Overview

In Egypt’s Western Desert lies the tomb of an unnamed pharaoh that hides a secret so powerful, it could destroy the world as we know it.

Archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor has made a career of finding legends the world has all but forgotten. Though there’s one in particular that has fascinated him for years—the Emerald Tablets. Myth says that they possess the knowledge of the universe, allowing humankind to traverse Heaven and Earth, and have the power to bestow wealth and wisdom upon whoever possesses them. But if they fall into evil hands, it could cause a global disaster.

So when a former colleague stumbles across an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic map that promises to lead to a pharaoh’s tomb and the Emerald Tablets, there’s no way he’s turning down her invitation to join the dig. He only has one stipulation: his best friends Robyn Garcia and Cal Myers come with him.

The road ahead isn’t going to be an easy one, and their shared dream of recovering the Emerald Tablets is being crushed at every turn. And just when they think it’s all over, they learn there are a few clues they have overlooked. But they’re no longer the only ones searching for the Tablets. Now, the fate of the world hangs in the balance, and soon they’ll find out that when it comes to hunting legends, they can’t trust anyone.

Reviewed by Eeva Lancaster for Readers' Favorite In Carolyn Arnold's The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, Matthew Connor is once again called upon to unearth a legend. A map possibly pointing the way to the mythical Emerald Tablets is discovered by a colleague in Egypt, along with the tomb of an unknown pharaoh, and Matthew is being invited to the dig site. He has been fascinated with the Emerald Tablets for years, and the opportunity is too good to resist. He convinces his friends, Cal and Robyn, to leave their current commitments and go with him on another adventure. The archaeologists are aware of the danger in case the Emerald Tablets are found. Soon enough, they find themselves in sticky situations, not knowing who to trust. With the promise of ultimate knowledge and unspeakable wealth, everyone wants to get their hands on the tablets. It's just a matter of who's going to find it first. Matthew is determined to be that person. But first, they must survive. This is one of the most entertaining archaeological thrillers I've had the pleasure of reading. Right from the start, it gripped me and forced me to turn the pages as the author laid out the plot. I love ancient legends and Egyptology, and these are some of the things that prompted me to read this book. I'm glad I did. For four days I looked forward to the end of the day so I could go back and join the characters as they uncovered one clue after another, bringing them closer to the identity of the pharaoh and the Emerald Tablets. The background given on the various Egyptian legends and customs mentioned in the book satisfied the geek in me. The author made it real in my mind and strengthened my resolve to visit this country one day and see the historical sites myself. The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is a polished, well-written, stand-alone novel that Indiana Jones fans will love. Carolyn Arnold has written a real page-turner, rich in history without being overly detailed, with a smattering of romance and suspense that will engage the reader from start to finish. The ending was bittersweet. Now, I'm off to read more of Matthew Connnor's adventures. I'm glad to give this book 5 well-deserved stars.

Another exciting adventure with our intrepid explorers who are desperate to find the Emerald tablets. According to legend these tablets hold untold powers and in the wrong hands could lead to world devastation. The story line and brilliant descriptive writing brings the ancient world of Egypt to life. Egypt holds a fascination for the modern world and all the secrets and myths it holds and this is a novel which takes us on that journey to solve one of them. On previous expeditions our group had to overcome personnel issues and put aside grievances to work together to achieve the overall goal. Their characters and their traits are expertly brought to life and with the past tensions on the previous expeditions, it adds emotions of love, jealousy and greed to the story. Any reader who enjoys adventure stories which are full of excitement, danger, with a hint of a love triangle, will love this novel. In creating our explorer of ancient antiquities in Matthew Connor she has set a great rival for Indiana Jones. Look out for other novels by this author!

After reading City of Gold, I anxiously awaited the release of book 2 in the series. I was delighted when the opportunity to read The Secret Of The Lost Pharaoh came about. It was worth the wait! Matthew Connor has the ability to come off as a spoiled jerk but there is something very endearing about his as well. I love his sense of adventure. What I love most, is that this book starts off featuring Alex as the lead character and then brings Matthew in, along with his best friends Cal and Robyn. I love the fact that Alex didn't hold back calling someone she felt would be as excited as her to reveal The Emerald Tablets. There is a TON of action and adventure in this book. It starts practically from the beginning and carries through til the end. There are twists, turns and plot twists that you won't see coming. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end! Carolyn Arnold really does her research before writing a story and it comes across so well! I love her style of writing and the fact that each book draws you in as if you were watching a movie. Or part of the book! If this was a movie series, I'd be the first in line to buy my ticket!!!

