I loved the fast-paced writing in this story of an FBI agent who has just returned from a year in a safe house. Lara Grant went undercover to capture a child selling ring’s boss. It took a year of time and then another year in a safe house to make this happen but Lara was happy it was over. Now she just wanted to get on with her life. She has been assigned to the Crisis Management Unit but before she can even report for her first day, she is called to the scene of a jumper who has asked for her by name. She manages to get him down from the ledge only to have a sniper put a bullet between his eyes. Hopefully, none of the camera crews has captured her face but Lara can’t be sure. She and her new partner, Nick, go to the scene of a stabbing in Central Park. The victim has the same name as Lara and this makes her wonder if the crime boss is reaching out to kill her from prison. With several more back stories of other members of the team, this is a novel done in eight short story formats. Just when you are really getting into the book, it ends and you need to get the next in the series. I would rather have the whole book to read than several short books. I will just have to wonder how the story really ends.

“We have to assume that, with Lara’s photo out there, it’s possible that somebody in the Moretti ring might see it and know that it was Lara who infiltrated them two years ago and brought them down. Now that it’s clear Lara is back in New York, it’s also possible that somebody is looking for revenge.” Victoria looked at Lara. “Maybe it’s time for you to disappear again for a little while, until we see how this all plays out.” When hiding from an organization that can have anyone anywhere: a stranger on the street, someone in your own office, in your neighborhood, in your family…can you imagine how that messes up the complexity of someone’s brain, someone’s mental capacity to survive? Cassidy provides an introduction of Lara and her past as an undercover operative who made her way to the top of a huge crime ring, run under a man named Moretti. That name haunts Lara’s dreams and her every waking moment, even though Moretti is behind bars. Her appearance in the news—along with two murders identified to have the Moretti crime ring insignia—has Lara on edge. Only after receiving a package that holds secrets to her past undercover operation, Lara knows that her nightmares have become reality again and now her world is on the brink of shattering completely. She feels alone, helpless and vulnerable. Can her new partner and new team help her figure out who is behind the murders before it is too late? This mystery is riveting, suspenseful and enticing. It will have readers hanging by the end of their seats, waiting for the next shoe to drop. This is an easy-to-read short story and the first of eight installments in the Tough Justice Series. If you are a reader of crime and mystery, this may interest you. A free copy through NetGalley was exchanged for an honest review of this fictional piece.

This is Part 1 in an 8 part series of books following the character of FBI Agent Lara Grant and although it is fairly short and a quick read, it certainly packs a lot of information and action. This first part (and the last one) is written by Carla Cassidy with subsequent parts being written by other authors. This is a novel way of writing a series of books and it remains to be seen how this works out but this first certainly sets the scene with excellent writing and a fast pace. Lara has recently returned to active duty in the Crisis Management Team following an undercover operation putting a major crime boss behind bars which resulted in a year being spent in a safe house. Unfortunately, whilst trying to prevent a man from committing suicide, the media splash her face all over the news and her cover is blown and all clues to this death and others point to the crime syndicate she helped to put an end to and which open wounds Lara took a long time to bury. As I said, this is really well written and is an excellent opener to a series. The characters are interesting and believable, the story intriguing and fast paced but don’t expect any answers to the many questions raised in this short book … be prepared to want - no need - to read the next installment as this one ends on a cliff-hanger. I was kindly provided with a copy of this book by the publisher, Harlequin (UK) Ltd, via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review but you can currently download a free copy from Amazon UK, Barnes & Noble, WHSmith and likely other websites so what are you waiting for! You’ve nothing to lose.

Laura Grant is an FBI agent in the Crisis Management unit. She was requested by a person on a ledge and it had to be her and only her. I really liked this story, at least what there was of it. I didn't realize it was just one part or I wouldn't have read it. I didn't like where it dropped off. I was really disappointed. I would tell any that is going to read it to make sure they have the entire 8 parts. **I receive an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

I have read several of Carla Cassidy's books, mainly her MYSTERY/SUSPENSE and ROMANTIC SUSPENSE. In this series of 8 parts, featuring FBI Agent Lara Grant, Carla shares the writing experience with Carol Erickson, Gail Barrett, and Tyler Anne Snell. Each of them have written 2 books in this series. This book introduces Lara Grant and focuses on her past. She spent a year under cover and brought down a major mafia drug trafficker. She then went into Witness Protection until all members of the gang were tried, convicted, and locked away for good. Or were they ..... ? Lara has barely met her new partner and the rest of the team when she's called out. A man is on a ledge, ready to jump, but asks for Lara by name. After several hours of trying to talk him down, he confesses to the killing of a young girl, and lets himself be talked off the ledge. Found in his possession is a stamp and ink pad. The stamp is a replica of a tattoo that the mafia used to mark their 'possessions'. It will remain a question as a sniper ends his life. And then a young woman with the same name as Lara is murdered. Now the chase is on to see where this threat is coming from ..... This was a short story, and a quick, easy read. The book focuses on Lara, her secrets, her trust issues. She is well fleshed out and I think she will make a very good series character. Her new partner, Nick Delano, has a past and secrets of his own. I look forward to learning much more about him. I gave it 5 stars ... I like the story and I look forward to see where it goes from here. My thanks to the author / Harlequin (US & Canada) -Harlequin Special Releases /NetGalley who furnished a digital copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This is the first installment in a proposed 8 part serial. Lara is an FBI special agent who starts her day stepping out on a ledge high above a New York City street to talk in a jumper who requested her by name even though she had no idea who he is. She talks him in and on the way out to the police car he is shot and her picture is taken and posted to the internet. She is exposed. Lara had been undercover and helped take down the Moretti syndicate but now it appears they are back and she is targeted. First the jumper who was actually a child kidnapper and killer and then a random jogger in Central Park. We are introduced to the characters and special agents and the mystery. Interesting start to this serial. **Received this book from they publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
