Touch of Rain by Teyla Branton

Sometimes what you can't see means everything

When a young woman vanishes without a trace, her heartbroken parents turn to the last prospect they can find for hope: Autumn Rain. Autumn reads imprints--emotions left behind on certain objects. Only she can shed light on their daughter's last thoughts.

But Autumn's gift makes her life difficult. Everyday activities like opening a door or holding a friend's keys can send her into turmoil. It doesn't help that the infuriating Detective Shannon Martin, who Autumn has helped on cases, usually treats her more like a suspect than a consultant. Too often Autumn finds herself retreating to her antiques shop and the company of her best friend, Jake Ryan, to avoid notice.

Private detective Ethan McConnell, whose widowed sister has gone missing under similar circumstances, also comes to Autumn for help, but her involvement sets in motion a series of events that risk not only her own life, but the lives of those she cares about most.

About the Author

Teyla Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. On that same farm she once owned thirty-three gerbils and eighteen cats, not a good mix, as it turns out. Teyla always had her nose in a book and daydreamed about someday creating her own worlds. She is now married, mostly grown up, and has seven kids, so life at her house can be very interesting (and loud), but writing keeps her sane. She thrives on the energy and daily amusement offered by her children, the semi-ordered chaos giving her a constant source of writing material. Grabbing any snatch of free time from her hectic life, Teyla writes novels full of mystery, romance, and imagination. She warns her children that if they don’t behave, they just might find themselves in her next book! She’s been known to wear pajamas all day when working on a deadline, and is often distracted enough to burn dinner. (Okay, pretty much 90% of the time.) A sign on her office door reads: DANGER. WRITER AT WORK. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK. She loves writing fiction and traveling, and she hopes to write and travel a lot more. She also loves shooting guns, martial arts, and belly dancing. She has worked in the publishing business for over twenty years.

I usually don't read this type of book. Autumn Rain has a very unique gift. Touching objects and knowing people's thoughts when they held them. Book interesting and we'll written. Moved a little slow but kept my interest. Looking forward for Autumn's next adventure. joy943

This was an awesome book. It caught my attention in a newsletter and I decided to buy it as I liked the premise. It's a great paranormal suspense book. The suspense part is really well done and there are some great twists at the end. The main character Autumn is a bit quirky, very likeable and kind. I liked reading about her and how she handled this whole situation. I also liked reading about how she interacted with the other side characters. There are three potential love interests for Autumn in this book and I liked seeing how she has a connection with all of them. The paranormal aspect was very well done. I really liked the concept of Autumn seeing imprints and I thought the author handled it very well. It was an important part of the story and very well thought out. The start of the book was a tiny bit slow, but once the suspense plot line started making progress the story completely had my attention. I bought book 2 before I even finished this one and hope to continue this series soon.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the quirkiness of the main character, as well as her special gifts. The story line kept me interested and had some surprising turns I would not have predicted. The book had a little romance mixed with a bit of the paranormal, as well as mystery and thrills, all of which kept me reading to the end and wanting more. I look forward to reading more of Teyla's work, and more in this particular timeline with this particular main character. I don't know if Teyla intends to mix this timeline with some of her other works, but she could definitely make that work.

A detective with a hint of the paranormal, filled with suspense, love and betrayal. Touch of Rain by Teyla Branton is a compelling story you can’t stop reading until you’ve devoured it whole. Already at the start of the story Autumn experiences something unpleasant when she reads an imprint. The chilling cold description of what she sees and feels - emotions and history of someone else - are in a stark contrast with the situation she is currently in. Her antique shop emits a warm and pleasant feeling to the reader, mainly because of the wonderful way with which Teyla describes the details of the surroundings and the history of Autumn and those around her. The group standing at the riverside, selling all sorts of self-made or self-grown wares, wearing t-shirts and no make-up, smiling to those who pass by; you can see it in your mind’s eye. Teyla has a very pleasant writing style. She gives details and emotions and meticulously slips in tiny bits of history about the characters, so smoothly you want to congratulate her on giving so much background details wrapped up in descriptions in such a way that the reader hardly notices how they are presented to us. Like presents that we can unwrap. By the end of the story we know a lot, about each character, and we love many of them to bits - and despise some as well. Despite the hints of paranormal aspects - things that might put some people off- the characters remain credible as realistic human beings. Despite Autumn and Tawnia having uncommon skills, they still have their faults and weaknesses. In fact, Autumn’s faults might be the reason she stumbles into this adventure in the first place. This case will fascinate you and enrapture you till the end. I had a hard time putting this book down in order to cook and do other daily chores - it just was that compelling. Once you get into the tale, and you dive in very smoothly, you will want to know the characters’ motives. Why have they done what they did? Why did those girls leave with the group? What is Harmony Farms? Will Ethan keep his word? Is Detective Shannon an enemy or a friend? Can Spring and Silverstar escape the abuse? And will they come out alive? What’s up with Inclar? Why does Gabe give me the creeps? Is Harmony the real evil genius behind this all? Can Korin help Autumn in the end? So many questions that are on the verge to be answered and before you know it you’re two-hundred pages into the story. If the descriptions above tingle and tickle your interest, then this book will definitely be the thing for you. Different from a standard detective but all the sweeter because of it, I highly recommend this book, the first of a series, to any fan of detectives, but also to fans of paranormal characters, as well as readers of the darker fantasy tales. I’m looking forward to a new adventure by Teyla’s hand. - By Vanne Booktastic NL

I loved the depth of and the detailed descriptions of the characters, the twisting plot, and the speed of the entire book. I was fooled to the end! I couldn't put it down once I started, even my horse chores were delayed once I realized how close I was to the end. Amazing read I have already recommended to my friends.

Autumn's gift, reading emotions on objects, can often be a taxing burden - physically, mentally and emotionally. Jake, her best friend is able to lessen the burden, while sparking another type of interest! And then there Det. Detective Shannon Martin... Thrilling, gratifying paranormal romance! Admired how Autumn and Tawnia are both spirited, strong women. Crazy about Jake's strength and his feelings for Autumn. 3 1/2 stars, would have been 4 except: Jake's hairstyle is called locks. Calling them dreadlocks is not a good thing. Voluntarily read ARC for honest review.
