Rob Welsh is a former US Marine and Minister with over 17 years experience in the financial industry. Rob has trained and mentored thousands of people on leadership, business, and personal growth with a key emphasis on empowering and adding value to others. Rob lives in Dallas, TX with his wife Miyuki of 35 years, and his son Kenny

Jonathan Ray Scott is from Dallas, Texas. A ten-year veteran of the National Football League as an offensive tackle, Jonathan was also a member of the 2005 National Champion Texas Longhorns football team. Jonathan’s life off the field has been as successful as his time on the field with experience in real estate, finance, education, coaching, executive leadership, and the music industry. He recently became the co-owner of a private equity group.

A financial adviser and an NFL veteran counsel new and aspiring professional athletes.

Two authors with a unique combination of skills and experience—Welsh, a former Marine and minister, is now a financial adviser, and Scott played professional football and now works in private equity—coach athletes in turning a career with a high but inconsistent paycheck into long-term financial success. They maintain a consistent overall voice as Welsh explains the mechanics of saving for retirement, establishing tax shelters, and generating sustainable returns on investment, and Scott provides specific examples from his own career of implementing techniques for reducing tax liability, developing a budget, and planning for long-term income generation. Covered here are the particular challenges that professional athletes face, such as getting paid only during the playing season, and broader financial topics, like understanding income tax. Also addressed are the bigger-picture questions, particularly the decisions athletes will have to make when their playing careers come to an end. The guide concludes with a series of short interviews with other retired professional athletes who reflect on their successes and challenges and offer advice to the new generation of players. Although Welsh and Scott are right to suggest that some of the book’s financial advice, like understanding net income, making strategic spending decisions, and developing an entrepreneurial mindset, can apply to all readers, many of the topics (choosing an agent, negotiating a contract, earning a six-figure salary as a rookie) apply primarily to professional athletes, making much of the book relevant to a limited potential audience. The financial advice is coherent and generally sound (although there is a tendency toward hyperbole, like the claims that banks charge 30% interest) and presented in a clear, conversational manner.

A well-written, practical personal finance book best suited for professional athletes.
