in a series by the same name about several survivors of a school shooting (at the prom, nonetheless! OMG, the descriptions/nightmares here were vivid--just a heads-up), twelve years later. This one deals with two of the survivors, Liv and Finn; the only other survivors we meet are all women (Rebecca, Kincaid, and Taryn) so presumably their SOs will not be fellow survivors...? Though I could be wrong--time will tell. Anyway... The four women, who hadn't been particularly close before the shooting, came together afterwards and at one point before graduating and going their separate ways, wrote letters to be opened in ten years in which they each pledged--to themselves and to honor their classmates who didn't "get away"--to do certain things with their lives. They all missed the decade mark, but when they are brought back to town for a documentary about their experience, the woman who had custody of the letters brings them with her. Over drinks, the four of them read their letters out loud and decide what they have or haven't accomplished (with not a little bit of justification and hedging on some of their parts--and a teensy bit of cringing, too ;)) Liv's pretty sure she doesn't actually need to go through with her younger self's plans--and absolutely sure that she doesn't need to pick things up with Finn where they left off (she was from the wrong side of the tracks, and his father was very controlling and not terribly nice, to put it mildly, so theirs was a secret relationship) but of course fate--and Ms. Loren--have other ideas. I loved watching Liv and Finn as they reconnected, came to terms with their pasts, and figured out a way that they could move together into a future--second chance romance at its best :) I'm not sure how this managed to be my first book from Ms. Loren, but it absolutely won't be my last! Rebecca's story is next--can't wait! Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

While this story revolves around some dark stuff, it also deals with healing. This group gets together after all these years to film a documentary for the anniversary, and they manage to come together. None of them would have been friends beforehand, but their shared suffering has brought them together and they form a bond that cannot be broken. I know the story focuses on the second chance romance of Finn and Liv, but I really liked seeing the girls all come together. They were such a random mix of personalities and backgrounds but they all had one thing in common, and that is what brought them together and made them become almost sisters. Now, I won’t lie to you, the romance was off the charts. Which is to be expected when Roni is writing. So, if you are a romance junkie like myself, you won’t be disappointed. That cover? Yeah, that’s a hot and steamy scene from the book. Finn and Liv may not have seen each other since the shooting, but their romance apparently never dwindled throughout the years. I could honestly go on and on about this story. I just loved everything about it. It was the perfect balance between dark and romance. The time-frame of when I read it in relation to a mass shooting, really brought it home for me. So, it really brought out a lot of emotion. I found myself really attached to all the characters I met, no matter how brief their moment in the story was. Yeah, when you find yourself a blubbering mess because of a dedication to the victims that takes place in the story, you know the author has written one hell of a story.

I won a copy of this book from Bookish. It was such a good story from start to finish. It had so much emotion, some that may be more than you asked for but it was so good. I loved everything about this book. It was sad at the beginning with the shooting and deaths. It was emotional when the friends who survived were reminiscing and it was hot when Liz and Finn finally got together, even if it was suppose to be just for the summer. I did good reading this. No tears. Until very near the end. Then of course it got emotional and then came the tears. I loved this book from the first to the last and look forward to the next one. I so hope I get a chance to win a copy for Bookish again. Or get it from NetGalley. But if not I will get a copy. There are several characters in this book that I hope are written about. Liv’s support team from high school. And possibly more from Liz and Finn. It is a heartbreaking story about loss yet a hot story when it comes to Liv and Finn. Going back and forth between the past and present was so nice. I love books that do that. It explained so much. This was a great book. Well worth reading. Unless you don’t like steamy sex scenes that is.

