Elin Hilderbrand

The Sweetheart Deal hits all of my favorite topics: loss, pain, friendship, betrayal—but ultimately love. It's the most romantic story I've read in years. --Elin Hilderbrand, author of the bestsellers Beautiful Day and The Matchmaker

Check out the full review at Kritters Ramblings Two men are friends from a young age, through high school and then into adulthood. One decides to be a firefighter while raising a family and sees the danger in his daily life due to the job he chose. One New Years eve he is really feel the anxiety and asks his best friend to swear that if he were to die, he would marry his wife and help raise the three boys they have. Trust me no spoilers, but he does in a skiing accident and Garrett is held to the promise he made on a drunken New Years eve. First, this may be minor, but I love how this book was written. Most of the characters involved in the story get an opportunity to tell the story from their perspective. The wife of the deceased, the friend and all three of their sons each take chapters to move the story along and tell their story. I LOVE multiple perspective books, I love seeing the same story from more than just one character's point of view.

The Sweetheart Deal is the story of what happens when you promise your best friend to marry your wife if anything should happen to you. On one drunken night, twelve years ago, Leo made his best friend Garrett, promise that if anything was to happen to Leo that Garrett would marry his wife, Audrey. A tragic skiing accident would take Leo from their lives but the note from Leo remains and Garrett wants to make do on his promise but Audrey has no clue what had happened that night twelve years ago. As Garrett makes the move to Portland from Boston to make sure Audrey and the three boys are alright and to make due on the promise, Audrey is left to discover what life is like without Leo around. With Garrett helping around the house and dealing with issues with the boys, Audrey finds herself falling for Garrett but at the same time, thinking that she is somehow cheating on Leo. It all comes to a boil when one of the boys finds the note and it leads to Audrey discovering what everything that has been happening the last few months in a ending that nobody will see coming! This book made me stay up later than what I liked to just to see how it all ends and it will leave you crying in some places at what is going on. The story-line seems to be popular lately with widowed women and men coming to rescue them but this one is a little different that it gives you what each family member is going through at the time instead of just focusing in on the woman. Polly Dugan is definitely gonna be on my to watch list for anything else that comes from her, yes she's that good of a writer!! Thank You to Polly Dugan for writing this fantastic story and for making me become a fan of yours!! I received this book from the BookSparks Summer Reading Challenge 2016 in exchange for a honest review.

I thought the book was pretty good until I got to the ending. It was so abrupt, it felt unfinished...
