Overview

Rugged rancher Jake McGregor wrangles cattle better than kids, but when he's suddenly saddled with three grieving children, he's determined to step up. His sister's kids shouldn't pay for her error in judgment in naming him guardian. Problem is, he doesn't have a clue what he's doing. And the woman who attempts to help with his every fumble is the one woman he wants to steer clear of...

Lacey Anderson loves a challenge, but Jake's already broken her heart once. When his tall shadow darkens the doorway of her classroom, she's ready to shut him out – until she meets her new students, and sees the desperation in Jake's eyes. Emotional intelligence is so not his forte. But she's done banging her head against that wall.

Jake, however, is finally ready to learn how to love and Lacey's the teacher he wants. Is she willing to risk her own heart again to teach him?

4.5 Stars I cannot begin to express how much I loved Paula Altenburg’s The Rancher Takes a Family. This is truly a second chance romance full of heart. Jake McGregor finds himself the guardian of his two nephews and niece; ten-year-old Mac, five-year-old Finn and infant Lydia, after his sister, brother-in-law, and parents are killed in a plane crash. To say everyone is grieving would be an understatement. For the kids, the situation is worse because they are moved away from everything they know in New York City to Grand, Montana. Jake isn’t sure why his sister Elizabeth selected him to be their guardian. It’s not like he has any experience with kids. But luckily for him, his two younger brothers Luke and Zack agree to move back to Montana to help out for awhile. Lacey Anderson is an elementary school teacher. She’s also Jake’s ex-high school girlfriend and the woman who broke his heart. When Lacey sees Jake and the boys struggling across the playground, she can’t resist trying to help out. What starts out as a little help and encouragement blossoms into more when Jake and Lacey realize they still are attracted to and have feelings for each other. Paula Altenburg has written amazing characters. Luke and Zack put their lives on hold to move back to Montana and help out. You get a glimpse into the men they are. You also get introduced to their future heroines. Mac and Finn will break your heart. You see them struggling with their new reality, but also see them adjust. I don't think Paula has ever written a New Adult book, but I have already begged her to write a story for Mac. The Rancher Takes a Family was deeper than I expected. It’s filled with so much love for family. If this story doesn’t make you cry, it will definitely tug at your heartstrings. I'm looking forward to seeing what Paula has in store for the next Montana McGregor Brothers book. **Received a copy of the book from the author and voluntarily reviewed.**

The Rancher Takes a Family is book number one in the Montana McGregor Brothers series by Paula Altenburg. This is Jake McGregor and Lacey Anderson’s story. Jake finds himself the guardian of his sister’s three children. Lacey who Jake used to date is the children’s school teacher. This is a heartwarming and second chance romance.

Altenburg delivers a sweet second chance romance about an unprepared guy who steps up to take care of his orphaned niece and nephews. And it is absolutely adorable how these big strong guys are responsible for the oh-so-cute kids. They each have a connection with a different kid and it wonderfully sets up future stories. Even better it’s done with just the lightest amount of drama – all three guys are opinionated, but they handle any disagreements pretty well. There’s also only a little drama on the romance side of things. Jake and Lacey had a high school relationship but thanks to some miscommunication and assumptions it ended with hurt feelings. Now, years later, they are thrown back together again thru the kids. And I am so happy that Altenburg made it so the relationship was about the couple and not some desperate need for a surrogate mom. Instead Jake is just taking advantage of the situation to reconnect with Lacey and give a relationship as adults a chance. The relationship portion flows pretty easily and the story is as much about the new family dynamic. You’ll totally go “awww” over these kids and how the men work to make the adjustment to their new situation as easy as possible. They do the best they can to help the kids, as they all are having to get used to their loss and the new normal of their lives. I’m very much looking forward to the next brother’s story so I can spend time with this group again. **Review given honestly and freely after receipt of a reader copy. This opinion is completely my own and was not influenced in any way.**

This was a different sort of a read but one had me in tears in parts. Can you imagine losing you mom, dad sister and brother in law and then find out you are the guardian to their 3 young children? Well that's what happened to Make and what this book is about. Jake and 2 of his brothers bring the 3 children home from New York to Wagging Tongue Montana to their dairy farm. Yes there is a romance in this book...in fact a very good, second chance romance. I love the fact that there are several ideas going on at the same time in this book and it flows right nicely. I look forward to reading the other brother's stories in upcoming books.

