The Runaway Friend written bvy Kathleen Ernst is an American Girl mystery book about a young pioneer girl growing up on the American Frontier wth her family form Sweden; Kirsten Larson. Growing up on the frontier requires much farmwork and sometimes, the farmwork needs animals like oxen to get it done. That's what Kirsten's family has recently bought, oxen to help plow the soil, so the work could be much easier. However, one day, the Larson family's oxen is taken away from them, because they can't pay back the money. The reason for this, is because one of Kirsten's friends, Erik was to pay the family back money he owes to them, but Erik goes missing. Kristen's relatives think Erik ran away because he couldn't pay back the money. They find Erik selfish for doing this, but Kirsten doesn't think that's the reason. Kirsten knows Erik would never do such a thing, so she sets out to investigate. She figures there must be a good reason why Erik has left. She searches through his cabin, and finds some confusing clues. Each clue seems to bring up more questions to Kirsten's mind. Slowly, though, she is beginning to find more answers, too. No matter what, Kirsten is determined to help her friend, Erik, and to prove that he wasn't running away for his own selfishness. I think this mystery proves the strength of friendship and caring for others, and not just mystery, which is why I think it does deserve five stars. It can prove easily to anyone who reads it how important friendship and to care for others, other than just yourself and to provide a good read. I would definitely recommend this book to any girl who's got a heart for caring, and a love for American Girl and the Kirsten Larson historical character. This is also for any girl who loves American history and would like to know more about the time of the pioneers in America. I Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did-maybe even more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Runaway Friend - A Kirsten Mystery - American Girl by Kathleen Ernst has a great storyline with well-developed characters. There are plenty of twists & turns in this novel to capture your attention and keep you intrigued. Things are not as they appear to be and some assumptions made about key characters are found to be incorrect. You'll be surprised by the truth. *This is an enjoyable novel for leisure reading. **The other American Girl mysteries are worth reading, you will probably enjoy them.