This book has it all... action, adventure, Egyptian mysteries, romance, betrayal, death and treasure hunting! Can it get any better than that? Matthew and his friends have had a quiet time since their last adventure, and Matthew is itching for an adventure. When an old friend contacts him about the Emerald Tablets, which are basically his Holy Grail, he jumps at the chance and tries to convince his friends to join his team. As always, Matthew and friends go on one of the world's most amazing adventures. But can they survive the Pharoah's Curse or will this be the last expedition for them? I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

As a huge fan of Indiana Jones, I found The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh a real treat to read. Carolyn Arnold’s hero, Matthew Connor is as dashing, intelligent and romantically confused as Indiana Jones always seems to be. This is the second in the Matthew Connor series and I hadn’t read the first book City of Gold, but it didn’t matter. The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh works perfectly well as a stand alone story. The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh combines adventure, Egyptology, suspense and romance in a very satisfying way. Matthew dashes off to Egypt at the call of a previous colleague, Alex, who claims to have found the tomb of a pharaoh in which there is a reference to the legendary Emerald Tablets which Connor has been chasing for years. He takes his friends, Cal (a photographer) and Robyn (who works in antiquities in a museum) with him. All of Arnold’s characters are well fleshed out and you really feel as if you know them by the end of the story – which I won’t reveal. Their adventures see them trapped deep below ground with snakes and when tragedy strikes one of their number, things begin to unravel. Arnold throws you into the adventure at breakneck speed but cleverly allows the psychological tension to build between the characters as the pressure of their discovery starts to weigh heavily on them all. Could it be a pharaoh’s curse? There’s plenty of detail, too, about Ancient Egypt to fascinate the reader and a romantic love triangle which sees Matthew having to choose between the beautiful Robyn, who adores him but with whom things have never worked out, or the equally beautiful Alex, whose reasons for inviting Connor on the expedition may not be as innocent as they seem. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary copy of this book. My review is freely given.

This book is INTENSE! I love jumping right into a book with a cast of characters who had me hooked from the start. The City of Gold doesn't have to be read prior to The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh; however, you will want to read it when you pick up on the chemistry between the lead characters. So onto the 2nd book here - Matthew Connor is called up by an old friend (with whom there is a bit of outstanding sexual tension) after a near-death experience. He's not one to shy away from an adventure and neither are his friends - Cal and Robyn - even if it means sacrificing what they hold near and dear.  In Matthew Connor-fashion, they jump a plan and head off on a quest to find the Emerald Tablets. This adventure is literally life or death as they encounter curses and people who are out to find the Emerald Tablets to use for evil purposes. All of the members of the team have secrets to hide - some darker than others - that threaten the discovery as well as their futures.  The history and culture of Egypt are intriguing and the mystery kept me turning pages faster and faster. Definitely a five-star read! I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

An exciting adventure that will keep you on your toes! The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is an adventurous tale that will give you some history while taking you on a brand new adventure. This story definitely held some intrigue that I had to read it to find out what was going on. I never anticipated the different twists and turns that happened throughout the story. When you think that you have figured it out, you will realize that you were wrong. There was so much intrigue, twist and turns that I didn’t want to put the book down. Carolyn Arnold really knows how to build up the suspense and keep just enough action to keep your attention up to the very last page. Carolyn Arnold has written a fantastic story with characters that are well developed and engaging. Every character has challenges that they have to work through that adds to it. Carolyn’s stories are brilliantly written, entertaining, and enthralling. This is a definite winner from this author. I can’t wait to read the next adventure that involves Matthew Connor. Carolyn Arnold does a wonderful job of weaving incredible tales of history and suspense. I know when I see her name on a book that it will be an entertaining and enjoyable that I won’t be able to put the book down. Carolyn Arnold definitely has a gift for writing exceptional stories! I have not been disappointed with a book yet! Definitely, an author that you will want to keep on the top of your go-to list. If you enjoy reading story of history and suspense, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book and the series.

