Reverend Phillips went West to research Native American spirituality sure that his religion was true. He also thought that his Ivy League credentials would gain him acceptance by settlers and Indians. Reverend Phillips was wrong on both assumptions. Unfortunately, he realized his errors after being taken captive by the Shoshone. He was a coward who found it out too late.
