2 Stars Review by Elizabeth Late Night Reviewer Up All Night w/ Books Blog Typically, this type of story hooks me from the beginning but I found myself struggling to make it through The Perfect Catch. For some reason, I could not connect with the characters and it made that much harder to read. It felt like the chemistry between Calvin and Josie was forced and that was also a turnoff. When we meet Josie and Calvin they are each running from something. Josie is running from a mistake she made while living in Florida and Calvin is hiding out due to his failing baseball career. The plot was good up until a certain point and then it felt rushed. I tried to get into The Perfect Catch and powered through so I could write an educated review but it did not change my initial view. I encourage you to read other reviews as well before making a final decision.

Two people with doubtful futures explosively combine, each knowing it can only be for two weeks at most. I was so engrossed in the story and in how Josie and Cal would be able to resolve their individual dilemmas while maintaining a relationship that quickly goes from beyond the two week limit. It is a very entertaining and fun novel with the right amount of tension. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Can she keep her secrets, her low profile, and her heart too? This was a quick read but there was a lot of story packed in the 12ish chapters. I thought the author did a great job in building characters I wanted to read about in a book with a straight-forward and predictable plot. She’s also nicely set up further books with the introduction to one of Cal’s siblings. I look forward to reading more from this author. I highly recommend. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book

Calvin has returned to Last Stand, Texas after being released from his pro baseball team, when he finds his mom has hired a caretaker, Josie. Josie has taken on this job, to start a fresh and put her past behind her. Calvin is just waiting for the next phone call, hoping another team will pick him up. Soon they can't deny the chemistry that they share but will Josie's past hinder them from moving forward. A quick read that I really enjoyed. Great characters. I love the farm. A great start to new series, what's better than baseball, but baseball and romance! I recommend this book.

Josie's been burned by a con man, and she might be on the lam, so keeping her past close to the vest and guarding her heart is her best defense. But, one look at the smooth baseball player, Calvin, makes it hard. Being the caretaker of his mother's farm and friend to his grandfather won't make things easy, especially when he starts helping around the properties. Calvin was let go from his team, it smarts, but he's not done with the game. Laying low in his hometown was the plan till he found out his mother left the farm in the care of a woman with a secretive past. As they make peace and spend time together, there's a spark of passion. Neither is ready for commitment, but when things are just falling into place, each has things from the past come out in a very public way. Is it too late for them to find their way back together? Enjoyed and recommend this story! **received an ARC from netgalley

I want to believe in love at first sight but this story still seems like it went way too fast. The whole book they deny their attraction to each other. Neither wants to talk about their past or what they are running from. They finally take the plunge and sleep together. The next day a huge mess breaks out, within an hour they are fixed and madly in love to live with each other for all time. And all this happens in less than a week. The book just didn't seem plausible. *I received a free copy of this book via the NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.*

4 1/2 STARS! A hunky ballplayer, family drama galore and lots of sassy banter! With the first book in her new Texas Playmakers series, Joanne Rock brings a baseball dynasty to life with the backdrop of a good-hearted Texas family. Cal is the son of a retired star pitcher and his brothers are in the game as well, so to hear the news that he might be disgracing the family name by being cut from his team is life-changing to him. The setting of the story is really interesting and the characters hooked me quickly. The ending was a bit abrupt and left me hanging a little bit, but overall I loved the story and look forward to hearing his brother's stories! When professional baseball player Calvin Ramsey learns that he has been cut from the team, he's thrown into a tailspin. Baseball is all he's ever known, and he's not sure what to do with himself if his career is really over. For now, he's going to head home to Last Stand, Texas to see his family and let the realness of working on the farm ground him a little bit. Josie Vance fled embarrassment and despair in Florida to take this temporary caretaker job in Texas. She doesn't know what to think when her boss's son shows up in the middle of the night thinking he's coming home to Mama. The last thing she needs is another handsome man finagling his way into her heart ... the last one that did that ended up stealing her life savings and sending her life into chaos. No thank you ... she'll just steer clear of this hunky cowboy ... if only he wasn't so tempting!

The Perfect Catch is by Joanne Rock. It’s a short read, easily read in one afternoon, with a sexy baseball player unsure of what his future holds and a determined woman who just needs a place to let her wounds heal a bit! Calvin Ramsey thought he had the world on a string. He is a professional baseball player in the major leagues. But everything changes when he goes in to practice one day and is told he is being let off the team. The only place that sounds good to Calvin to be is home. To enjoy the peace and quiet of his boyhood home until he figures out what to do next. So he heads back to Last Stand, Texas. Calvin’s mom is away on a trip and has hired a woman to take care of her home, her dogs, and her bee hives. That woman is Josie Vance. Josie has spent most of her life trying to run her mother’s apartment building, with no help at all from her mother. She has been forced to repair things with spit and duct tape. Josie was lonely and fell easy prey to a swindler. She lost her entire life’s savings. After a heated argument with her mother over her job, it’s time for Josie to make a change. When she heard about the caretaker’s position in Texas, she thought it would be the perfect way to figure out her future, until a certain sexy baseball player came into the picture. “Of all the women he could have chosen, why was he so taken with a mystery woman who’d made it clear she didn’t want to get to know him better?” Cal and Josie try to keep the attraction between them under wraps. But it’s too strong. And you know that the minute they give in to what they are feeling, their pasts are going to come back to haunt them. As I said, this was pretty short. Josie had been badly hurt so it was hard to trust. And Cal loved the game of baseball and hadn’t given up on returning to his career. So no matter what their time together had an expiration date. I really liked Josie and her determination to do well at no matter what she attempted. I liked Cal okay but disliked the way he jumped so soon to a conclusion when he should have just waited. The story did just sort of seem to end. I would have liked a further glimpse into the future to see how things turn out for these two. If you know me, then you know that things like that bug me and I will probably be thinking about it for days. All in all, it was a sweet story of two people who had been beat down in the past and given a second chance at happiness. All they had to do was to be brave enough to take it.

You can never go wrong when you pick up a book by this talented author, and this one proves the point. This one centers around Calvin Ramsey and Josie Vance. Cal/Calvin is a well known baseball player who never expected to be let go from his team. Baseball is his life and with his future uncertain, he decides to go to his mother’s farm. Josie is a young woman who has left her life in Florida and is in hiding working as a caretaker at Cal’s mother’s farm. The attraction is there , but both have their issues and try to keep their distance. As they try to deal with their lives , a friendship develops. But the road will be rocky and gets worse when secrets are exposed. It’s a story about family dynamics. On how parents can make or break the lives of the children, no matter their age. It’s a story about heartbreaks, but also hope , and maybe love. Another touching and well written story by this author. I am looking forward to future books in this series. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley . The opinions expressed are solely my own.
