About the Author

Charles Michelson (1869–1948) was a journalist editor, and political publicist. Born in Virginia City, Nevada, he ran away from home when he was 13. He worked many jobs, such as sheepherder, miner, and teamster, before gaining his first journalist post with the Virginia City Chronicle. He later worked for San Francisco newspapers, before going to Cuba as a correspondent for Hearst's New York Journal in 1896.

After the war, Michelson worked for several other newspapers. In 1929 he was hired by the Democratic National Committee as the first full-time publicity director.

Michelson retired in 1942, returning briefly as associate director of publicity in 1944. He wrote his memoirs, The Ghost Talks (1944).