A gripping, heartfelt second-chance romance set in an horrific background. It is full of emotion with strong characters. A story that pulls you in and has you cheering for the HEA. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

"The Ones Who Got Away" is a powerful second chance romance set 12 years after a school shooting. Olivia and Finn had been secretly dating their senior year of high school, secret largely because Olivia's father was Finn's parents' landscaper and they would not approve. More publicly, he was semi-dating another wealthy girl, Rebecca. When the teens began shooting at prom, Finn and Olivia were in a closet making out. When he heard Rebecca yelling, he left the closet, leaving Olivia to fend for herself, and became a hero by taking a bullet for Rebecca. The two didn't see each other until the unexpected reunion 12 years later (a film crew was making a documentary to benefit charity and they returned for this). In the time since the shooting, both have been facing their demons and PTSD. Olivia is working in web design but leads a lonely life, and Finn works for the FBI, where he had been undercover for a few years- also very lonely. Seeing each other again quickly rekindles the feelings they had for each other in high school. As they are reminded of who they were and the promises they had made to themselves in the aftermath of the shooting, both take steps to live up to their passions and self-promises. Thus, they embark on a journey together, to spend the weekends of the summer together while Liv pursues her photography and Finn recuperates before returning to the FBI. Although it begins as platonic, their magnetic pull is hard to resist. This was a really beautiful story about second chances and healing, perhaps more powerful because we hear not only about the immediate aftermath but also the long road to recovery (as it is set 12 years later). The romance and passion between the two was perfect- we get to see them build a new relationship plus hear about their history. There is a lot of unresolved sexual tension and several deliciously steamy scenes. Overall, it's a really powerful romance and I highly recommend it. As a warning, this does have some hard-to-read scenes and it is not always pretty (in terms of the school shooting and recovery) for people who might be sensitive. However, I absolutely think it is worth reading. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I first heard about this book on Bookish First and I was enraptured by the first few chapters. I just knew I had to read this book. I was lucky enough to be accepted as an ARC reader and I know this review has come out after the book was released but that was because I received it last week via Bookish First though I will admit, I was accepted as a Netgalley reader too (yes, I was that in love with just the preview I asked to read the book on NetGalley too which is really completely rare for me. I was really scared this book was going to hit all of the wrong buttons but I was so completely impressed. Roni Loren has a way about writing that makes you feel like you are sitting on the sidelines watching this all take place. I felt the emotions of the characters and they were realistic. I love how each character was unique and relatable in a way. The characters were well thought out and I loved the personalities of each one. I also loved the friendship and comradery that was in this book between the main characters. I felt like I was hanging out with some of my friends while I was reading it. Liv & Finn were by far my favorite characters (which tends to happen with main characters). The banter they had was amazing and I found myself swooning for Finn many times while also cursing his name at other times. I honestly just loved the chemistry between the two of them. It made me want to live passionately too. The plot of this book is unfortunately realistic and I loved that it humanized the survivors of this horrid act of violence. Too many times we think of survivors as props in a way. I've never been in a situation like this but I know people who have. I was a grade schooler in Colorado when the Columbine shooting happened and I graduated from Arapahoe High School about 10 years ago so I see a lot of the press that happens when an anniversary happens. It's a constant barrage of news articles anytime April or December come around. I love how this book made the characters, the survivors, all be humans who are messed up and yet surviving. I loved that. All in all, I loved this book. This book is messy, beautiful, heart wrenching, and just spectacular. If any part of this book sounds like it's up your alley, pick up the book and read it. It's wonderful.

I love this book so much! Two high school (secret) sweethearts reunite in this tale of what happens to two adults after being victims of a school shooting. Finn is easily a lovable hero who psychologically battles his own demons. While Olivia is equally exploring her own path and growing from a tragedy she has long since let herself stayed recluse because of. This fast paced book while make you laugh out loud, say some "aww"'s out loud and feel good. I can't wait to read the next installment and see what happens to the others that have been a part of this book. Roni delivers what she does best - an excellent story, amazing writing and book you do not want to put down! This is definitely a 2018 must read for everyone!!

Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. Review: Tragedy, secret romance and second chances is what this book is full of. As teenagers when their school becomes the site of a mass shooting, it changes the life of 5 students. Years later they come together again for a documentary. It brings up regrets, redemption and closure. At the heart of this story is Liv and Finn who were secretly dating when tragedy strikes and we see what their choices bring about and how it tears these two apart. Later they come together and that spark of love is still there. They must both come to grips with the past and give in to their love. All of Ms. Loren's books have a lot of emotional quality to them, this one is even more so. Maybe it is the subject matter, mass shootings, but it is what comes after too. The After is handled excellently and you really care about what happened to all of the characters and especially want Liv and Finn to come together. As for Liv and Finn, there is really nothing not to like about both of them. They are at a crossroads and really like the process and outcome of how they work towards being a couple. Another thing I really liked was how the shooting brought together the group of girls who would not have become friends if not for working through what happened. I liked that they were strong and supportive of each other. This is the first book in the series and I really cannot wait to see which person gets their story next. Excellently written with romance with heart. 4.5Stars *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher.*

4.5 Stars Both uplifting and heart-rending, this book was unputdownable. Roni Loren treads thoughtfully with a weighty subject, school shootings, and the result is a thought-provoking and emotional read. The survivors of the Long Acre school shooting have returned for a difficult reunion, a documentary about the shooting and "The Ones Who Got Away". Olivia and Finn, two survivors with an unresolved past, haven't seen each other in more than a decade. When they run into each other, it knocks emotions loose that have been tightly held for years. Taking the reader from present to past, we learn the devastating events of the day that changed their lives and how certain choices, secrets, and things left unsaid can hurt, even change the way you see yourself and how you are willing to walk through life. I adored Olivia and Finn. I couldn't help but root for them as they battled their personal demons. The secondary characters injected levity and a bit of fun—especially Kincaid—while others added a bit of tension. And, while I might have been a bit worried at points that the story could dive into an easy trope or two to drive the story, I needn't have been. This author didn't take that route, thankfully, and what we get is great storytelling. If you are looking for a poignant, emotional read, I highly recommend The Ones Who Got Away. I will definitely be reading the next in the series. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and voluntary.

The Ones Who Got Away is the first book I've read by Roni Loren, but it will not be my last! The premise for this second chance romance is deep and darker, focusing on the survivors of a high school shooting. Not only do we get to see a relationship unfold between Finn and Olivia, but we also get to watch as the four girlfriends (who were not such prior to the tragedy) build true friendships with each other. Finn and Olivia had a conflicted history in high school, so I am glad they got their second chance to explore their connection and develop a meaningful relationship. Furthermore, I LOVED the banter between Finn and Liv; I found myself smiling or smirking (as called for) throughout the book. This couple had such great chemistry, and they complemented each other so well! I look forward to reading the other girlfriends' stories. ***I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy provided by the publisher via BookishFirst.**

Wow! This book grabbed me from the start and wouldn’t let go! I don’t normally read contemporary love stories, or any kind of love unless it is paranormal or erotica, but when I read the blurb about survivors of a school shooting I thought it sounded really interesting. I noticed the reviews with 3 Stars were mainly thinking this was more just a romance and thought it had too much of the violence or story about shooting. Some thought it was too insta-love with Finn and Liv. I think I liked it because there was more story about events that happened in, not only Finn and Liv’s lives, but also those who survived and became friends with her afterwards. The romance was a bonus. Liv had moved away and hadn’t talked to anyone who survived since high school. It just brought back too many memories to everyone involved so they just went about their daily lives trying to forget and make the most of it. I feel like that is one thing that has helped them become successful. Live and some other classmates made a pact their senior year to live life to the fullest for the survivors who would never get the chance to follow their dreams. They were determined to make things happen. I also believe this is why Liv ad her friends aren’t married. They never have time because of work and life. I loved the characters and Liv’s friend Kincaid is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to see if she gets a book. I didn’t think Finn and Liv were too insta-love. After all, in high school they were crazy about each other, even if they never mentioned love. At that age, sometimes you’re afraid to because you’re afraid it will ruin what you have. And who has the nerve to be the first to say it? Liv is grasping onto life like she said she would. Trying to be fearless, not reckless. She is, I think, 30 years old now and has never forgotten Finn or felt the same with anyone. It was mentioned in the beginning how Finn was thinking they were both seeing each other as the people they were in high school. The people in the now were totally different. But deep down, the old Finn and Liv were in there. I feel like it was the perfect timing for them. And they could help each other heal.

