Chapter One

Spending yet another day at the zoo was not quite what the white gorilla and his friends, the three chimpanzees, Dancer, Brainless, and Smarty, wanted. What should they do? That night, the white gorilla, who wanted to be called Chef, came up with a plan—he would escape with Dancer, Brainless, and Smarty to visit the world of humans. He could not stand the thought of humans visiting their environment all of the time, when they could not visit the humans' environment.

In the morning, Chef held a cane in his hands—a cane that had been passed down for generations and given to Chef by his grandfather. This was a magical cane that was meant to be used very wisely, for it was believed to be able to cast a spell on any human or animal that was a threat. Chef wondered, Could it?

That morning, the zookeeper made her rounds and glanced at the apes' cage. She noticed that Chef was holding a cane in his hand and staring out at her. Dancer was dancing in her cage as if her world was about to change for the better; Brainless was clueless; and Smarty, who thought Chef had the best idea as usual, had agreed to the plan. As the zookeeper stared back at Chef, Dancer gently unhooked the key from her pocket. About an hour later, their journey began.

As they quickly escaped, the four friends noticed a car coming toward them. Since they didn't know how far they could get on foot, they decided to stop the car. Chef held his cane out, pointing it toward the car, and the car began to slow down. The driver got out of the car as if he was under hypnosis. Dancer, Brainless, Smarty, and of course Chef, got into the car and drove away. Chef was driving. As they traveled, they all stared in amazement at the mountains, trees, cars, trucks, and stores around them. They were also fascinated with the people and children walking along the street.

After a few hours, they became hungry. They stopped at a local store to get some food. When they entered, customers began to scream and run out of the store. What do you think Chef did?
