A Welsh Methodist minister's daughter changes her life when she appeals for help to Nicholas Davies, a half-Gypsy earl...

They called him the Demon Earl. They said he could do anything. Son of a rogue and a Gypsy, Nicholas Davies was a notorious rake until a shattering betrayal left him alone and embittered in the Welsh countryside.

Desperation drives quiet schoolteacher Clare Morgan to ask the Demon Earl to help save her village. Unwilling to involve himself in the problems of others, Nicholas sets an impossible price on his aid—only if Clare agrees to live with him for three months, letting the world think the worst, will he intervene.

Furiously Clare accepts his outrageous challenge, and the two are swept into an intoxicating Regency world of danger and desire. As allies, Clare and Nicholas fight to save her community. As adversaries, they explore the hazardous terrain of power and sensuality. And as lovers, they surrender to a passion that threatens the very foundations of their lives.

While I have found many first books in a series to have a typical brash, abrasive hero who is "tamed" by a sweet, beguiling heroine, this story is still able to capture your attention and keep you engaged throughout the development of the characters and plot. I find Putney's writing fresh and thorough in a way some other authors don't provide. There is a completeness to the books that I find immensely satisfying. I have read numerous titles by this author, as well as the rest of the books in this series, and this is definitely worth your time!

Mary Jo Putney wrote a book... a real story that took time to develop characters. Nicholas was the son of an English Lord and his gypsy wife. When he was 7 years old, his mother sold him to his grandfather for 100 gold pieces. His life was a series of tortures designed by his grandfather. Claire was the daughter of a religious leader. She had dedicated herself to the people in her community. The Earl had finally returned after four years and she had to convince him to help. Claire had faith but she felt cheated because despite her efforts, she did not feel as though God spoke to her. This is not a cliffhanger... 374 pages... and I would recommend it to mature adult readers.

This book had me from the beginning! It felt like a seduction itself! The story was a wonderfully slow burning thing that just kept getting better and better as it went on. Clare is a preacher's daughter. Taught how to be everything for everyone. The one thing she wanted, she did not often have, her father's attention. Nicholas is the "Demon Earl" who owns most of the property in the area. Clare goes to talk to him about he conditions in the coal mine on his property. What follows is an enticingly eccentric tale of the Earl and how he likes to play with people. Until one day he realizes he is having much more fun that he thought he would. He proposes a bargain in exchange for taking the town's problems in hand. Clare is just desperate enough to take him up on his offer. She feels he made it just so she would refuse! The story is rife with sexual tension, witty banter, and intrigue! I highly recommend this book! I'd love to say more, but I don't like spoilers so I will let you decide! *Courtesy Copy*

This book was so so. I should have know that when the POV was given at the beginning of the book it was going to be slow. I skipped parts to get to the depth of the book and found it to be interesting. I knew the mine's manager was crooked from the start. Ms Putney restored the friendship and I was glad of that.

Clare Morgan is willing to risk her reputation in order to save the village where she lives. For the help of Lord Nicholas Aberdare, she agrees to live with him for three months. Nicholas is a wicked charmer with his gypsy heritage. Is Clare in danger of losing both her virtue and her heart? Clare is a strong, independent woman who wants to help the men who work in the pit. The Demon Earl is a devil with the ladies. He has wealth and power but he's not happy with his fate. He feels alone and an outcast. He has endured so much pain and abandonment in his life. He has hardened his heart. Now that Clare is in his life, his resolve has weakened. As these two struggle with their attraction, they work hard to improve conditions in Penreith and find who wants the Demon Earl dead. I enjoyed the interaction between Clare and Nicholas. I could feel the passion and desire. The scenes where Clare played pool with the Earl were amazing. I loved it. Their dialogue was flirtatious and their desire was palpable. Wales provided an intriguing backdrop for this enthralling story. The supporting cast is great. Mary Jo Putney has written wonderful characters with a storyline that captured my attention. The plot moved swiftly and was filled with unexpected twists and turns. I was hooked from the first page. This is a wonderful start to the Fallen Angels series. This book goes on my keeper shelf.

Great set-up for the Fallen Angels series. This is Nicholas' story as he returns to Penreith in Wales determined not to get involved with village life but Clare does not allow that to happen. She challenges him to make the mine there better though he owns the land but not the mine. Clare challenges him throughout the story on many levels. I loved Clare and Nicholas. They were a strong match. Each gave as good as he/she got. Neither got away with much. I loved watching them trying to outmaneuver one another in their game of wits. The build-up of the sexual tension was fantastic. It made the book. The story line and the secondary lines were well done and believable. The duel scene, the two big mine scenes, the escape scene, and the last scene had me on the edge of my seat. I felt like I was there living through these scenes. I figured out why Michael (one of the Fallen Angels) hated and was trying to kill Nicholas before the end of the book but I wondered how long it would take to get the reason out of Michael. Thunder and Roses is so well done, I look forward to the rest of the series.