After reading the expert, I could not wait to get my hands on this book. I loved getting to know Olivia and Finn. Olivia, or Livvy as she is referred to by her friends, was a joy to learn more about. I found it really interesting that she loved photography and had a slight rebellious streak in high school. Finn was a mystery to me and it was awesome to get to learn more about him, especially about when he was with Livvy in high school. I think I had misunderstood some previous context and it wasn't until later in the novel did I realize he wasn't dating anyone else when he was dating her. I really enjoyed how they reminisced on the lighter, better parts of high school and it was interesting to see how that played out in present day. Some parts of the story and dialogue felt clunky to me, but overall I enjoyed reading.

engaging, emotional, passionate THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY is the first instalment in Roni Loren’s contemporary, adult THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY romance series focusing on the survivors of a mass shooting the night of their senior prom-Finn, Olivia, Rebecca Lindt, Taryn Landry and Kincaid Breslin. This is thirty-year olds FBI agent Finn Dorsey, and photographer Olivia ‘Liv’ Arias’s story line. Told from dual third person perspectives (Liv and Finn) THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY follows the rebuilding relationship between photographer Liv Arias, and FBI agent Finn Dorsey. Twelve years earlier two gunmen (and fellow students) shot up the Long Acre High senior prom leaving only a few to survive including Liv Arias, a woman who struggles with memories of that night, and the loss of her friendship with the boy she would always love. Enter FBI agent Finn Dorsey, the young man, who despite his actions, probably saved our heroine’s life but a man who battles demons of his own. A filmmaker will bring together the remaining survivors as they recount the events of that fateful day. Finn Dorsey’s return to civilization comes with the knowledge that life as he knows it has inevitably changed. Undercover for the past two years Finn’s recuperation and down time finds our hero facing a past he has never forgotten, a past he is unable to forgive himself for almost killing the woman with whom he would fall in love. Liv Arias has struggled since the fateful day twelve years earlier but her life as a photographer and website designer is busy enough to keep the demons at bay. The relationship between Liv and Finn is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people caught between life and death when a gunman target the people who ‘did him harm’. Finn Dorsey knows that his time on leave is temporary as he awaits his next assignment-an assignment that will pull our hero from Olivia’s life. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. The banter between Finn and Olivia is fun, sassy and not without some great sexual innuendo. THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY is a story of second chances; romance and love; rekindling friendships, and letting go of the past. The premise is engaging and emotional; the romance is passionate and intimate; the characters are colorful and bold. THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY is an encouraging and inspiring look at loss and survival.

This book....y'all this book is....I'm just blown away. This is actually my first book by this author and was super thrilled to see that there are more books in store for the other characters in this one! This is an amazing story of healing, hope and new beginnings with old flames and non-friends. You know those kinds, the ones you knew but were not friends with and were the ones they talked about or teased or mocked. Well those are the survivors and have all come back to retell their story of a horrific event in high school. I felt like I was also back in my high school years, wanting to just do what I needed to do to get out of there. That my friends, is the gift of a good story teller. The feels, the emotions, the power in her words to bring you back to emotions felt years ago, like these characters. I got the goosebumps and the skipped heart beats, along with the retelling of their night. I loved the reconnection of Finn and Liv, even though in high school they had to be together on the sly because of family backgrounds (ugh). Their feelings came tumbling back to the front burner and never simmered. They will make you laugh and cry and feel the same awkardness in the beginning that they felt. LOVE this book!

Ripped my heart out, shredded it and then healed it. I think I've read everything that Roni Loren has written. I started out with her Loving on the Edge series when I discovered the books in digital format at my public library. I immediately checked all of her books out and devoured them. Next for me was her Pleasure Principle series; also devoured. For readers of those to very erotic romance series I caution you that The Ones Who Got Away (TOWGA) is not an erotic romance, but, OMG – this story! If this story doesn't win an award by some noted organization for romance authors it will be a terrible injustice IMHO. TOWGA is one of the most compelling stories I've read in a while; easily in my top 5 for 2017 (not published until 2018). I've said it before; a good writer can excel in more than one genre/subgenre and this proves that about Roni Loren. Although this is not an erotic romance like most of her other books, there is enough hot, sexy time to be very satisfying. There is simply no way for me to do justice to this book with anything that I'd write. A review copy was provided by the publisher via NetGalley but this did not influence my opinion or rating of the book.

