About the Author

Anne Stuart is a grandmaster of the genre, winner of Romance Writers of America's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, survivor of more than thirty-five years in the romance business, and still just keeps getting better.

Her first novel was Barrett's Hill, a gothic romance published by Ballantine in 1974 when Anne had just turned 25. Since then she's written more gothics, regencies, romantic suspense, romantic adventure, series romance, suspense, historical romance, paranormal and mainstream contemporary romance for publishers such as Doubleday, Harlequin, Silhouette, Avon, Zebra, St. Martins Press, Berkley, Dell, Pocket Books and Fawcett.

She’s won numerous awards, appeared on most bestseller lists, and speaks all over the country. Her general outrageousness has gotten her on Entertainment Tonight, as well as in Vogue, People, USA Today, Women’s Day and countless other national newspapers and magazines.

When she’s not traveling, she’s at home in Northern Vermont with her luscious husband of thirty-six years, an empty nest, three cats, four sewing machines, and one Springer Spaniel, and when she’s not working she’s watching movies, listening to rock and roll (preferably Japanese) and spending far too much time quilting.

The hero is dark and twisty but that is what you expect of Stuart. I love the heroine who makes a wonderfully innocent murderess. Word of warning, stop at the ending, don't read the final epilogue. I get that the ending has to include a reformed rake I would have just preferred a bit more delicious decadence and less domesticity!

This was the first romance I ever read and it hooked me to romance in a way no other book could have. Though I have read many other great books, this one is still my all-time favorite. To this day I have never read another book that captures me like this one. To have the heroine absolutely innocent yet also a murderer was quite fascinating. It was nice to know that she had the strength of character to defend her virtue, even up to the point of murder. In my opinion, she was the perfect combination of innocence and strength of character. In addition, James Killoran was the perfect dark lord. He was brooding and a little set off from others, yet he gave off a definite sexual vibe which made me yearn for him myself. The writing of this book was wonderful, being humorous and touching, as well as quite well written (unlike some which seem like middle schoolers could've written the story). This is a definite read for any type of romance reader.
