An amazingly beautiful book about the wisdom of nature and what happens when it becomes unbalanced.  when the wolves are reintroduced into Yellowstone park, a chain reaction takes place among all life there that benefits them.  it is an interesting story that is very educational.  I would like to add that the illustrations are beautiful.

Grade Level: K+Genre: Non-Fiction, InformationalThemes: The circle of lifeJean Craighead George tells what happened to the wilderness as the wolves were killed in the early 1900's. This story is written so younger students can understand it. It tells how other animals & plants were affected by the demise of the wolves.

Famed author Jean Craighead George, (My Side of the Mountain, Julie of the Wolves, and more) has written the story of the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park. The Wolves are Back flows like a storybook,"The wolf pup with his father ate until his stomach was round and then followed his father back to their den. They walked through gardens of wildflowers. The wolves had scared the mountain sheep that chew the flowers to the ground up into the rocky cliffs."The story follows the life of a pup and highlights the necessity of wolves to the complex ecosystem of Yellowstone Park. Wild wolves thin the coyote herds, provide meat for the bears, keep elk from destroying the grasslands, etc. Each of these actions benefits the wilderness, 'like pieces of a kaleidoscope...tumbling into place.""Beavers built ponds. Birds sang. Flowers bloomed. The wilderness is in balance again. The wolves are back."Paintings by landscape artist, Wendell Minor, showcase the graceful beauty of the the park and its inhabitants. Painted in both the brilliant and the soft colors of nature's flora and fauna, his illustrations impart serenity to the story, depicting the animals naturally, yet gently. Many are double spreads with minimal text.Jean Craighead George continues her commitment to our wild places with this beautiful picture book.

This is the most recent of Jean Craighead George's wolf books. But it's the first one I read of her collection. This picture book tells the story of wolves being reintroduced back into Yellowstone Park in Wyoming after years of being away. I learned a lot of true facts about wolves and the delicate balance of nature that needs to be maintained. Jean Craighead George makes nature stories easy to read. I would use this book with first graders, maybe with the Pre K students, too. This would be good, live information to counter the fairy tale and folk tale wolf stories that the students have already heard.

This is a great book for understanding food chains and carrying capacity of lands. My 4th grader class discussions based on this book were intelligent and showed great understanding how removing a top predator in an ecosystem impacts all parts of the ecosystem. Pictures are great, and not too graphic for sensitive kids. The ideas kids understood from this book were easily transferred over to where we live in CA.
