TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS VOLUME ONE STANDARD COLOR EDITION: COLLECTING ISSUES #28-31 RETRO COMIC REPRINTS #801
TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS' name is as much of a hybrid as the comic itself was. Debuting in July of
1942, the series began with issue #28, taking over the numbering from TOP-NOTCH COMICS. TOPNOTCH LAUGH COMICS would last eighteen issues and would then be renamed (again) to LAUGH
COMIX with issue #46 and would last a total of three issues before having another name change to
SUZIE COMICS.
Superheroes were popular in 1942 and TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS tried, at first, to be the best of
both worlds. The series began with two hero features, the Black Hood and Kardak the magician.
Kardak would only last through the first two issues while the Black Hood survived through issue
#44.
TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS was heavily invested in the laugh part of the series' title. First there was
POKEY OAKEY, a hillbilly humor title which was a serialized feature with an ongoing story. Next was
SENOR SIESTA, another serialized feature about a sleepy Mexican town. SNOOP MCGOOK was a
comedy/detective series. PERCY was yet another MLJ teenage humor series and there was also SUZIE,
a comedy title with plenty of good girl art and scenarios. TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS was crafted by
various members of MLJ's excellent stable of artists including Bob Montana, Sam Cooper, Carl
Hubbell, Al Camy, Paul Reinman and Red Holmdale.
This book was compiled with the best images currently available. That stated, these comics are over
eighty years old. The best efforts have been made to make the pages as enjoyable as possible but not
every panel is perfect and some allowances for the age of the books need to be considered when
judging the overall contents. The stories here were created in a less enlightened time and there are
some images that may offend modern readers.
