Alexa is in her first season and has decided to go for an advantageous match instead of a love one. She knows she will only love one man, her brother Gavin’s best friend, Lord Maxon Collins. She has loved him since childhood, but since he hasn’t noticed her before, she gives up the dream of ever becoming his wife. Maxon is eight years older than Alexa, so I believe he might not have seen her as an eligible match before her come out and the fact that she is his best friend’s sister. I was a little confused as to why Alexa wouldn’t have a kernel of hope for a match with Maxon in the beginning, but I haven’t read the other two books in the series, so that might be why. Alexa is being courted by, in my opinion, a prig. He is pompous, self-centered, and over critical of every aspect of Alexa’s life. His name is even priggish, Lord Edwin Rudgers. Even though Alexa isn’t overly fond of Lord Edwin, she believes he’s a good match. When he proposes, she is still a little hesitant and tells him she will think on it. Then Maxon gets thrown into the mix when he is sent to watch over Alexa in her brother’s stead. He, of course, hates Edwin on sight and realizes what an amazing and beautiful woman Alexa has become. After a horrific title hunter debacle earlier in the season, Maxon is hesitant to pursue Alexa, but he does everything he can to discourage her from accepting Lord Edwin. In turn, Maxon’s reservations make Alexa even more convinced she must make it work with Edwin. I really wanted to slap her at several point in the novel for her utter stubbornness, but I understood her behavior to a point. She believed she didn’t have any other choices after a rumor spread earlier in the season. So here we have a stubborn debutant and a once burned Earl. They both have their reasons for playing the parts they do throughout the novel, but love cannot be denied! While this was the first book I’ve read in the three book series, I felt there was enough background info explained that I didn’t feel too lost. I liked Boom’s writing style and will be going back to read the first two books in the series. I received this book for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A sweet romance between childhood friends. Lord Maxon Collins and Miss Alexandra “Alexa” Farris have known each other since childhood. Maxon had always seen Alexa as the little sister of his best friend. While Maxon fights his new feelings, Alexa is trying very hard to move on and really settle for the man that has asked for her hand. The book has no real tension or drama going on except that Alexa finds she is not willing or able to settle for anything less than what her heart wants. The conversations are nice and the set downs Alexa gives Maxon had me smiling, but there was not real antagonist or threat of the HEA not happening. There was no real drama, tension of real angst for the characters to overcome. I like the trope- childhood friends to lovers, but this one fell short in there was no real chance for either side to grow or overcome anything to move them forward. Maxon just needed to get out of his own way. The other major characters, Miss Cannis and Lord Edwin are necessary to the plot, but I found myself NOT liking them and even questioning Miss Cannis’s loyalties in the end. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Miss Alexa Farris is being squired by Lord Edwin, the second son of a Marquess. The man is quite pompous and critical of Alexa’s hair and freckles as he wants her to be perfect. It is very important that she be without flaws so she will pass her father’s critique. When Edwin asks her to marry him, she refuses to answer him yet. There is another man who holds Alexa’s heart. When she confides the proposal to her friend, Victoria Cannes, the young woman does not approve of him. Alexa confesses that the only man who has ever interested her is Lord Maxon Collins who is an earl and a life-long friend of her brother, Gavin. Alexa had not seen Maxon for years until the night of a dance party. Delighted but nervous at seeing him again, she finds him rather aloof and she tells him what she thinks of him. She has turned into a lovely young woman. Gavin has asked Maxon to look after his sister during the season as his own wife is increasing and he wants to stay near her. When Edwin invites Alexa to a house party to meet his father, she agrees to attend only if Miss Cannes is also invited. Lord Collins invites himself as well as he is Alexa’s chaperone. At the party, things happen that show her the way to the only man she can truly love. This is a nice little story but I admit that I found Alexa to be a twit and her immaturity makes her appear to need more time at home before making her debut.
