Cindy Williams Schrauben lives in Michigan where she writes books for kids that range from the truly serious to the seriously silly. Before embarking on this path, Cindy held positions as a teacher, administrator, and more. She loves sharing the message that ‘It’s never too late to dream!’ When not writing, working with other authors, or honing her craft, Cindy might be found dissecting her grandsons’ shenanigans for story ideas, reading on the floor in the bookstore, or eating ice cream…ideally all at once. Julia Seal knew from the age of five what she wanted to do for a living—draw pictures! After graduating with a degree in Graphic Design and then working in the greeting card industry (and getting covered in glitter every day!) she finally moved onto her dream job, illustrating children’s books. Careers and the qualities they represent are explored in this debut picture book’s take on the traditional question “What will you be when you grow up?”

On each page of this work, children are encouraged to envision their futures as filled with endless possibilities. In each of the rhythmic stanzas, the narrator repeats the final word in the first three lines (for example, dreams on the opening page) and asks who might embody the actions or qualities mentioned. Then the narrator follows with a command (“Believe,” “Blast off,” “Create”) and the phrase “It could be you!” The second line in most stanzas offers a job title: astronaut, artist, athlete, trucker, and more. But while the various careers will interest young readers, the key features of those occupations—their qualities of resilience and creativity—should capture their imaginations (“Who has keen-designflair, / an artist’s time-to-shineflair, / a sketch-and-then-refineflair? / Create. It could be you!”). Schrauben’s firm beat and repeated phrases allow young lap readers to chime in with adults reading aloud. Veteran illustrator Seal’s soft-edged, cartoonish paintings show a diverse group of children and adults interacting in natural and urban environments. Inclusivity is emphasized throughout, especially on the athlete page, which depicts a wheelchair race. By looking at the careers’ positive traits and phrasing the rhymes to support a “growth mindset” and flexible thinking, the author breathes fresh life into a familiar theme.
