I accepted a copy of The Sweetest Oblivion (Made #1) in exchange for an honest review.  The thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.   This is the first book I’ve read from Lori and based on how much I loved it; it won't be my last.  This is a character-driven story, which surprised me since it is set in a mafia world, I was expecting a more plot based romantic suspense, it's not.  There isn’t a lot of action or suspense, but the brilliant writing and character interaction are all that is needed.   Elena is the favored daughter of a mob boss; she has been raised to be sweet, polite and submissive.   Nicolas is the boss of the Russo family and is set to marry Elena sister since Elena has been pronounced ruined.  Yet Elena is all Nicolas really sees, and Elena is instantly attracted to Nicolas.  There was so much sexual tension and heat built up between Elena and Nicolas it was almost impossible to put the book down.  I was up reading late into the night.   “He was everything my body thought it needed and everything my brain knew it didn’t.” Elena and Nicolas’s story is tumultuous and never what I expected.  Their feelings and depth kept me wanting more and more.   “He was an infatuation, a craving, a need, and I was sure it was unrequited.” Lori’s ability to bring realism and depth to characters is phenomenal. I knew these people if felt their emotions.  And not just the two main characters, I knew the secondary characters as well.   The Sweetest Oblivion is an extraordinary story about two unlikely people falling in love in a world that love doesn’t happen.  I loved it, and I can’t wait to read more in this series.  I was sad to say goodbye to Elena and Nicolas; I didn’t want the book to end.  So, of course, this is getting no less than 5 Boundless Stars.

I can't even begin to explain how much I loved this book. Before I get into that, let me explain something. I do not like Mafia romances. They don't ring true with me. All the Mafia based romances that I have read have been unrealistic. Why unrealistic? Because most of the scenarios that were portrayed in those books wouldn't happen. I like my books a little more realistic. I don't need to read about Don's who walk away from the Mob because they fall in love. It doesn't work that way.  So back to why I loved The Sweetest Oblivion so much. It was as close to life as one could get with a book. The characters were human. While they did bad things, they weren't necessarily bad. Plus, it was dark. And you all know that the darker the romance, the more delicious it can be. And that was the case with The Sweetest Oblivion. I also connected with Elena. And let's not forget the sex!!! Totally hot and well worth the wait!! With the good, there is also the bad. I didn't like the violence in the book. There were some scenes that made me gag. I didn't like how the women were treated. I am far from a feminist but I couldn't wrap my head around being driven everywhere and having a bodyguard. I also couldn't wrap my head around why Elena was considered unfit for marriage. Why she wasn't the favorite daughter anymore. I did want to yell "We don't live in the Middle Ages anymore" at both Elena's father and Nicolas. I liked Elena. She was tough. She had to be, growing up in a family like hers. I mean, if she could eat dessert after having a man get his head blown off while holding her, nothing could faze her. Her backstory was awful (well, besides being born into a Mafia family). The guilt she had over what happened to that boy was heartbreaking. She held onto the ring he gave her like it was a lifeline. I do think that she got the better deal in Nicolas. If she had ended up with Oscar . I didn't like Nicolas during the first half of the book. He was lusting after Elena while being engaged to her younger sister. He treated her horribly the first half of the book. He was a man whore who slept with anything with a pair of tits. While he didn't exactly flaunt it, it was well-known information. But, as the book went on, he started changing. It was after he got engaged to Elena and moved her into his house, that I started liking him. The chemistry between Nicolas and Elena was insane. From the first meeting to the end of the book, they were on fire. What I liked is that the sexual tension between them didn't fall apart after they slept together the first time. Instead, it got hotter. I swear my Kindle fogged up on a few of the sex scenes. What I also liked is that the sex came later in the book. The author chose to let that sexual tension build up. Loved it!!! The end of the book was great. The author did a great job of wrapping everything up. I was happy with what happens with Nicolas and Elena. I am looking forward to book 2!!

Wow! Just, wow! This book was all kinds of amazing! Six months ago Elena’s actions had catastrophic consequences. As a result, she now must bear witness to her sister’s arranged wedding to the Russo, the head of the mafia. Nicolas Russo is a cold, cruel man and she shouldn’t be glad that it’s not her that is promised to him. Nico didn’t care which daughter he married. This was a business deal and there were no emotions involved. Unfortunately, he can’t hold to that because he definitely feels something when he sees his bride’s sister for the first time. This was such an intense read. Each page is laced with deep emotion and angst as Nico and Elena struggle against the feelings that arise when they are together. Nico is the perfect jealous possessive anti-hero that finds himself going crazy when confronted by the mere thought of Elena. Man, I love a hero that can’t help but give in to the drive to claim and protect the heroine. Elena has always been the sweet one. She lives behind fake smiles when all she wants is to be free, to be herself, to live her life. I enjoyed watching her come out from behind her façade as she spewed her opinions to Nico. Despite the threat that he could end her at any point and time, she just couldn’t help but show him the real her. Together, this couple were like a ticking time bomb. As things between them escalate to cataclysmic proportions, I waited anxiously and with great anticipation for it all to explode. The tension in the story, within each character, as well as between Nico and Elena just continued to grow. With small reprieves of some wit and humor, Ms. Lori eases the pressure before building it back up again more so than before. This is a very well written story with some amazing chemistry between the hero and heroine. There were some parts that felt a bit slow and repetitive during the heroine’s internal musings but nothing I wanted to skim. The secondary characters were perfect to either push the story forward, support the main characters, or add a bit of levity. I would absolutely love to see some of them get their own book. Overall, if you love mafia romances or intense alpha anti-heroes who flounder a bit due to what their experiencing, you’re definitely going to want to check this one out!
