Overview

Sometimes the only place left to go is home.

Kara Martinson always thought her high school crush was out of her league, but they did share one night she's never been able to forget. Nearly three decades after being disowned by her parents and forced to raise her son on her own, Kara's made it—her art is being toasted at a gallery opening. Even better, she and her son are finally on stable ground. Until Mr. One-Night Stand himself crashes her party.

Harry Canton always knew Kara would make it as an artist. Almost thirty years after high school, he still considers her the one that got away. But the surprise reunion doesn't quite go to plan when Harry discovers he left her with more than just memories when he went away to college. Desperate to connect with the family he never knew existed, Harry convinces his son to move cross country for a fresh start with his father—and pleads with Kara to come home, too.

Kara hasn't stepped foot in their hometown since the day she was sent away. But her son desperately wants the father he never had and denying him that may cost her everything. Can love heal old heartaches so Harry and Kara can have a second chance at the future they were robbed of so long ago? Or will the pain of the past be too much to face?

About the Author

As a teen, Marci Bolden skipped over young adult books and jumped right into reading romance novels. She never left. Marci lives in the Midwest with her husband, kiddos, and numerous rescue pets. If she had an ounce of willpower, Marci would embrace healthy living, but until cupcakes and wine are no longer available at the local market, she will appease her guilt by reading self-help books and promising to join a gym “soon.”

Almost 30 years ago, dorky Harry Canton left artsy Kara Martinson after one night of fumbling sex. Twenty-seven years later, he shows up at her art show and discovers he has both a son and a young granddaughter with Down’s Syndrome. Bolden, in the first book of her Stonehill Series, has written an emotionally-wrenching story of betrayal, forgiveness, and a love that can’t be denied. Kara, after a lifetime of running from commitment and the fear of abandonment, has to find the strength to face the past and forgive not just her parents, but herself so that she can embrace the future. It is impossible to read Bolden’s depiction of the incredible damage that parents can do when they put their own selfish needs ahead of their children’s without wanting to crawl into the pages and throttle them. Regrettably, this second-chance romance relies on too many plot devices that stretch plausibility. Kara never outgrows her penchant for running away, Harry pushes too hard and fast for a commitment, son Phil instantly embraces a relationship with Harry and freely criticizes Kara for his nomadic upbringing, and Harry’s mother and Kara’s father refuse to take full responsibility for their cruelty towards their children. As a result, the book is frustrating and somewhat underwhelming. Not the best of the genre, but it will find its audience. I received a complimentary ARC of this book from Pink Sand Press through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

So much emotion. I held my breath, cried, cheered and gasp. It had so many feels. It was interesting and pulled you in made you part of the story. Things weren't perfect, their was misunderstandings, hurt, bridges crossed, mended and rebroken. The storyline was great. The characters and side characters made this book so wonderful to read. I recommend it to all it is worth the read. I received it from booksprout and this is my voluntary review.

5 Stars! A debut novel that has an absolutely heart wrenching story! At their high school graduation, Kara and Harry act on the attraction between them. When Kara finds out she`s pregnant, her parents kick her out and tell her that she`s not to come back. So when she goes to Harry`s house, she finds out he left for college ... but Harry`s mom sends to to a place for unwed mothers and tells her that when Harry is done school, he`ll come for her. After waiting 5 years, Kara realizes that Harry is not coming for them. Over 20 years later, Kara is having a gallery opening and who walks in ... Harry. When Harry finds out he has a son and granddaughter, he wants all 3 of them to move back home with him. Will Phil finally have the father he always wanted? Will Kara stop running and face her fears? Will Harry have the family he has always dreamed of? This story is so different and I just loved it! First of all, it's about an older couple with a second chance. And then the couple's son Phil and granddaughter Jessica play a big part in the book ... it's about the whole family dynamic. My heart just broke for the teenage Kara and all the heartache she went through just to live day to day. At first I wanted to kick her son in the a$$ ... he was so mean to her, but he redeemed himself when he finally came around and realized that it wasn't just all about him and that all the bad things actually happened to his mother. I felt sorry for Harry because all he wanted was a family of his own and it was his own mother that stole that from him. I highly recommend this book, but make sure you have a box of tissues beside you ... cause you'll need them! I received an early copy courtesy of Pink Sand Press through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

This has so many feels I don't know which one took over the most. This is a story about forgiveness, for others and for yourself. It's a story about bravery and survival and moving forward; but not before letting the past go. I am so glad it didn't take long for Harry to meet Phil and know about him and Jess. The characters were so well developed and you could feel every emotion. I laughed, I cried, I even got hot and bothered, and I felt the love. This was such a great story and now I am hooked on this author. I only wish there would have been an epilogue to see how the rest of their futures turned out. This was my first book by this author but definitely not the last! Kara and Harry had a one-night stand and when Harry left for college Kara was left with more than just memories. When she went to Harry's mom she was turned away and ended up across the country and now almost 3o years later Harry has discovered he is a father of a grown son. Kara is an accomplished artist and has raised their son, Phil, who is also a father of a 7-year-old daughter, and when Harry shows up and wants to get to know his son and get re-acquainted with "the one who got away" he convinces Phil to move and wants Kara to "come home." This is a beautifully written story full of healing and heart. Don't miss this one! **Received this ARC for review from the publisher via NetGalley**

Harry and Kara will have you in an emotional twist with their story. Their one night stand ended with both going separate ways but for Kara she was given a parting gift that had her parents disowning her. Now it's almost thirty years since they have seen each other. Kara has come into her own with her art and her son is a grown man with a daughter of his own. Will her meeting with Harry be a second chance to get it right and have a happily ever after. The Road Leads Back is a story of healing, forgiveness and reconnection. This was my first Marci Bolden book, but I enjoyed it very much. When one passionate encounter on graduation night left Kara pregnant and disowned by her parents, she turns to Elaine, the mother of the boy she slept with, only to be left heartbroken when she's sent away to a place all the way across the country. Twenty-seven years later, Kara comes face to face with Harry, the father of her child, and they quickly discover that he was deceived by his mother, who never told him of the son that Kara had carried and delivered. Harry is not only reunited with Kara, but also with Phil, his son, and his granddaughter Jessica. As they all work to connect, they go through highs and lows, they encounter challenges and are left to deal with the deception and rejection of their parents. Harry and Kara also try to see if the relationship they never got to experience back in high school might be in the cards for them now. This is a heartfelt book that shows how hasty decisions and words said in anger can change the course of everyone's life forever. I found these characters easy to root for as you know that everything they are feeling is warranted based on the circumstances they've had to overcome. In the end though, the most important thing is realizing that life is short and time is fleeting and you have to open your heart to those you love even if it is the hardest and most uncomfortable thing to do. In the end, it's all worth it.

Loved this emotional, heartwarming, engaging and relatable second chance romance filled with longing, regret, family dram, forgiveness and passion.... This is a thrilling and sweetly sexy romance filled with witty banter, lovable charters and life altering, regrettable miscalculations. Loved this journey and looking forward to more from this series.
