The Unexpected Bride by Cynthia Woolf

Alice Carter found herself a widow, her doctor husband murdered as he left the hospital where he worked. Alice, too, is a doctor and thought she wouldn't have any trouble finding a position with the hospital where her husband had been so well regarded.

She was wrong. Seems no one wanted a female doctor, especially one in mourning. Seeing no other way out, Alice becomes a mail-order bride to a doctor in Hope's Crossing in the Montana Territory.

Dr. Jeremiah Kilarney, needs help. He needs a nurse to assist him with his patients. Knowing he has to marry the woman or she'll be inundated with marriage proposals from the lonely miners, he goes to Matchmaker & Co. Specifying his need for a nurse or someone willing to be trained as one, he's surprised when Alice Carter, doctor, steps out of the stagecoach with her precocious daughter Melly.

Can Alice and Jeremiah have a future when ghosts from her past still hold her heart?
Hope's Crossing can be the answer to their future or the end of their dreams.

About the Author

Cynthia Woolf is the award winning and best-selling author of twenty-two historical western romance books and two short stories with more books on the way.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia's father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner. The ranch they met on is still there as part of the open space in Mineral County in southwestern Colorado.

Writing as CA Woolf she has six scifi, space opera romance titles. She calls them westerns in space.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and her great critique partners for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Another great read. Enjoyed reading this book and the characters and their story

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review. The opinions are my own. This book is a good addition to the Mail Order Bride series set in Hope's Crossing, Montana. Two doctors with broken hearts come together to heal each other and to build their family with children and a lonely "grandfather". Just enough danger from the past to add suspense. A great afternoon read.

I really loved Alice Carter and Dr. Jeremiah Killarney. It would be hard enough to be a mail order bride, but to have a child also would be near impossible. I hope to read the first three books in the series because I enjoyed this one so much. I loved that Alice was a doctor also. It was nice that Jeremiah could see her as a doctor once he saw her work. I received a copy of this as an ebook from the author for a fair and honest opinion.

The author does an outstanding job at showing how hard it is for a women doing the same job as a man to get equal pay and respect not only from other doctors but from the people she is treating. It is never easy being a mail order bride going to the unknown meeting, marrying someone you do not know but to try to do a job having her husband not stand beside you supporting you is even harder. I really loved this story you can tell the author put a lot of thought and time into it. She does a wonderful job showing the struggles not only of one woman but the town and its people. Alice has little choice after her husband is murdered to become a mail order bride she has her little one to think of as well as getting away from a place with bad memories. It is really hard for her when she loved her husband so much letting another man in. I really could understand her and her reasoning along with her fight to be a doctor herself. I really liked this character. Just as I understood her side I also understood Jeremiah side in not knowing how much she knew and if she really knew her stuff. I think he was really pulled in two ways giving her what she wanted but looking out for the town’s people to give them the best care he could. He is a very understanding man that is until he wants all of him for his self finding her dead husband stands between them is hard for him to deal with. Both of these have a lot to learn and will have to trust along with give and take. I really liked how Alice took control giving the Doc more of a life setting hours and putting limits to things. I just loved how they slowly became a family bring others into their life. The characters here will steal your heart from the darling little girl to the adopted grandfather. Things are not easy for this couple they will have to go through a lot to build the life they want. Each finding out just what they are missing but neither willing to be the first to make the first step. The author gives you passion and chemistry as she throws in a little danger and mystery. As they finally start working out their issues there is danger around them will they get to find the true love before one of them dies? This was really well written bring back a time when women had to fight for every step they made. You can feel the struggles, pain and sorrow of trying to make a living taking a stand in what you believe. Finding common ground and letting go of your past to try again. I was pulled in from the first page which had my heart pounding. Ms. Woolf knows how to deliver a story that is not only entertaining but keeps you hanging on until the end giving you a compelling read you get lost in. I loved these characters and what the author bring to this story. It was a story I was very invested in and could not put it down.

SMALL TOWN DOCTOR SEEKING A NURSE AND WIFE The series of Hope’s Crossing include multiple stories, each reading as a standalone. It is full of murder, mystery, suspense, angst, heartache, new beginnings, holding onto the past, trying to move forward, and dealing with a crazed man intent on murder. The story is a page-turner, with a great cast of delightful characters, some from previous stories, and plenty of action and heart-stopping moments. Throw in two people, each needing each other, fighting love, falling in love, and finally owning and accepting that love. The story does have some steamy scenes between a married couple. Dr. Jeremiah Kilarney needs help with his medical practice and decides to place an ad seeking a nurse that will also be his wife. With the suggestion of friends, he uses the same Matchmaker & Co. agency that many of the other men in Hope’s Crossing used to obtain their mail-order bride. Widow, Alice Carter, needs to move on with her life after the murder of her husband, Dr. Adam Carter. She is running out of money, and no one will hire her, a widow and female doctor. She seeks the help of Matchmaker & Co., and they have the perfect man, a doctor who is in search of a wife and nurse for his medical practice. But, will he also allow Alice to practice medicine as a fellow physician? The plot has Dr. Alice Carter showing up, along with her three-year-old daughter, Melly, in Hope’s Crossing to become the bride of Dr. Jeremiah Kilarney. He is surprised to learn that she has a child, and that is ok, but now she informs him she is also a licensed doctor and wants to practice. “A fully qualified doctor, who is beautiful besides. How could I have expected that?” Disclosure: I volunteered to read an e-copy this story with an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings area my own.

Alice has to provide for her small daughter after her husband is killed however finds difficulty in procuring a MD posting as a woman. Deciding to change location she agrees to become the mail order bride for the Doc of Hope's Crossing. Jeremiah has a surprise of a daughter and another doctor for a wife. These two have to fight against an old danger that follows Alice to Montana as they come to know each other and form a family. Enjoy seeing another bride for Hope's Crossing and good family fitting into the community. Walt was fun surprise for a Grandpa. Looking forward to seeing who is next to find his love. Authors copy provided with thanks. Opinion is my own.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. I have many of Cynthia Woolf's historical western romance novels on my favorites shelf, and The Unexpected Bride will certainly take its place among them. This book is the 4th book in her Hope's Crossing series, but it can be read as a standalone and there are no cliffhangers. I found the book's premise of a busy western town doctor advertising for a mail order bride with nursing experience, and in turn getting a bride who herself is a doctor, refreshingly different and as the title says, unexpected. The fact that the bride also came with a three year old daughter that has a mind of her own and isn't afraid to speak it, added depth and humor to the evolving relationship between the doctor and his bride. There is also a grizzled, lonely, old miner that becomes a surrogate grandpa to 3yr old Melly, and a valued member of the family. But this newly formed family is being threatened by a vengeful widower who blames Alice and her late husband Adam for the death of his wife and has vowed to kill her. All these elements combine for a thoroughly interesting and emotionally engaging read.

Alice's husband was murdered and left her all alone with their 3 year old daughter. She has been trying to find work so she could take care of the two of them. When she couldn't find a job, she decided to become a mail order bride. Jeremiah is a doctor at Hope's Crossing. He is very busy and needs a wife and a nurse and so decides he will get on woman to fulfill both roles. He turns to the mail order bride agency. When Alice arrives with her daughter in tow, Jeremiah is very surprised to find out that she has a child and that she isn't a nurse, but a doctor. Alice also has the man who killed her husband hunting her so he can kill her. Jeremiah is having a hard time admitting that he loves Alice and Alice is having a hard time of letting go to her first husband. Will they be able admit their feelings for each other before it is too late?
