Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Human beings have always exhibited curiosity about the moon. People in ancient cultures studied the phases of the moon for planting and harvesting. Some considered the moon to be a deity. Galileo first observed the moon through a telescope in 1610 and studies continued using more and more powerful scopes for over three hundred years. In 1961, President John Kennedy announced his goal of landing men on the moon during that decade. In July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the surface of the moon pronouncing "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This factual account is clearly written and accompanied with both black and white and color photographs. Profiles of four of the astronauts, reproductions of some of their significant journal entries, and inset boxes of supplemental information aid in understanding. Includes a table of contents, a timeline, end notes, a bibliography, and an index. A good reference source for middle school students. Part of the "Great Expeditions" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
