Overview

The Secret Son by Joan Kilby

A birthday card out of the blue from his estranged father sends successful Seattle marketing man Alex Chernoff on a detour to Sweetheart in search of answers about his past. A day, maybe two, to tie up loose strings and he'll be out of there, heading for Mexico, margaritas and blondes in bikinis.

Emma Stanhope is all too familiar with hot, rich, entitled guys like Alex. They never hang around for long, especially not for a Plain Jane like herself. No problem. She's smart and logical, like any good scientist, and knows better than to lose her heart.

What Emma doesn't count on is chemistry--of the romantic kind. What Alex doesn't count on is meeting the girl who'll make him want to change his ways. But when he learns that he's a secret from his father's real family, he can't stay in Sweetheart... even if he wants to.

Will love be enough to convince Alex to stay... for good?

After Alex receives a birthday card from his estranged father, he ditches his plans to vacation in Mexico and instead heads to Cherry Lake. When he arrives, he finds that his father is out of town so decides to help pick cherries in the orchard. The more he is there; the more he is getting to know, and really like, his family. Problem is, they do not know about him. Emma is back in town to help with the annual cherry festival. Longtime friends with the Jackson’s, she also helps pick in the orchard. As Emma and Alex get to know each other, they realize how much they like each other. When Alex finally is able to confront Robert, his father, and is told no one knows about him, Alex is shattered. He has finally found people he can call family. Can Alex and Robert make things right between each other? Or will Alex end up leaving Cherry Lake disappointed and heartbroken? Alex and Emma have been added to my list of favorite couples! Book #2 in the Secrets of Cherry Lake is one of my favorite stories. I laughed, I cried. Such a heartwarming story and I loved every minute of it!

I liked this book and the growing Jackson family. After 15 years Alex, gets a birthday card from his dad. That starts him thinking of his absentee father and missing his mother who passed away years before. Wanting to have some questions answered Alex sets out to meet his dad, where he gets more than he can imagine. I look forward to the next book in the series. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Alex has always felt alone. His father left when he was a child and he lost his mother a year ago. He wants to understand what happened between his parents. When he receives a birthday card from his father, he's determined to get answers which is why he goes to Cherry Lake. He doesn't tell anyone there who he is. He meets Emma who loves the town and its people. She challenges Alex and awakens his desire. What happens when Alex faces the man who left him and learns that he has a new family? This is an emotional tale that is filled with both heartache and love. Alex hates his life and wants to change who he is, but his past haunts him. I liked that he shows his father compassion and love under very difficult circumstances. Emma is a caring woman who has the strength to take a chance on love. I found it very difficult to like Robert Jackson. What he did was cowardly and I couldn't respect him. I feel that Joan Kilby did an excellent job with a difficult storyline. I did enjoy The Secret Son.

They're so much honesty and warmth in this story, as well as heartache difficult family situations. My heart went out to Alex, all he really wanted was to belong, have a family and find love. He was so earnest with his desire, he was willing to compromise. The father he had admired as a young boy, turned out to be a disappointment, and selfish. I really didn't like Robert, the father. I think he was a weak coward. He rather hides and ignore his son, that owns up to his behavior, and take responsibility for his action. But the rest of the family more than made up for his behavior. I loved, absolutely adored, his sibling's reaction. And the first meeting between Alex and Nate had me in tears. Alex and Emma had a fun relationship, I thought they were a hoot together! The interaction between these two was so entertaining. The time span is short in the story, and the built up to the relationship is more detailed, than the growth of it, but they have chemistry, passion, attraction between them. They also have understanding, refreshing honesty, and support. There's also an epilogue that ties up the story between Alex and Emma, and gives more credibility to their fast growing feelings. Lovely small town, filled with interesting, deep characters, families, intriguing destinies, secrets, and love. I am already loving this series, and can't wait to read more about the family ~ Four Spoon with a teaspoon on the side

Joan Kilby did an excellent job describing the feelings of being a secret child. The spontaneous of Alex showing up in Montana from Seattle. Alex was a quick learner and was able to blend in but stick out in his surroundings, while the complexities all tied in nicely of the family finding out he was one of them. The heartache and understanding of a secret family was amazingly done. Received an ARC for an honest & fair review.

