This is the third edition of an award-winning book on the history of blacks in nursing, written by a black nursing scholar who has held key editorial positions with several distinguished nursing journals. Previous focus on the U.S. was expanded with this edition to include chapters on the Caribbean and Africa. The purpose is to redress the near absence of information in the history of nursing on the role blacks have played in the development of the profession. The author specifically denies an interpretive intent, but has gathered previously dispersed information into a single text. Topics include black nurses' roles in wars, in the development of nursing education programs, special educational programs, professional organizations, and in the federal government over a 150-year time period. One chapter consists of biographical sketches of black pioneers in nursing. History of nursing students, faculty, and researchers will benefit from the wealth of information contained in this book, as will scholars in other disciplines such as women's studies and history. Black nurses looking for role models of leadership and achievement can turn to this text for solid examples. The book contains many photographs of black leaders in nursing. Appendixes list the names and locations of black nurses who were founding members of various organizations, recipients of national awards, deans and directors of nursing education programs. There is also a useful chronology of events. Although there is heavy reliance on secondary sources, the author is a recognized scholar who has also lived some of the history she documents. The information is extremely important in overcoming silence in the literature onthe contribution of blacks to nursing.
