About the Author

S.G. Redling parlayed her degree in English from Georgetown University into various careers including waitress, monument tour guide, sheepskin packer, and radio host. She has leapt from a plane and a moving train, gotten lost in Istanbul and locked in the dining car of a midnight train through the Carpathians. She currently lives in Huntington, West Virginia, and is also the author of the thriller Flowertown.

Some overly familiar genre tropes and a few logical problems mar this thriller from Redling (Flowertown). Danielle “Dani” Britton and Sinclair “Choo-Choo” Charbaneaux are analysts at Rasmund, a top-notch security company. When client Patrick Swan of Swan Technologies says he has no further need of Rasmund’s services, Dani must quickly retrieve case materials from her Washington, D.C., apartment, but when she returns to Rasmund, a deadly raid is in progress. She manages to evade the gunmen and escape to the roof, where Choo-Choo finds her. Together the two flee the grounds just before the building explodes. Unfortunately for Dani, someone knows that she has escaped. Dani and Choo-Choo aren’t able to put together much of a plan; nor can they discern why they were targeted. Strangely, they never think to contact other Rasmund offices. The villains, meanwhile, appear to have no idea that Choo-Choo also survived the raid, despite possessing otherwise excellent intel. Readers may prefer to wait for stronger offerings in this crowded field. (Jan.)

Though she works at the D.C. security firm Rasmund, analyst Dani Britton doesn't associate her job with danger. Instead, she thinks of it as providing time to spend with her best friend Fay and the ever-desirable Sinclair "Choo-Choo" Charbaneaux. The staff of Rasmund is made up of misfits: people who can see patterns in data or can vanish into thin air when the job calls for it but don't know how to sit down and get to know a person. Dani is shocked when she returns to the office after an errand to find that a team of assassins has destroyed it, making off with most of what she thought of as her life. Though she uses her cunning to escape the slaughter, the lead man on the hit is taking a head count, and Dani knows she's in his sights. Her only hope is to find what he was looking for, though some enigmatic communication from the assassin, who wants to be known only as "Tom," suggests that even he's not clear about the ultimate goal of the job. Determined to live to see another day, Dani spends what could be her last hours on Earth scrambling through D.C. to revisit the details of her latest job and see whether there's something she missed. Every layer Dani uncovers leads to a new truth about the work she's been doing and the people she thought she knew. Redling (Damocles, 2013, etc.) grabs and holds readers' attention throughout her violent thrill ride, though elements intended as humorous come across as overly self-conscious instead.