Jake McGregor, rancher, is left his sister three small children when she and her parents are killed in an airplane crash. Not only is Jake devastated by the loss of his own parents, sister and her husband but now he must become guardian to three children who lost their parents and grandparents. Ranching is a tough life, but he is up to the challenge. His two brothers also come home to the ranch and help him. Lacey Anderson was not expecting Jake, the man that broke her heart, to come to her school with children in tow. But she can’t help that her heart goes out for Jake and the children now in his charge. Sparks fly and emotions go into over drive when you delve into The Rancher Takes a Family. It is a tender, heartfelt storytelling. I really loved that Jake with some help from his siblings, was able to handle the children on his own. So when he pursues Lacey, although assisted with her child knowledge, Jake was there because he wanted to make her a part of his life and not looking for someone to take over the child rearing responsibility...Swoon worthy. The Rancher Takes a Family is one of those feel good romances with a cast of characters that will make you smile, out right laugh out loud and even feel your heart expand to encompass their plight. I received this ARC copy of The Rancher Takes a Family from Tule Publishing. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Oh my, loved this book!! After the first few pages I knew I would love Jake. Jake was content in his life as a rancher but things changed when he now has his nephews and niece after his sister dies. His other two single brothers move in to help with ranch and the kids. Lacey is the school teacher for the kids, plus Jake's high school girlfriend. They both made mistakes in the past and now Jake wants to start fresh. Loved these characters, many laugh out moments with the kids. Great chemistry between Jake and Lacey. This is a book that I could not put down!! Can't wait to read about the other two brothers!!

A truly enjoyable second chance romance for Jake McGregor and Lacey Anderson, former high school sweethearts. Jake has more problems than he can handle, but he has no choice but to step up and take care of his sister’s three children. Tragically, his sister and her husband along with Jake’s parents were killed in a plane crash and Jake is now the children’s guardian. He brings the children to their ranch where he will have help from his two brothers, Luke and Zack. The children, although traumatized by the death of their parents, are precious and add so many touching moments to this story. Jake reconnects with Lacey when he realizes that she is now teaching at the elementary school. Lacey is aware of Jake’s responsibilities and is willing to help Jake with the children and help the children adapt to their new situation. It was impressive the way the three brothers came together, putting aside their own grief at the loss of their parents and sister, for the benefit of the children. I really enjoyed this romance, the up and down emotions and growth of the characters as they adjust to their new normal. I look forward to the next book in this series. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Loved this book! Jake was an amazing character and I loved the way he stepped up to care for his niece and nephews. What comes out of a tragedy is a second chance with the girl of his dreams. Lacy and Jake both made mistakes when they were younger but that spark between them has never died and what they could have now is more than either has ever dreamed. This is a great read with some amazing characters. Looking forward to the next book in the series. I definitely recommend this one.

Loved this book! This novel drew me in from the very beginning with Jake, the bachelor rancher, trying to wrangle his sister's three young children on a plane... but some wrangling is beyond even the most experienced rancher. Once he finally gets them home, he has no idea what to do with them or how to help them with the loss of their mother. When Jake brings the two boys to school, he sees Lacey, the girl that got away. They both hurt each other badly when they were teens, but Lacey won't let that stop her from helping her help his new charges. While many years have passes, their attraction to each other is still just as strong as it was when they were teens. This is a wonderful tale of second chance love that fans of the genre will love. The author has created characters with depth that makes them feel real and come alive on the page. This one is a must read, so put it at the top of your TBR list. The author is on my must read authors' list.