In life there are surprises around every corner. Secrets waiting to be revealed. Some good and bad. Some happy and sad. The Secret Son by Joan Kilby takes a look at hidden truths. Alex has always had unanswered questions about himself. The one person that can answer them is the father he longs to know. But finding answers opens the lid to many other unrevealed truths that may affect others. I liked this story. Ms. Kilby takes the reader through Alex's inner struggle with trying to do the right thing without hurting others. She also brings into his life Emma who is dealing with her own insecurities but serves as stabilizing force for Alex. The Secret Son is a look at how actions and secrets have ripple effects.

I loved how Emma and Alex fist lay eyes on each other in The Secret Son by Joan Kilby, and the sassiness Emma exhibits from the start! But underneath that sassiness is a caring, smart, loyal lady. This is well demonstrated as Alex and Emma run into each other again and again in small town Cherry Lake. I loved how their relationship unfolded, and Joan managed to make it seem like a natural thing in short time. Neither of them expect to find romance in Cherry Lake...but romance finds them anyway. It is a difficult one to move forward with, because the future is so uncertain. They just seem so right together that I hoped with everything else happening something positive would come of Alex's time in Cherry Lake! I really liked both of these characters and how they were together. Emma cares, and she just seems to get Alex. When she figures out the secret Alex is hiding she felt for him just as much as I did. The main plot of Alex finding his father after many years is woven nicely with the romance of Alex and Emma, and I felt that these two things gave the book a lot of strength. I really felt for Alex, he stole a piece of my heart - little boy Alex and grown up Alex. The feelings are whirling in him and he's not sure why what happened happened, or what really happened. I did like how he dealt with meeting his father and his father's family, even though it made his heart ache a little more at times. I found both of the main characters to be mature, fun, and despite some issues, full of love and hope. This is what made me like them, connect to them, and feel with them! The secondary characters in this book are mostly Alex's father's other family, and they too were amazing! They added a lot of depth and counter balance to some of what Alex was feeling. An emotional, well paced read that drew me in as quickly as I could turn the pages, I'd recommend The Secret Son to any romance reader. Although part of the Secrets of Cherry Lake series, The Secret Son can be read as a stand alone.

A great start to a a new series , Secrets of Cherry Lake. Alex receives a birthday card from his estranged father out of the blue. Alex is tired of his life style and ready to make a change. He packs up for a week to go to Cherry Lake, where the one week will change the rest of his life. What he does not expect to find is the chemistry between him and Emma, nothing like he is use to. But will it be enough to keep him in Cherry Lake, along with the secret that his dad kept for all of these years. This is book that will leave you with tears, happy tears that is. Have tissues on hand. Love the characters of Cherry Lake. Can't wait to read more of their stories. I received this book from netgalley for an honest review.

The Secret Son is a complicated story of family and life's hard choices. Alex Chernoff's only remaining family, his father left him and his mother 20 years ago. When he receives a birthday card from his father on his 30th birthday, Alex decides to look up his parent and find out why he left. He travels to Cherry Lake, Montana and meets Emma Stanhope. Alex finds out that his father is away on business for a few days, and the orchard that is a family business is in need of pickers. He decides to stay and learn about his brother and sisters. Emma, a scientist who has always lived in her sister's beauty queen shadow, blossoms as she and Alex grow closer. Eventually Alex's identity is revealed to all involved, but will he and Emma's budding romance survive? This was a fun novel set in a small town. I enjoyed reading about the cherry festival and meeting all the inhabitant of Cherry lake. I enjoyed Emma and Alex's romance and am looking forward to continuing the series. I was given a free copy for an honest review by netgalley.com.

A heartwarming small town romance. On Alex Chernoff's thirtieth birthday, he gets a card from the father he hasn't heard from in fifteen years. Alex decides to forgo his Mexican vacation to go to Cherry Lake to see his father. When he finds out his father is out of town for a medical appointment, Alex decides to stay in town and help at the orchard picking cherries until his father returns and he can talk to him. No one knows Alex is Robert Jackson's secret son. Emma Stanhope has never missed the cherry festival and is back in town for the annual event. She always helps the Jackson family at their booth at the festival. This year they are short on pickers at the orchard, so she helps there too. The Jacksons are like a second family to her. Emma doesn’t expect to see the city slicker with the fancy car who she had issues with during her drive home to be at the orchard wanting to pick cherries? Why would someone like him be working as a picker? Usually people like that move through town pretty quick. They quickly become friends and then lovers. But how will Emma react when she finds out Alex's secret? If you like small town romances and family stories, this is the book for you.