Although this is a second chance romance, it is truly so much more than that. It is an emotional and heartbreaking story and while some of it was difficult, I enjoyed it very much. At it's core, this is a love story and is at times is sad, sweet and hot. An extremely traumatic event in high school, the likes if which no one should have to endure, tore Liv and Finn apart and changed their lives forever. They went through hell back for some years to follow while they learned to put their lives back together again and deal with the aftermath. 12 years later Liv and the rest of the survivors return home because of a documentary about the tragic massacre. It is there she sees Finn again for the first time and the air still crackles between them. They have never lost what has always been between them. They rekindle their romance but can they continue to move forward from their awful past if they are together? Or will the reminders of what they lived through while others weren't so lucky tear them apart? Excellent writing and storytelling along with a couple you want to see have an HEA more than anything, are what make this book totally worth the read.

Liv Arias never thought she would make the trip back to the place that holds so many painful memories for her, but here she is facing that past, and the man who broke her heart into a million pieces. As much as she wants to hate him for breaking her heart, she just can't seem to muster any distaste when he is sitting in front of her telling her how sorry he is for the night he walked away from her and put her in danger. The next thing she knows she is closing the distance between them and putting her lips on his, and the moment they meet the sparks start to fly all over again. When she agreed to do the documentary and return to her old high school she never thought she'd run into Finn again, but now that she has she is so sure she can walk away from him again... Letting Liv go was the hardest thing that Finn Dorsey has ever done, their time together back in high school meant so much to him, and the thought that he was the one who put her in danger on that fateful night damn near kills him every time he thinks about it. Through the years he has often wandered if she followed her dreams of being a famed photographer, if she is still has feisty and daring as she use to be, and if the sparks they once shared would still be there if he had the chance to kiss her once more. Returning to his hometown has him on pins and needles, the idea of being so close to the place that changed his life all those years ago is almost more than he can bare... then he sees Liv again and all that doesn't seem to matter as much. His plan was to return home, face his past, and find a way to finally put it all behind him... he never expected it would also reunite him with the woman who has held his heart all these years. The Ones Who Got Away is a heart-wrenching and riveting read that is sure to keep you under it's spell from start to finish! From the moment your eyes land on the page it will start toying with your emotions and have your heart in your throat, but little by little it begins to take on more of an uplifting that will leave you smiling. Watching these two wonderfully crafted characters reunite, find a way to deal with all their unresolved feelings and fears, and get to a place of love was truly a beautiful and touching thing to witness. I have to say this is by far one of the best first reads that I have had in a long while, Ms. Loren's thought provoking story line gave me the feels, squeezed my heart, and moved me beyond words... it's definitely one I will treasure for a while! Highly recommend this one... it's just too damn good to pass up!! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.

This is the kind of story that grabs you from the first chapter and holds on to you. The details pour out around the here and now. And what a here and now it is. Liv survived and she's back for an interview for a documentary. A school shooting. A nightmare. She survived but her dreams have died. She exists. And as she comes together with all the others that got away, she discovers she's not the only one. And Finn may be the worst for wear. His demons go deep. Needless to say, these characters were real and I loved them all. I wanted so much for only good things for them. I think a story of how the survivors fair after a major shooting is, unfortunately, such a relevant and poignant topic. This one definitely had my emotions all tied up. There just wasn't a clear path to recovery for any of them. I was just hanging on and hoping for them. And at one point, I was so very proud of Liv. I cheered and was so happy. The writing is great. I wanted to devour it from start to finish and it was only my life getting in the way that stopped that. It's a great way to start this new year. There is hope. Dreams can still happen. If you enjoy a survivor story with lots of sexual tension, then you should definitely give this one a go. Go on, add it to your TBR list. You won't regret it.

