Eugene Field was born in St Louis Missouri on September 2, 1850. At age 6 Eugene’s mother died and he was raised by his cousin Mary field French in Amherst, Massachusetts. His Father continued to practice law – famously pleading the case of Dred Scott, the slave who sued for his freedom. In 1875 he set to work as a journalist for the St. Joseph Gazette in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Later that year he married Julia Comstock, with whom he went on to have eight children.