Matthew Connor was just coming off of an Alaskan mountain adventure when an old friend calls and invites him on an archaeological dig in Egypt. Alex had uncovered a clue that may lead to the legendary Emerald Tablets, something she knew Matthew would be interested in. But what is her angle? Does she truly need his help, or is there an underlying reason to include him? Whatever it is, Matthew is not about to let this opportunity pass him by. I love how this author can bring stories to life. I felt like I was along for the ride. Even the danger felt real. And the mystery of ‘will they find the tablets or not’ just adds more allure to the read. The Matthew Connor Adventures send you on an adrenaline rush with no end in sight. The characters are well thought out, and the intense plot twists keep you on your toes all the way to the end.

It seems books with an Egypt locale have been dropping into my reading list and The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold is the latest one. I feel I am right there with Alex as she begins her descent… Secrets surround the Lost Pharaoh’s tomb and she is determined to protect it. What she found was so much more than she expected and she felt that Matthew Connor, her Indiana Jones, would be the perfect person to have at her side. Matthew hops on a plane out of Alaska, swings by Toronto, Canada, to pick up his posse, and it’s off to Egypt and another treasure hunting adventure. I am glad to be back with Matthew, Robyn, who works as the curator at the Royal Ontario Museum, and Cal who is a world class photographer. We will have some sexual tension and a bit of goo goo eye romance. I’m not sure what’s what and I don’t think they do either, so it should be interesting. Matthew is a bit of a dufus. Can’t see what’s right in front of him. Oh well, I think we will have plenty of time, even if it’s in future books, for him to wake up. Underground…oh man…I can handle larger spaces for a short period of time with easy exits, but being lowered into a welllike hole, a cavein, rolling down the river with tons of earth your sky, entombed snakes (yep, we have to have snakes)…They are hanging on, tamping down their fear. Could I? NOPE!!!! When they went to the airport, I thought, hmmm…something has got to happen…and it did. The twists and turns, action and adventure, mystery and suspense, kept me on my toes. I thought this would happen, then it didn’t. I thought that would happen, then it didn’t. Carolyn Arnold does a good job of leading me down a familiar path, then jerking the rug out from under me. Think it’s over, oh no, not by a long shot. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of City of Gold by Carolyn Arnold.

Carolyn Arnold has a way of weaving a mystery. The Matthew Connor series is only in its second book and I am waiting for book three. The mysteries are all unique but have that cast of characters to bind them together. I have always had a love of history. Matthew is an archaeologist who, for lack of a better term, has a reputation for being a treasure hunter.  The Secret of the Lost Pharoah takes him and his friends to Egypt. The vivid descriptions of the scenes and the way the dig is handled are so life like you feel like you are there with the crew. If history and archaeology are not your thing, there is always the mystery in the story. Add to the mystery a tension of former romance and you probably have a little bit of everything in the book. Pick up The Secret of the Lost Pharoah and discover the world of Matthew Connor. I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is every bit as good as The City of Gold. I feel like I have waited forever for the 2nd book in this adventure series--it was worth the wait and then some! Mathew Connor and friends really get into a mess this time when they agree to help a former colleague of Matthews. The Emerald Tablets have never been far from his mind since he learned about them back in college. There was no way he was going to say no to this--and convinced his friends to accompany him. Almost from the beginning of this non stop adventure it seemed like things were going wrong---and they got much worse. Who was friend--who was enemy? If they find the Lost Pharaoh--will they find the Emerald Tablets--and then what? This is still reminding me of Indiana Jones and I want to know why a movie or TV series hasn't been made yet!! On an aside--the paperback book which is the giveaway I have also read--Yikes--you will love it too!! Both of these series are MUST reads--Carolyn Arnold knows how to keep you turning the pages!! I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