Twelve years ago, tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a small number of students survived, a group the media dubbed as The Ones Who Got Away. Now, web designer Liv Arias, along with the rest of the survivors, have returned to the small Texas town to tell their stories for a documentary. Which means Liv seeing former star-athlete and old flame Finn Dorsey. A lot happened between them that night and Liv is ready to end their decade-long riff and move on. But when her attempt at closure turns into a steamy kiss, moving on proves much more difficult than either of them thought... Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package. The smooth face was now dusted with scruff, and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence. A thousand things were in those eyes. A thousand things welled up in Liv. My Thoughts When the tragic Long Acre High School Senior Prom scenario took place the survivors only thought they had gotten away. Little did anyone realize twelve years later their lives would still be so deeply impacted by the events of that night. Having them return to the small Texas town to tell their stories for a filmed documentary was never something the surviving group of now grown men and women had most likely ever planned on. Like the rest of the group Liv Arias had built her life suppressing those memories so returning to Long Acre opened up old wounds but also opened her eyes to possibilities she had long given up on. This is a story of healing, a story of taking back ones inner self, of following dreams that had died along with classmates and at its heart a second chance at a love that never died. Finn Dorsey and Liv Arias share mental demons from their past trauma which not only is explored in a way that breaks the readers heart on their account but also shows that the human spirit can find a way to overcome even its darkest hour with the right motivation to do so. I almost did not take the opportunity to read this book by an author unknown to me because of it’s possible negative emotional impact. How glad I am now that chance came my way via Netgalley and publisher Sourcebooks Casablanca. I thank them both and thank the author for sharing what is not only a well written book about a very real ongoing problem but a wonderful love story also. The love story is not just focused on Finn and Liv however but on them reconnecting with family and former friends too. [EArc from Netgalley]

Wow, this book. I have to say that the subject matter of this book scared me a little bit. I have seen too many shootings in the news and cried at the loss of innocent lives. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it in a book. But there are survivors and their stories deserved to be told. How does their life go on? What path did they go down as a result of that day? This book was well written and so heartfelt. My heart broke for those involved in the tragedy and the paths that it led people down. Liv and Finn were different people in high school and one tragic night changed everything for them. This story is about surviving the unthinkable and making something of your life. Living your life to the fullest to honor those that can't. Finn and Liv's story touched me on such a deep level. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. I know each story will gut me in a different way. Great read!

**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title in exchange for an honest review** This was a second chance romance that came recommended to me by one of my good friends. I had never read a Roni Loren book, but I'm glad I took a chance on this, as I really enjoyed it and I can assure that this will not be my last book by this author. Liv Arias and her classmates her senior year in high school went through a devastating ordeal that no one should ever have to deal with. Fellow students opened fire during the prom killing many people and for those that did survive, their lives were forever changed. It has been twelve years and while Liv is now working as a website designer, she has returned back to her hometown of Long Acre to revisit what happened on that fateful night. She's looking to possibly gain some additional closure, but what she doesn't realize is she might be reopening the biggest wound that has never healed. Finn Dorsey was the big man on campus back in high school and he was also labeled a hero the night of the shooting when he took a bullet for his date. What most don't know is that he also carries an enormous amount of guilt due to the fact that someone else he was very close to, Liv, endured more that night than she should have because of his actions. Finn and Liv have not been in contact in the years since the ordeal, but there are many unresolved feelings. When a kiss happens between the two of them, it reignites the passion that has been lying dormant for so many years. Will these two be able to put the past behind them and start anew? Or will the paths their lives have taken since high school cause them to once again have to walk away from what could be between them? While this was a story about second chance romance, it was so much more for me. It was about discovering who you really are and how the path you thought you were supposed to take isn't necessarily where you are meant to end up. I loved the connection between Finn and Liv and their chemistry was undeniable. The story was well written and it was both emotional and heartbreaking as well as sexy. I enjoyed it from the moment I started reading and I am looking forward to the next book in this series!