I dig books about archaeology. It’s been a dream of mine to visit some of the ancient cities and pyramids that have been uncovered, and I couldn’t wait to join these character’s in their adventure. The story begins with Alex, an Egyptologist, who discovers a secret in the sand that could be the end of mankind if it falls into the wrong hands.. Mathew Connor instantly comes to mind when she realizes she needs people she can trust to help her uncover and protect it. They have worked together before and she feels she can trust him. Mathew is excited to join her and brings with him two trusted friends, Cal and Robyn, who’ve also been on expeditions with him before. The excitement of the adventure is dimmed by the reality of what they might uncover and what it might mean for mankind. But they can’t help but be thrilled as tunnels are discovered, tombs are opened, and things long lost are now found. History will be changed. Not having read the first book, City Of Gold, I still didn’t have any trouble reading this, the second book in the Mathew Connor series. The author filled me in at appropriate points about past connections and events without slowing down my reading enjoyment. But I’d still recommend reading the previous book first. You don’t want to miss the fun of discovering these characters and seeing how they came to be where they are now. I had a good feeling about this book going in. What I didn’t expect was the nail biting suspense. If it’s not tunnels collapsing, it’s flooded chambers and lethal cobras. Not to mention others who might want they uncover. I could picture this on the big screen. The darkness under the desert. The chill of opening hidden chambers. Being trapped with snakes all around you. No idea if help will come in time. Yep, it would be a great movie. Each character tells their story but you won’t get confused. I quickly came to know them and easily recognized who was narrating. Cal, especially. He’s a wise cracker and made me chuckle in between the dangerous events. And the author did it just right as it helped me to understand each character’s motivations and reactions. Led to a much deeper read for me. Mysteries, action, adventure, danger, and genuine character’s await you inside this well researched and fun book. You’ll quickly become immersed in it and reach the end feeling satisfied yet wanting more.

What I love about Carolyn’s writing – no matter it be a Madison Knight FBI procedural or a Matthew Connor adventure – is the adventure, action and suspense that comes with every page of the book. With The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, not only are we on the edge of our seat with anticipation as we join Matthew, Cal, and Robyn as they seek out out a buried, hidden treasure; we are pulled into the action and suspense of the challenges they face getting to the treasure. One cannot simply find a buried treasure without there being snakes, falls, and other hidden mysteries along the path and that’s what makes this read so exciting. In addition to the adventure itself and the challenges faced on the adventure; there is always some plot in the background that we never really pay a whole lot of attention to even though you can feel it nagging on the edge of your brain. Something felt off from the beginning but I couldn’t take the time enough to really figure it out. I just wanted to keep pushing on the adventure! Needless to say, one part of the plot was pretty easy to come by from the beginning; a second part made more sense towards the end; and frankly, the end was a jaw dropper! I was definitely knocked down by that shocker! Carolyn makes for amazing mystery reads that while you think you may have it figured out – she always throws in a kicker that leaves you shocked and awed. It’s one of my favorite things about her books. She really makes you have to think to figure it out. If you love a good mystery – a good thinker that makes you really think and piece it together – Carolyn Arnold is a must read author. I highly recommend The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh and as an added note; you don’t have to have read Matthew’s first adventure to follow this one (although you will want to go back and read just to get more adventure and learn more about my beloved pals!)

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold is the 2nd book in her Matthew Connor series. Matthew Connor, our hero, is a famed Archaeologist, whom we tend to look at like a modern day Indiana Jones. I am happy to say, that I really enjoyed The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh. This is a fun series, as Arnold takes us on an adventure to Egypt, under the dig sites, allowing us a real feel of what archaeologist do, as well as giving us excitement, danger, murder, mystery. Matthew is contacted by a former colleague Alex , an archaeologist, who had found a major discovery on a dig. She calls Matthew to help her find the Emerald Tablets, which was considered a myth. Matthew agrees to help, and brings with him his friends and partners, Robyn and Cal. Robyn is curator at a museum, and Cal is a photographer. When they meet Alex, she introduces them to her team. As the adventure begins, things go wrong, with a group of them trapped underground, but also while trying to find a way out, they come across the tomb of a pharaoh, with all the riches. They manage to be rescued, but the expedition is fraught with mishaps, curses, betrayal, distrust and murder. What follows is an exciting. action packed, edge of your seat adventure that constantly has us in suspense. Just when you think things are over and they are safe to go home; things will take a turn, with some twists along the way. Matthew begins to be concerned that finding the Emerald Tablets may not be worth allowing this powerful tool to be put in the wrong hands. What will Matthew do if he finds those tablets? To tell too much more would be major spoilers. You need to read this book to discover everything for yourself. Carolyn Arnold has written an amazing story, describing everything in detail, giving us a complete picture of Egypt dig sties, heat, desert, underground tombs, mummies, tunnels, snakes, and all kinds of long lost treasures. I loved Matthew, Alex, Robyn and Cal, and the villains in the story were very well done. I look forward to more from the Matthew Connor Adventure series. Carolyn Arnold has created another winner.

Although it gets a bit draggy here and there, it is well worth the time to read. Would make a good movie somewhat along the lines of Indiana Jones.
